Chapter 10
McGonagall was pacing in front of Draco and Hermione shaking her head. “What shall I do with the two of you?” She had hoped that they would have been more careful and didn’t think that they would be so reckless as to expose their feeling on stage in front of the whole 7th year student body.
“There, there Minerva… It isn’t the most outrageous thing we have seen… Is it?!” Dumbledore portrait found the whole thing quiet amusing. “But, Albus… She is Gryffindor, he Slytherin… The world isn’t ready to accept a union like that.” The Headmistress sighed and again shook her head.
Draco felt stupid for once again letting his emotions gain control over his mind. He knew there would be trouble, but he just hoped that they weren’t thrown out of Hogwarts. He sighed and took a deep breath “Headmistress… I know I’ve messed up… And I know there are consequences… But if you let us stay…I believe that I could take care of myself and still live in Slytherin House…and as long as ‘Mi doesn’t go anywhere alone… She will be alright!”
McGonagall looked Draco straight into the eyes trying to read him, but he blocked her out. She hadn’t asked permission so couldn’t demand that he let her in. She sighed and looked at her favorite Gryffindor and asked her what she would do, if she was the head of house AND Headmistress at the same time?
Hermione met the older witch’s eyes and said that she would give love a chance and maybe let the two young students cast a protective charm on themselves to block the most dangerous attacks. The older witch nodded. “That’s what we’ll do then. Draco you say you can protect yourself… I hope you’re right! We’ll try to live a normal life, as normal as it can be at Hogwarts. I’ll let you two go to bed… In the morning I will address all the students and professors and demand that no harm comes to you two… And put down a rule that any harm to you is a ticket home!” McGonagall shook her head again and asked them to leave.
Draco frowned making Hermione look worried and ask what was wrong. “Where will I sit at breakfast? I’m sure I’m not welcome at the Slytherin table!” Hermione could see the problem!
When Draco came into the Slytherin Common Room it went quiet and all eyes fell on him. He saw his things were removed from the Headboy’s room and lay in a pill on the floor. Draco just let out a harsh short laugh and looked around “So…Where am I sleeping tonight?!” When no one answered he shook his head in disgust.
Daphne walked over to him with a honey sweet smile and said he could ask if he could sleep on the floor in the Gryffindor Common Room, he wasn’t welcome here. Draco sneered and looked for Blaise, but didn’t see him anywhere. “Where is Zabini?”
“Right here!” Blaise came down the stairs and looked in wonder at Draco’s things lying in a heap on the floor. “Moving out?” He looked at his friend. And Draco raised his shoulder and said that Daphne thought so. Blaise glared at his fiancée and talking to Draco with his eyes still fixed on Daphne he said that if he had a vote Draco stayed here, then turned around and gave Draco a hug. Laughing Blaise added,”But we’re changing rooms!” Draco rolled his eyes and sighed “Fine!”
Helping Draco move his things into the only single bed room, Blaise asked if he had shagged her yet. Draco groaned, “Not yet…But almost tonight!” Blaise sniggered and Draco threw a boot after him. “From what I’m hearing both Potter and Weasley are getting some…Quiet strange that the Slytherin Sexgod is hungry for love!” Draco growled, it was a nightmare wanting a girl so much, but being interrupted every bloody time it was starting to get interesting.
“If you need a shag I know of one girl out there that has the hot’s for you.” Draco felt a tug in his abdomen and was tempted to say yes… “Oh, is it tempting the great sex-deprived Slytherin Price?” Blaise teased making Draco narrow his eyes at him and hiss that it wasn’t nice to tempt him. He had real feelings for Hermione and even if it threatened to drive him crazy, he would wait.
Blaise raised his hands and said that that was his choice, then said goodnight, he had to go, because he had a nice warm body waiting for him in his bed! Draco growled and told him to get out; making Zabini laugh, lick his lips and quickly duck out of the door as Draco threw the other boot.
Draco made his bed and crawled in, tired to the bone and rather surprised that Blaise really seemed to be a friend. He fell asleep with thoughts of Hermione standing there on stage and singing to him.
