Death Eater and Truth
Hermione ran down the hall looking for a place to hide. She couldn’t believe what she had just seen. How could he do this to her? Was he really the kind of guy who could make love to a girl and then move on the very next day to someone else? She didn’t think he was, she had fallen in love with him after all. Maybe that was it, maybe he told her he loved her just so he could sleep with her, only to, once he had her, leave her and move on to the next. She was nothing but a conquest to him, just like she would have been to Sirius. How could she have been so stupid?
“Trouble in puppy paradise?” came a sneering voice from a few feet away where she was currently standing--wait, when did she stop running?
“Go away Snape, I don’t need you laughing at me too, just like everyone else will,” she mumbled quietly sobbing into her hands.
“I wasn’t going to laugh at you, Granger. What did he do to you? I’ve never seen the Gryffindor Princess fall apart before. It’s quite repulsive actually,” he spoke as he inched closer to the crying girl.
“I don’t want to talk about it. I’m just being stupid,” she slowly composed herself and stood up tall. She was not going to be seen as weak in front of a Slytherin. She was still human though and added, “Thank you for not laughing, or cursing me when I wasn’t looking.”
He looked shocked for a moment before replying, “I only curse Potter and Black because they’ll try to get me otherwise. I have no need to curse you, yet.”
“Well, I’m not one to judge, but you sound a bit hypocritical to me. Perhaps if you stopped cursing each other, you could also stop hating each other? But since neither of you are willing to try, I guess it will never work, huh?” she said, grinning slightly. She had grown rather fond of the strange young man. He may be in dire need of some hygiene tips, but he was highly intelligent and she liked his witty comebacks.
They wound up talking for some time when they heard voices coming their way. “Quick, in here,” Snape said, pulling her into a wall with no door, which had a very small room the size of a broom cupboard.
“What, afraid of what they’ll say if they see a Slytherin and a Gryffindor actually talking?” she asked rather cheekily.
He laughed slightly, well, as much as he ever laughed, and said, “Yes, actually, it would make me appear somewhat human to be seen comforting a crying girl, and I can’t have that on my reputation. I also would rather doubt you‘d want to be seen in your condition.”
“I haven’t been crying for over an hour Severus, so I think we can move beyond that. Besides, you are human you know,” she said gently, while touching his left arm.
He winced noticeably and she could hear the air hissing between his teeth. “Oh, I see,” she said calmly as she slowly moved her hand down to his. She took the sleeve and gently pulled it up to reveal a black skull with a snake coming from it’s mouth. When she looked up at him he looked, dare she say it, ashamed?
“Severus, you are so much better then this. You’re not like them, you’re so much more, with your own thoughts and agendas. I never pegged you to be one to do someone else’s bidding,” she said sadly, slowly shaking her head. “I never thought you would call a man so evil and manipulative ‘Master’ or ‘Lord’.”
He looked slightly angry at her and spat, “I’ll keep your secret if you keep mine, werewolf.”
“You don’t need to threaten me. I’m just, well, disappointed is all. You could do such great things, you could even help take down your new ‘Dark Lord’ and I just never thought you would join him to do things like torture Muggles,” she lowered her voice in sadness, “or muggle-borns like me. Should I be scared of you, Severus?” she asked, looking into his eyes and challenging him to answer.
“No, I won’t hurt you the Gryffindor Princesses. As much as I hate Potter, Black, and Lupin, I wouldn’t hurt them because of you and Lily. But if I find out Lupin… Never mind. We should get going. I think we missed lunch,” he said, changing the subject.
Hermione allowed him to divert his eyes and look away. This was a huge loss for the good side and, she also felt, a huge loss for Snape himself as well. “I can get us into the kitchens if you’d like.”
“Can we get there without being seen?” he asked as she nodded her head. “Okay, let’s go. I’m starving.”
They quietly walked to the portrait and she tickled it. She turned the handle wondering to herself how she knew to do this. The Marauders had never shown her this little trick, but she just knew how to do it. Shaking off the weird feeling, she walked into the kitchen and was immediately met with house elves. They grabbed some food, thanked the elves, and moved to make their way to their separate common rooms.
