Chapter 9 – Worries
Remus steadied both Elli and Severus when they appeared at the gates of the school. With a firm hold on Elli, Remus sprinted into the school, shouting for Dumbledore. Severus followed more slowly, carrying Harry.
The main doors opened and a worried Dumbledore came through them, followed by Minerva and Madam Pomfrey. Poppy went over to Severus and quickly waved her wand over Harry.
The results of her test made her eyes open slightly wider. Her lip trembled, but with a firm voice she commanded, “Severus, quickly bring Harry up to the hospital wing. He is severely injured, but we should be able to heal him.”
The small party quickly went to the hospital wing; Severus laid Harry on one of the beds. Poppy started to chant spells over him whilst waving her wand. Severus looked through the potions and collected a few, then started to lift Harry’s head and gently pour some down his throat. Remus could see that Severus was having trouble with Harry not swallowing, so he went over to the bed and helped his lover by carefully massaging Harry’s throat so he could swallow the potions.
Elli stood at the end of the bed, watching her fathers trying to save her brother. She could see his aura pulsing around him and it was a very sickly yellow, not his normal black-blue. She watched as slowly it started to darken and she breathed a sigh of relief. “His aura is getting better, Papa.”
Remus lifted his head and looked over to his daughter. “Yes, it is,” he agreed continuing to massage Harry’s throat.
They worked on Harry for a couple of hours until Poppy decided that he was stabilised. “That is all we can do for Harry at the moment, and we must allow him to rest and heal. I will monitor him until he awakens.” She started to shoo people out until she saw the three determined faces. “OK, you can stay, but do not disturb him.” She looked at Severus, Remus, and Elli, noticing for the first time their exhausted faces. “You must all rest as well.”
Elli gratefully sank into the chair by Harry’s bed, whilst Remus and Severus lay down together on one of the beds that Severus had Transfigured to be larger.
Elli’s head felt like it was going to explode and she could really have done with a pain potion, but she didn’t want to disturb the two men who were lying together, just holding each other. She sat there holding Harry’s hand and praying to all the god’s that he would wake up soon, as she didn’t know how Draco would survive if he didn’t.
“Oh Merlin! Draco!” Elli whispered.
Remus’s head jerked up as he heard Elli’s muttered oath. They had forgotten Draco. Remus looked at Severus, who had been dozing.
“Sev, you need to go get Draco before he hears about this in the Daily Prophet.”
Severus looked up at his lover in surprise and Remus laughed quietly. “Did you think you were the only one to know? It was hard not to smell them together.” He smiled down at the figure in the bed, and then back up to Severus. “We really need to get Draco here, just in case anything happens.”
Severus looked back at Remus with a worried look on his face. Getting up from his seat, he started to stride to the door. “I shouldn’t be gone long; I will bring him back soon.”
Severus Apparated onto the grounds outside of Malfoy Manor and quickly made his way to the door. After knocking on the door, he was greeted by a house-elf. Without a word, Severus brushed past it and went directly into Lucius’s study, where he found his godson and oldest friend.
Draco looked up at his godfather when he strode into the room. “Merlin, Sev. You look awful.”
“Draco, you must get your things. We are going to Hogwarts. There was an attack on Diagon Alley this morning,”
Draco stood up and staggered over to Severus. “Harry. Is he OK?” he whispered.
Severus looked at his godson with sympathy in his eyes. “He was hit with an unknown curse. He is unconscious. I took him, Remus, and Elli to Hogwarts.”
“I’ll get my cloak.” Draco staggered to the door with unshed tears in his eyes.
Lucius, up until that moment, had been deathly quiet. Now he turned to his friend. “Are you OK, Sev? You look tired.”
“I’m fine; it’s just been a bit rough.”
Lucius placed his hand on Severus’ shoulder. “How is Potter?”
Severus looked into the face of his oldest and closest friend and took a deep breath before answering. “It’s bad, Luc; he got hit by a curse thrown by Bellatrix. He is in a coma and we don’t know if he will ever wake up.”
Lucius tightened his hold on Severus’ shoulder to give his friend strength. He was still a Death Eater and loyal to the Dark Lord. He had known that Severus was a spy for Dumbledore and also that his son had always had a strange fascination with Harry Potter, but he would never betray either of them.
One was his son and the other, he owed his life to. He would protect both of them with his life if need be and would always be there for them both.
“Whatever you need, Sev - you only have to ask.”
Draco came through the door with his cloak wrapped tightly around his body. His father looked at his face, and he could see the dried tear tracks that ran down his cheeks.
With an uncharacteristic show of emotion, he hugged his son and placed a light kiss on his forehead. “Take care of your godfather, Draco. I will come to Hogwarts soon to see how you are doing.”