“Mmmm… My God…” Draco woke in the dark, hazy with lust. Somebody was running their fingers and lips over his… NAKED BODY?! He sat up and called for his wand “Lumos” he shone the light down on the young girl who looked terrified.
“Please… Please don’t be mad… Blaise told me…” tears were building up in her eyes, but Draco was furious. He grabbed his bedcover and wrapped it round him, storming out the door and kicking in the one to Blaise’s room. “WHAT THE BLOODY HELL WHERE YOU THINKING!” Daphne and Blaise jump in their bed and Blaise looked a little nervous.
Zabini realized he had underestimated Draco’s feelings for the brunette and said he just needed to check. Draco hissed that if he ever did something like that again… Azkaban or not… He would… Grinding his teeth he left the couple shaken up.
As he entered his room the girl was gone and he reminded himself to always lock the door from now on. He had just reached the Chester draws when he heard the door close behind him. “You ungrateful little git.”
He turned around and was face with Blaise’ wand pointing straight at Draco’s chest. Draco backed away and ended up trapped in the corner. The black boy’s eyes were like two pieces of burning coal as he advanced in on Draco. He stopped with his face just inches from Draco’s, enjoying the panic flashing in Draco’s eyes.
“I’ve saved your blood-traitor ass by standing up for you when the house wanted you out. And then you complain of your nonexistent sex life… I deliver!” He was truly angry. He, Blaise Zabini, had gone out on a limb to help his friend. “And how do you thank me? By waking me up screaming like a woman… Maybe it was the wrong GIFT that I sent to your room.” He lowered his head so his lips were almost touching Draco’s, but didn’t lower his wand.
Draco panicked as Blaise’s lips gently touched his. He was trapped and couldn’t move and his half hearted attempts to push the other boy away just made Blaise deepen his kiss. Draco closed his eyes for only a minute as the kiss started to get to him and when Blaise’ tongue licked over his lips he caved in and kissed the black boy back.
Blaise put his wand on the drawers and pulled the band that was holding Draco’s hair back, running his fingers through the silky blonde hair. Grabbing it hard he forced Draco’s head back and ran his tongue from the quivering white boy’s neck to his ear and whispered, “So you’re still are easy to tempt I see.” The words felt like a burning hot dagger was japed into Draco’s stomach and he pushed Zabini away with such force the black boy tripped and fell to the floor, but he just laughed.
The two boys just looked at each other in silence for some time then Draco whispered in a threatening voice, “Don’t you ever do that again… It was a mistake last time… And I thought I made that clear!” It was how the rumour had begun… So much firewhiskey… alone in the common room… feeling lost after his father had been sent to Azkaban… Blaise tucking away a stray lock of hair behind Draco’s ear…
“Well, it might have been a mistake… But you liked it… And still do!” Blaise smirked. He knew neither of them was gay, but found it thrilling that he had that power over his friend. He slowly got up and walked up to Draco again. “I can’t keep the mob off of you if you keep playing with fire.” Blaise sounded as if he were in pain. He turned away and left Draco standing there alone, thinking it had been a bad idea to move back in to Slytherin House…
Hermione stood in the library trying to pick a book she had read twelve times already when she heard two girls giggling on the other side.
“Did you hear?” a light fluttery voice giggled “Draco Malfoy had a visitor in his bed to night!”
Hermione felt like someone had slapped her in the face, she didn’t want to hear anymore, but couldn’t move.
“But the funny part is… He rejected her!” the voice clearly found that part the best. “He pushed her out of bed and stormed out of his room and yelled at Blaise Zabini for trying to tempt him!” The other voice whispered that it clearly indicated the Slytherin Sexgod had lost it. It was so out of character for him to pass on free sex. The two girls giggled and the fluttery voice said she wished SHE could get him alone for just 5 minutes. “Then he wouldn’t say no!” Giggling the two girls left the library not realizing that Hermione had heard them.
Hermione was relieved, but still shaken. She hadn’t realized that Draco without a doubt had had a very active sex life. And the way she had rejected him more that once, would clearly be driving him mad. And still he refused a girl that plainly just jumped in to his bed with only one thing in her mind.
