Chapter 9

Mutant VS. Magic

Chapter 9

Logan woke up to find Hermione gone and a note on her pillow. With shaking hands, he read the note.

Dear Logan,

Please don’t be worried. I needed to see Jean and Eric. I could never live with myself if I didn’t at least try to get them to realize that Voldemort would kill them just as soon as he would help them.

I should be back shortly after ten in the morning. If anyone asks where I am, tell them I’m still sleeping. If they question it, show them the empty sleeping draught vial on the nightstand. Then you can say that I still haven’t been sleeping well.
I will be back soon....and one more thing. If you try to follow me, I will kick your ass from here to the moon and back. This is something I need to do on my own. I’ll be back soon...I PROMISE!

Love,
Hermione

Logan cursed quietly. As much as he wanted to go after her, he knew she would make good on her promise he didn't want to try her. With a heavy sigh, he got out of bed and headed to get a shower.

Hermione stood near a group of trees. She had arrived at Magneto and Voldemort’s camp. She was a bit shocked at Magneto’s speech to the mutants and Death Eaters gathered. She knew that Jean had felt her presence once she arrived and now she was just waiting.

“You have a lot of guts coming here Hermione,” Eric said as he and Jean approached her.

“Eric, you told me once that you valued my opinion as much if not a little more than you did Uncle Charles’. Is that still true?” Hermione asked.

“You know it is my dear,” Eric answered gently.

“Then listen to me now. You must stop working with Voldemort. You, Jean, and the other mutants that have joined you are all in danger!” Hermione said.

“You are just trying to stop the inevitable Phoenix,” Jean hissed.

“No I’m not. Uncle Charles and I knew that eventually it would come down to this war. Mutant versus Mutant. But I know Voldemort. He will kill you just as quickly as he would help you. Please, listen to me just this once Eric. You must get away from him,” Hermione pleaded.

“My dear Hermione, thanks to him, my army is stronger. Besides, I would never allow someone else to influence or derail my plans,” Eric stated.

“Voldemort’s strength is the ability to manipulate people. Please Uncle Eric. If not for me, then do it for Uncle Charles,” Hermione stated.

“We’ve heard enough Hermione. Return now, before I hurt you,” Jean said.

Hermione looked from Jean to Eric. She knew they would not listen to her. With a heavy sigh she apparated back to her room at the mansion.

Logan stood at the marker for Charles. Slowly he dropped to his knees and began speaking to the marble stone.

“Professor, I’m sorry. I failed you. I should have protected you. I hope wherever you are, you can forgive me.” He paused...unsure as to how he wanted to continue “There was something I wanted to ask you, but... then this all happened. I wanted your permission to marry Hermione. I know now that she is the only woman for me. I plan on asking her tonight and I hope I have your permission. I swear to you, I-will-take-care-of-her.” he spoke every word clearly. “She will never want for anything, Thank you sir.” Logan whispered.

He placed his hand on the marker then rose to his feet. He turned and re-entered the mansion. He went straight for Scott’s room. He found Scott staring out the window. Logan cleared his throat.

“Logan, was there something you needed?” Scott asked.

“Yeah. Can I borrow your bike? I have an important errand to run,” Logan answered.

“What kind of errand?” Scott replied.

“Something special for Hermione. I wanted to do it before she woke up. She hasn’t been sleeping well and took a sleeping draught. She was still asleep when I checked up on her about ten minutes ago,” Logan explained, feeling bad about lying to Scott.

“Sure. Just don’t forget to fill it up,” Scott smiled as he tossed the keys to Logan.

“You got it. Thanks,” Logan smirked.

Hermione stepped out of the shower. The hot shower had helped her tense muscles, but it didn’t help the ache in her heart. She had really hoped that Eric and Jean would have listened to her about Voldemort, but apparently she had underestimated them. Ten minutes later, she was dressed and heading for the kitchen for some food. She entered to find Warren sitting at the bar.

“Good morning Warren,” she smiled.

“Morning,” he said.

“How are you adjusting? Especially with having Draco and Harry as room mates,” she
asked with a chuckle.

“I’m adjusting just fine. As for Harry and Draco, they’ve been telling me about Hogwarts. The school sounds fascinating. I would love to maybe see it someday,” he answered.

“Well, I might be able to arrange a tour for you,” she smiled.

“How are you doing? I mean with your uncle passing away and everything?”

“I’m hanging in there. Just taking things one day at a time. I still have a bit of trouble sleeping, but I know that will pass with time,”

“You’re right. I remember when my mother died, I had the same problems. After a few weeks though, it passed and things began getting back to normal,”

Hermione smiled at him. Just then Severus entered the kitchen. “Did that potion I gave you yesterday help?”

“Yes it did, thank you Professor. I just got up about twenty minutes ago,” she answered.

“So, what can I do to help? I feel bad just sitting here not helping out in some way,”
Warren asked.

“Well, what kind of skills do you have? Besides the whole flying thing,” Hermione replied.

“I have a degree in English Literature,” he said.

“Then, you can take over Uncle Charles’s class,” she smiled.

“When do you want me to start?” he asked with a bright smile.

“In the morning. I will inform the students. His schedule and lesson plans should be in the top drawer of his desk,” she answered.

Warren nodded and left the kitchen. “I think you just made his day,” Severus said.

“I’m glad. Besides, some of the students were asking about their literature class. Life goes on. That’s what Uncle Charles used to tell me,” Hermione replied.

Logan was pacing his and Hermione’s bedroom. He was nervous as hell about proposing to her. There was still a part of him that feared she would say no. He froze when he heard the door knob turning.

“Oh my god! What is this!” Hermione gasped.

The room was covered with candles and her favorite flowers: Tigerliliy and Jasmine.
Standing in the middle of the room was Logan. He wore a black T-shirt, faded blue jeans, and his trademark black boots.

“Hermione, there’s something I wanted to do before the Professor died, but I could never gather the courage to do it. But now, I think it’s the perfect time. Please sit,” Logan said as he gestured for the edge of the bed.

With a quizzical look, she did as he requested. He took a deep breath then knelt in front of her. “Hermione, you are the best thing that has ever happened in my life. I know it took me a while to realize it, but now that I have you, I don’t want to lose you. Hermione, will you become my wife?”

Hermione was shocked. Of all the things she expected, this was the last thing she expected. “Yes Logan. I will marry you,” she answered tearfully.

Logan grinned as he reached into his pocket and pulled out the ring box. Hermione gasped when she spotted the diamond and sapphire engagement ring. He removed the ring and gently slid it onto her finger.

“I swear I will take care of you,” he whispered.

“I know you will. Just as I will take care of you,” she whispered back.

Logan pulled her into his arms and kissed her. Hermione tangled her fingers in his hair as the two tumbled back onto the bed. For the moment nothing existed except the two of
them.