Draco hugged his father back and spoke through a tear-clogged throat. “I will, Father, and I will see you soon.” With that, he walked out of the door with a tired-looking Severus following him. When they reached the Apparition point, they both Apparated to Hogwarts.
At Hogwarts, Severus grabbed Draco’s hand and they both started running to the hospital wing. They reached the hospital wing in record time and it was an out of breath Potions master that pushed open the hospital door. Draco ran into the wing, looking around frantically for his lover.
Remus heard a noise from the other room and with a whispered, “I’ll be right back,” to Elli, he left the room to investigate. As he entered the main ward he saw that Severus had returned and Draco was with him, looking very worried. Draco looked over at Remus when he heard him enter. Remus opened his arms and Draco ran straight into them. Remus held him whilst Draco stood sobbing into Remus’ shoulder. Carefully, when the sobs had subsided, Remus held Draco at arm’s length.
“Let’s go and see him, Draco. He needs to know you are there for him.” Draco silently nodded and allowed Remus to lead him gently into the private room that was usually used for special cases.
Elli heard her Papa, Draco, and Severus enter the room. There had been no discernable change, but his aura had become stronger than before so that was a reason for hope.
Draco could not believe his first look at his beloved Harry. He seemed so small, so unlike the person he had fallen in love with. Harry always seemed full of life, always there; this body in the bed, this shell of a person, wasn’t his Harry.
Remus gently pushed Draco forward. “We think he can hear us. He just needs to know that he can come back now.”
Draco looked at Harry and carefully sat on the edge of the bed, and picked up Harry’s hand. He kissed the palm while tears ran down his face.
“Harry, love. You need to come back now. I need you here. I don’t think I can cope without you. I miss you already.” Draco looked up at Remus and Severus.
They both nodded their heads.
“Keep going, Draco. He needs to know you are here, and you are safe,” Severus whispered.
“Harry, I’m here with you now and we are both safe. We are here at Hogwarts. So are Elli, Remus, and Severus. Our family is OK, love. Please come back to us. We are incomplete without you. Please, Harry, come back to me. I need you so much...” choked Draco; he laid his head on Harry’s hand and started to cry.
Elli could not stand it any more. She bent down and hugged Draco, placing her hand over Draco’s and Harry’s, whispering, “Harry, please wake up. Come back to us. Draco is right - we are incomplete without you. We need you.”
Severus and Remus saw what their children were doing, so they both went and stood beside them, both placing their hands over the children’s.
They stayed with him for eight days, with Poppy and Minerva bullying and badgering them all to eat and get a little sleep, which no one wanted as they all felt that if they slept then they might miss something important.
On the ninth morning, Elli and Draco were sitting by Harry’s bedside. Draco was reading quietly to Elli, whilst holding one of Harry’s hands. Remus was lying on the bed next to Harry’s, and Severus was seated in a chair just watching the children.
Severus was the first to notice the flickering of Harry’s eyelids and the moving of his lips, but Draco was the first to feel Harry’s fingers weakly grasping his.
Severus quickly left to find Poppy.
Draco gasped, “Harry!”
Everyone watched as Harry slowly opened his eyes to be met with Draco by his bedside, tears running down his face, and Elli and Remus standing behind him. Poppy and Severus came into the room and they were all moved to the side of the room whilst healing spells and diagnostic spells were performed on Harry.
After what seemed like an eternity, Poppy turned to Harry with a smile. Draco came running over and held Harry’s hand. She raised her eyebrow, but smiled at the two boys.
“Well, Harry. You seem to have been lucky again, except for a low magic field. You seem fine, but I would like to keep you here for a couple of days to make sure.” With a last look at the two boys, she left the room.
Harry looked up at Draco, and gently pulled his face down to his and caught his lips in a loving kiss.
Draco pressed his forehead against Harry’s. “I thought I had lost you, Harry.”
“You nearly did,” Harry replied. Draco laid his head on Harry’s chest and soon Harry could feel the sobs emanating from his boyfriend. He just put his arms around him and held on.
Remus stood watching the scene on the bed with tears in his eyes. He started as he felt arms come around his waist and then he relaxed as he felt Severus’ lips on the back of his neck. “They’ll be OK, Remy; don’t worry. If they need anything then we will be there for them. We won’t let them go at it alone.” They both stood together watching their boys.
Elli waited for a few minutes until she knew that things were going to be okay, and then she carefully made her way to the door and silently went through it. It wasn’t that she was unhappy for Harry and Draco, or even Papa and Tatko; it was just that she wanted the same as they had. She wanted someone to love her unconditionally and forever; Elli knew that was what both couples had. She walked out of the hospital wing and made her way carefully outside, towards the lake.