Ron and Harry sat at a table just few steps away, but had been busy reading up on Transfiguration and luckily hadn’t heard the gossip. Hermione went over and said she had a feeling that Draco was in trouble. And she was right…
Since there were no classes on Sundays and Draco needed to get out of the dungeon, he found himself by the lake. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something was up, but when he looked around he was alone on the lakeshore. He sat down and looked at the giant squid that was playing on the surface and he smiled.
“Hey… Blood-Traitor!” a male voice sounded close by and as Draco looked back over his shoulder he saw Crabbe and Goyle flanked by some younger house members. “What!” he snapped not in the mood for insults. “You father says hallo and asked me to give you this,” Goyle hissed and a sharp pain jolted through Draco’s body.
“This one is from me… Crucio!” Goyle yelled again making Draco cry out in pain and shock. He hadn’t considered the Crabbe and Goyle could actually find the nerve to curse him on school grounds. It stung like hell, but was nothing compared to what he use to. Panting in pain Draco narrowed his eyes and hissed that they better kill him when they had the chance!
“Expelliarmus!” Goyle’s wand flew in to the lake. The human wall of young Slytherins ran off not wanting to be caught. The younger students had just joined to see how Crucio worked and hadn’t bargained for the victim to be the former Slytherin Prince, but had been too scared to move.
Draco was grinding his teeth waiting for the curse to wear off… They would be so very sorry when the pain lowered just a bit… He felt a small warm hand on his chest and opened his eyes to see Hermione starring back at him… “We…we have to stop… meeting like this,” he whispered through his teeth making her smile. She held his hand until the pain was nothing more that a burning sensation and helped him sit up.
“Where are they?” Draco’s voice sounded so full of hate that Hermione let go of his hand. “Hag…Hagrid carried them away… They’re at McGonagall’s office… But please don’t…” Hermione looked scared and glanced to Harry for help.
Harry knelt down besides a malicious looking Draco. “Don’t do something you will regret…” He placed a hand on Draco’s arm and forced him to look at him. “No Unforgivables from you…Deal?” Draco sneered and in a low cold voice told Harry to let go of him. Harry didn’t have a choice and he let go. Draco got to his feet and walked up the path to the castle at a “I-Mean-Business” tempo, pushing by Ron on the way.
“Bloody Hell, Malfoy… Look where…” Ron stopped mid-sentence and cast a quick look down to Harry and Hermione who were heading up the path, faces blank, Hermione’s with fear in her eyes. He had clearly missed out on some action. “What’s up with Malfoy?”
“Goyle used the Crucio on him and now Malfoy is going to kill him.” Harry said and passed by a stunned Ron. “Blimey…” Ron murmured and turned around, following behind Harry and Hermione.
As the trio entered the courtyard they saw Hagrid lying immobilized and Crabbe frozen in a running pose. Draco held Goyle trapped against the fountain, his wand under Goyle jaw while Goyle was pleading for mercy.
“How dare you,” Draco said in a voice cold as the grave. “HOW DARE YOU?!” Goyle whimpered and closed his eyes preparing to meet his creator.
The trio was frozen as they watch the scene, Hermione whispering “Don’t do it… Don’t do it,” and gasped and turned her head when she saw Draco wand starting to glow. She jumped at the sound of something heavy hitting the ground and let out a sob.
A short laughing sound escaped Harry’s mouth, making Hermione turn her eyes back to the scene and she had to stop herself from bursting into giggles of relief. Draco hadn’t used any Unforgivables… He had just turned Goyle into a statue and an ugly one in fact. Now Draco just sat on the fountain edge and thought to himself that he really wasn’t a killer…
“Enough…” he sighed as Hermione came up to him. “Enough… It isn’t worth it… I’m leaving!” Hermione sat down beside him and took his hand in hers and leaned her head onto his shoulder, she couldn’t blame him. Since he had been back he had been mocked, kicked and now cursed by people that were supposed to be his friends.
“What about you’re N.E.W.T’s?” Harry asked, but Draco just shook his head. Hagrid came to and looked around. He saw the two Slytherin mischiefs frozen on the ground, and then his eyes caught Draco’s. “Thank you… Think the two little bastards would ‘ave killed me if you ‘aven’t stopped ‘em...” Hagrid looked really shocked. If someone just a few months prior and told him that Draco Malfoy would be saving his life in the future, he would have laughed and told them that they had had a little too much firewhiskey.
