In The Headmistress's Office

CHAPTER 10: In The Headmistress’s Office

Severus and Hermione sat waiting in two extremely uncomfortable chairs while Headmistress McGonagall paced back and forth. Albus Dumbledore couldn’t stop smiling down at them from his portrait. He even had the nerve to wink at Severus at one point. Minerva finally stopped and drew a deep breath before she turned to face them.

“Would you like to explain why you came running into breakfast, late, wearing each others robes? And maybe explain those?” Minerva asked, pointing at the little red marks peaking over Hermione’s collar. Severus looked over at the tiny spots he had left the night before and smirked, he couldn’t recall ever leaving marks like that on a woman before. “From that smug look on your face Severus I suppose you are responsible.”

Minerva fall back into her desk chair and stared at the two of them, unsure what to say, or even what to think about the situation.

“How long has this been going on?” She asked.

“Not long.” Hermione answered. Reaching behind her to pull the pins from her bun and let her hair fall to cover the tiny love bites on her neck.

“I’m sorry, I don’t understand. Was this an act of impulse? A one time thing? Or is there something going on here that I have missed?” Minerva saw them look at each other and caught her breath. It was something she had never thought to see in her lifetime, especially not from Severus.

“It was impulsive, but not a one time thing.” He said softly. “There is something going on that you missed, Minerva.” Severus smiled, actually smiled at Hermione. Minerva had never seen him smile, even as a boy.

“We didn’t mean to create a scene, or gossip. We just couldn’t tell which robe was which when we grabbed them from the floor.” Hermione said, biting her lip.

“Stop that.” Severus said, as always, reaching out to brush her lip.

“So you have a relationship?” Minerva asked. “A romantic relationship that you fully intend to continue?”

Severus’s head snapped up, his eyes flashing slightly and the familiar scowl on his face.

“Yes, this relationship will continue. Is that going to be a problem?” He asked.

“If it will be an issue Minerva, I will look for another post at the end of the year.” Hermione said. Severus’s face softened and he turned to look at her. She was willing to switch jobs for him?

“That will not be necessary, Hermione. This is not the first time professors at this school have become romantically involved. First time for a Slytherin and Gryffindor however.” She said, laughing lightly. “And it is the first time they have made such an interesting entrance into the dining hall.”

“We will attempt to be more circumspect in the future, Headmistress.” Severus said.

“I’ll open the flue connection between your rooms. It would be better for the students not to see you coming and going at all hours.” She smiled. “And should I see any funny business in the halls I will not hesitate to take house points from either one of you. That would also be a first here at Hogwarts.”

“We’ll try to control ourselves in public.” Hermione said, struggling to hold back her laughter.

“I don’t understand how this happened, I never even saw that two of you so much as say hello. How is it you spend your nights…well, doing whatever…right under my nose?” She asked.

“We can’t really answer that either, Minerva, it was a little sudden.” Severus wasn’t exactly comfortable discussing his personal life.

“Well, good luck to you both. I should let you go, since you both have classes to teach.” Minerva waved towards the door and pretended to focus on the parchments on her desk. Severus took Hermione’s hand and led her from the office, closing the door behind her. Minerva slumped back in her chair and spun around to face Albus’s portrait.

“Did you know this would happen?” She asked. Albus smiled, his blue eyes twinkling.

“Long ago.” He replied.

“You could have warned me Albus.”

“But it was far more fun for everyone to find out the way they did.” He laughed.

“So what happens next?” She asked.

“Just wait Minerva, it will be unlike anything Hogwarts has ever seen.” Albus smiled brightly.
