Sudden Realisations
Resignedly Draco took his time putting his books away and waited for the rest of the class to leave. Finally he was alone with his godfather, and for the first time he looked up to meet his accusing glare. An answering flare of defiance rose in him but he remained silent, simply glaring back.
“You haven’t taken your potion!” Draco looked up in shock, this wasn’t the accusation he had expected, but he suddenly realised it was true… this morning in his hunger and his rush to class he had completely forgotten to take his daily dose of potion. Severus stood back for a second, taking in the quickly hidden look of shock that had flitted over his godsons face. “You haven’t eaten either?” he guessed, “how long?”
“Umm… maybe a week and a half.”
“Stupid! Do you have any idea? The whole class was staring at you! They saw you lose control over a drop of spilled blood! How long do you think it will be before someone puts it together?”
“They wont! I don’t look like a vampire! There are other reasons I might have been glad to see a Gryffindor cut his finger!”
“Well you didn’t act glad, or amused, only hungry! And maybe if you took your potion you wouldn’t look like a vampire, but… here!” Severus grabbed a piece of parchment from his desk and transfigured it into a mirror. Draco stared at his reflection silently. He’d avoided mirrors since he’d been turned, not willing to see the small changes that even the potion couldn’t stop, but now he was shocked. Silver eyes glinted dangerously above deep dark hollows, almost blue in his pale alabaster skin.
“They wont notice,” Draco whispered insistently “I look tired, but really, my eyes are grey anyway, and I didn’t look directly at anyone. I’ll go take the potion now, then I’ll stay in my room till tonight, feed off Crabbe or Goyle, by tomorrow everyone will have forgotten…”
“You’ll take your potion now, feed, and return to class. Then you’ll spend the rest of the day helping everyone forget your slip up by acting as normal as possibly.” Wordlessly Severus turned and collected a small vial of shimmery potion Draco recognised from his desk. In one swallow it was gone, and then Severus pulled up his sleave, revealing the pulse point in his wrist. Draco stared up at him, horrified. Severus didn’t respond and Draco finally lowered his mouth over the pale wrist of his godfather, feeling his canines grow longer. Blood spurted into his mouth, hot and tangy. Severus’ blood tasted of his anger but also of love. It was strange; Draco hadn’t known that Severus loved him. Love tasted sweeter then the bitter jealousy and greed that Goyle tasted of, or the thick bland indifference of Crabbe.
Finally Severus pushed him away and Draco stood feeling much stronger, and less ashamed then when he was forced to ask, almost beg his friends for help. “Go to class Draco. Tell the teacher I asked your assistance setting up for my next class. And don’t let this happen again.”

As soon as they were in the corridor Harry turned to Hermione; “well?”
She rolled her eyes, “well what?”
“Well do you still think there’s nothing wrong with Malfoy?”
“Why? Because he didn’t dob you in for breaking his leg? I’d have thought you’d be glad to postpone your expulsion for a bit longer?” Harry stared at her incredulously until at last she glanced back at him, “oh ok, so that was weird.”
“This is beyond weird! He ignores us, then when he does get the chance to get me in trouble, maybe even expelled, he acts like it never happened. And now he looks like he hasn’t slept in about two years. Oh and lets not forget him looking at a cut on Neville’s hand like it was the most fascinating thing he’s ever seen.”
“I don’t know… maybe he was seeing if he was ok…”
Harry and Ron shook their heads and exchanged sad looks over her head while Ron mouthed one word; “mental”.
“Maybe he’s discovered a sudden fascination with blood! Maybe he’s a vampire!” Ron looked exceedingly pleased with his theory. Hermione just shook her head and sped up. Harry on the other hand suddenly slowed, remembering the titles of the books Malfoy had dropped the other day in the hall, remembering a shouted accusation he had never imagined might have been true at the time “Want to be a vampire too now?”