Draco just nodded, squished Hermione’s hand and stood up. When Hermione began to make a move to rise, he shook his head and said he needed to do this by himself and sent her a sad smile as he walked away.
“Isn’t there anyway he could stay and not be in danger from his own house members?” Harry asked Hagrid hoping his friend had a miracle up his sleeve. Hagrid frown, “He could… No that would be silly…” Hermione jumped to her feet “What Hagrid…?” and the gigantic man scratched his beard and frowned.
“He could join in as a part time professor… Then perhaps he would get some respect?” Hagrid said, not sure if it was a fare fetch idea… Neville Longbottom had joined Professor Sprout as an apprentice in Herbology, so why couldn’t Draco? “That a bloody brilliant idea, Hagrid!” Ron burst out and Hagrid looked proud and a little embarrassed.
Hermione started to run after Draco and soon Harry and Ron followed her. They just caught up with Draco as he said the password to the spiral staircase. “DRACO… Wait!” Harry yelled down the hallway making Draco turn around frowning. “We have a possible solution!” Hermione screamed and Draco leaned up against the wall with arms crossed waiting for them.
“Let… Let us just… catch…” Harry gasped and Draco nodded wondering what in the world they were up to… “You… You could become a… a part-time professor!” Ron gasped and made Draco raise his eyebrow in disbelieve… “Become what!”
“A part-time Professor… Maybe Flitwick would take you in as an apprentice… You are gifted with a great flare for charms.” The four youngsters turned their heads and saw the Headmistress coming down the stairs. ”Why haven’t I thought of that before?” The headmistress smiled and patted Draco on the shoulder, reassuring him that Crabbe and Goyle, as they spoke, were leaving the school grounds and wouldn’t be coming back.
“As a student-professor you’ll be offered you own office and would sit with the other professors at meals… Mr. Longbottom preferred to stay in his House as long as he is a student, so that means that it is your choice.” McGonagall smiled at the look of confusion in the young man’s eyes.
“If… If Professor Flitwick would have me…” Draco stuttered feeling dizzy. Just a second ago he had thought he would have to leave Hogwarts and never get his N.E.W.T’s. Now it seemed that he could stay and as a professor even…
Hermione started to dance in circles and Ron uttered “Professor Malfoy…Sounds creepy,” but smiled at the sight of Hermione being so excited. Harry grinned at Draco and said this would make a lot of problems disappear. Draco just couldn’t believe his luck!
“Come, Draco… Let see if Flitwick is up to having an apprentice.” McGonagall placed a gentle hand on Draco’s shoulder and led him smiling towards Flitwick’s office.
On Monday morning Draco stood grinning at the image he saw in the mirror. A tall, young, good looking blonde man, wearing a long black robe with Slytherin embroidery of his name on the left chest pocket, grinned back at him. He looked smashing!
He quickly combed his hair and tied it back leaving two strands of hair hang down on each side of his face framing it to bring out his light grey eyes in the best possible way. Bowing to his reflection he left the small side chamber to his new office and headed down to the great hall, looking forward to seeing the reaction from the other students.
It was quite strange that it hadn’t leaked out amongst the students that he had been offered the place as Flitwick’s assistant. Draco had been told to collect his things from the Slytherin House and the house-elves could move them to his new quarters. The murmur in Slytherin house as he did, was wondering if he had been expelled or just quit the remainder of his education.
Blaise had come up to him and waited for Draco to look up at him. “So… You’re leaving?” Draco didn’t answer just looked disappointed at his only real friend in their House. He stood up and said he was done and two house-elves appeared and then blinked away again with Draco’s remaining items. Without a word he walk out of his home for the last 6 ½ years and up the stairs, assumedly to say his goodbyes to the professors and the headmistress. Blaise felt a bit sorry for his friend, but Draco was to blame for his own fate, there were nothing he could do.
Draco had climbed the stairs to the third floor in a hurry, excited to see his new office. It was just across from the Charms classroom, which he had permission to uses whenever it wasn’t in use. He was met by The Golden Trio standing in front of his door. Hermione reached her hands out towards him and he smiled as he pulled her close and kissed her quick.
“Man! Do you have to do that in front of us?!” Ron complained making Hermione hit him with a flat hand over the chest and say he just had to get use to it! Draco tapped the lock and the door swung open to a fair sized office with a small fireplace. The only furniture in the room was a dusty armchair, an equally dusty writing desk with an old broken desk chair lying next to it on its side.
“Hmm… The place needs some work… “Draco ran a finger over the desk and wrinkled his nose seeing how dusty it was “… But it will be just fine.” He walked over to the knocked over chair and repaired it with a touch of his wand and smiled. “There… better already.” He smiled at the three at the door, the three he now called friends. “Want to give me a hand? I’ll put in a good word with Flitwick…”
Hermione smiled, pulled up her sleeves and started dusting of the fireplace, humming happily. Ron and Harry looked at each other and raised their shoulders in a Why-Not move then went into the small office and closed the door behind them.
They had worked through dinner and as the four looked around they were pleased with what they saw…Sort of anyway. As Gryffindors they didn’t like the chosen colours of silver, green and black, but as Draco pointed out he still was a Slytherin! All visible wood - panels, desk, chairs, and bookshelves - were in ebony, the curtains were dark green velvet with small silver serpent embroideries, wallpaper a shade darker green and the candleholders on the wall were high polished silver.
Draco had demanded privacy as he had fixed up the small side chamber that was to be his sleeping quarters. He naturally continued the same colour scheme as in the office, making the room dark green with touches of silver and black. He charmed the fireplace to only burn in silver and light blue. This was a room worthy of a new Slytherin professor!
They had said goodnight, Draco holding onto Hermione till they left, then kissed her softly and said that she were welcome to stay a little longer, but once more she declined his offer, making him wonder if she was a virgin after all.
As he walked in to the empty Great Hall, he felt pride in the fact that Flitwick had said that Draco didn’t needed to be an apprentice and that he would recommend he was made Junior Professor instead. “It will give me some spare time to tend to my hobbies... Oh, this is wonderful!” the small professor clapped his hands and that had settled it. And he became Professor Malfoy…
“Good Morning, Professor… Sleep well?” Madam Pomfrey came over and shook Draco’s hand with a smile. “I’m so proud of you…Finding the right side in the end!” Draco smiled and wished his mother could be here to witness this!
“We always start the day in the teachers lounge, discussing the students’ progress or mischiefs… You name has been used quiet a lot in there.” Madam Pomfrey laughed and escorted Draco to the small side chamber.
The other Professors looked up as he entered. Some smiled and bid him welcome to the staff and a few looked suspicious at him. Draco knew he had some convincing to do before they accepted him as on of them.
The sound of the hall filling with students made Draco’s stomach twirl. How would they react to seeing him as a superior? McGonagall came over and patted him on the shoulder. She said it was normal to be nervous on the first day and explained that he should stay in the lounge and wait for her to call him out. “Ohhh...this is going to be fun!” Dumbledore’s portrait chuckled from its place over the fireplace and it winked to Draco. “Knew you’d turn out alright… Didn’t I tell you Minerva?” And McGonagall sighed and said that, yes, he did.
“It’s time.” Madam Hooch looked at the magical clock that blinked. “It’s Time,” one of Dumbledore’s little jokes. Draco had sweaty palms as he stood in the shadows and waited to be called forth and join the rest of staff at the High-table.
When McGonagall began the morning greeting to the other students, Draco legs trembled, in a moment he would be called out and what would happen?
“Good morning, students, I first have some announcements. After an attack on a fellow student Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle are expelled and will not come back to Hogwarts.”
The hall rang out with voices commenting on the news. “Shhh… Quiet please!” McGonagall raised her hand demanding silence. And the murmur quieted down.
“Next, Professor Flitwick has requested the assistance of a Junior Professor and has hand picked the one he felt could take on the task of teaching the 1st through 3rd years in his place for the rest of the year.” Again the room buzzed with voices, but much lower that before. It was rather late for a new professor to take over Charm class and the professor had to be extremely good at Charms or else Flitwick wouldn’t have let a newcomer take over.
“Please give a warm welcome to Junior Professor Malfoy!” The room went totally quiet when Draco walked out of the side chamber and up the stairs to take the Headmistress’ hand. She smiled and showed him to his chair next to Flitwick.
First the students, not counting Hermione, Harry, Ron and Ginny, thought it was a joke, then the buzz of voices almost overwhelmed Draco, but he kept his face emotionless. “Is this a joke?” came from a voice he recognized as Daphne’s and he found her eyes and looked icily calm at her.
Next to her, Draco saw Blaise looking shocked, but when Draco caught his eyes the black boy’s lips curled into a smile and he stood up and began putting his hands together, whistling and chanting, “Draco, Draco, Draco.” Soon all students at the Slytherin table, well except for Daphne who still looked pissed, joined in as well as Harry, Hermione, Ron and Ginny.
Draco couldn’t help, but smirk he looked over at Hermione and grinned and leaned back on his chair amazed the Blaise still considered him a friend. McGonagall was pleased with the reaction of the student body and raised her hands and said, “Let breakfast begin!” and the tables filled with all sorts of delicious food. The headmistress called to Draco and reminded him that he still had to take his own N.E.W.T level classes and raised her goblet welcoming him on board.
After breakfast Draco walked down to meet Blaise who waited for him. “Look at you… Professor Malfoy.” Draco grinned and posed, looking sizzling hot. Blaise laughed and said that he bet all the girls would swoon for him even more now… And his classes would be oh, so popular!
“Excuse me… May I borrow the Professor for a moment?” The two boys turned and saw Hermione smiling shyly at Draco… “Ummm… Kind of see your point of view…” Blaise said and let his eyes wander up Hermione’s body and bit down on his lip, nodding and making Hermione very uncomfortable. “Don’t even try…!” Draco hissed and Blaise grinned and walked away.
“I don’t like the way he looked at me… Like I was a piece of meat. Isn’t he marrying that Greengrass girl?” Draco raised a hand and caressed her cheek and said that, yes, they were getting married, but that Blaise wasn’t a one-woman man. But if he ever touched her he wouldn’t be a man at all! Hermione blushed, she felt stupid to react that way… It was only Draco; an extremely good-looking Draco, but Draco, no more no less.
“Better get to class ‘Mi… I have to set a good example.” Draco smiled but shook his head when she wanted to kiss him. “Not while I’m Professor Malfoy… We can’t… School rules!” Hermione was hurt, but knew he was right and they walk to Transfiguration, side by side, but not touching.
The week went by fast and on Friday morning as Draco sat grading some 2nd year papers a knock on the door made him look up. “Enter…” he wondered who it could be this early. The headmistress walked in and Draco stood up in respect “Headmistress?” She smiled and asked if he had a moment to spare. Draco gestured to the fine carved ebony chair in front of the desk and waited till she sat, then sat down himself.
“I was wondering if you feel ready to take you N.E.W.T’s.?” The headmistress studied Draco’s face as she ask, wanting to witness any glimpse of doubt from the young man. Draco frowned,
“If I took them now I would pass no doubt… I only had one E on the midterm… Transfiguration as you knows… Think I can pass with an O in Transfiguration at this stage?” Draco looked so eager to ace all his exams, she had to smile… Only Hermione had the same yearning to be best… “I believe you’re ready or I wouldn’t ask!”
Draco frowned and nodded. He said if she believed him to be ready he would be glad to get the exams over with. He noted the dates for the exam down and smiled, thanking her for asking and following her to the door as she left. After closing the door he leaned back and banged his head back on the door grinning. He knew hard work lay in front of him, but he would be an N.E.W.T level graduate before Christmas.
Had it really only been six months since the night in the tower… The night that changed his life for ever… for the better… He smiled and in his heart he thanked Dumbledore for finding him worthy to save… “I promise to make amends… Hear me, Dumbledore? I want everyone to see you didn’t die in vain!” It was time for DADA and Draco got his books and satchel and locked the door behind him as he headed for class.