Hermione decided she really didn’t want to see everyone and thought about walking to the lake and finishing her lunch there. After strolling around the lake a few times, she heard the angry voices of men arguing in the shadows nearby. She hurriedly looked for a place to hide but found none. The voices were getting closer and angrier and she was starting to panic. Suddenly she felt herself melt all over and her body change. “What’s happening to me? I’m turning?! I can’t be turning, It’s not the full moon, it‘s not even night,” she thought as she quickly backed away and under a short bush.
“What do you know of the girl? I know you know something and our Master wants answers!” hissed a man very angrily, right in front of her. Although Hermione couldn’t see him very well, she could vaguely make out the long blond hair and tall stature of the man.
Another man answered, this voice, however, surprised Hermione. If she wasn’t newly transformed she would have gasped. “I know nothing of the girl except she is a Gryffindor and friends with Potter and his group of pathetic friends. When and if I know more, I’ll let you know, Lucius, but in the meantime, I have to be going,” Severus said with just as much contempt in his voice to be somewhat scary.
“Make sure that you do, Severus. Our Master is still waiting on you to prove yourself to him, and so are we,” he added before stalking away, leaving Snape alone and looking murderous.
Hermione slowly walked out and inched closer to him. He gasped and jumped back when he saw her. He withdrew his wand, pointed it at her, and waited. It was then she realized she still looked like a wolf and willed herself to turn back. She could feel her body tingle and lengthen again, and was standing in front of Snape, who had the most shocked look on his face she had ever seen.
“Yes, it was quite the shock to me as well. Here I was, strolling around and eating my lunch, when I heard angry voices. I was looking for a place to hide, in case they were, you know, Death Eaters or something,” she said, and he didn’t miss her sly smile. “I started to panic when I suddenly changed. I wonder if I can do it again.”
“I thought you were a werewolf,” he said quickly looking around, “I didn’t know you were an animagus.”
“Your friend is gone, I can’t smell him anymore. Neither did I, like I said, I started to panic when I changed. This is, however, how I look like when I’m transformed.” she replied.
She thought about her new form and willed herself to change back, just to see if she could. She felt herself tingling and changing, and there she was again, a wolf. She concentrated on her human form and changed again.
“Wow, this is very weird.” she said in a strained voice.
“You’re telling me, and you didn’t know you could it?” he asked as she shook her head no. “Interesting. You know Princess, your wolf isn’t very scary, I’m surprised.”
“Werewolves are misunderstood individuals, Severus. Sure, we become monsters once a month, but otherwise we’re normal. There are a few physical side effects after the transformation and changing is brutal, but…I’m sorry, I know you don’t want to hear this. I better head back up. Hopefully without seeing anyone. Goodbye, Severus.”
“Goodbye. Oh and Hermione, I could be wrong and I don’t, well you know, like you, but if he hurt you, then he didn’t deserve you in the first place. I guess we’ll go back to hating each other tomorrow then,” he said looking at her strangely.
“I have never hated you, just some of the things you’ve done. I know its your life, but if you talked to Dumbledore, I know he’d help you. He gives second chances when they are deserved. You deserve so much more than that,” she said pointing to his left arm. “By the way, who are you spying on, or can you tell me?”
He looked at her and said simply, “you, but, as you heard, I didn’t say anything. The Dark Lord has taken an interest in the Gryffindor Princesses and Potter’s gang. You should be careful.”
“Thank you, Severus,” she said as she walked over and gently kissed his cheek. “I’ll see you in the morning.”
She walked around, lost in thought, until dark before heading back to the castle and up to the Fat Lady. Luckily, she didn’t see anyone, not even Peeves was out. She could handle another detention, she just didn’t want to talk to anyone. Upon entering the common room she saw the guys and Lily, but continued walking up to her dorm, ignoring the shouts of her name. Lily followed her up. “Where have you been? You weren’t in class or at lunch. Then you missed dinner and I was getting worried about you. I didn’t tell anyone what we saw, and I won’t kill Remus until you say I can. He did seem very worried about you though.”
Hermione started to cry. “Yea, sure. You know Lily, I was so stupid to think he cared, to think he could love me. He just used me until he got what he wanted, and now he’s moving on. All the while, I’m left feeling like my heart is being ripped out of my chest and I just don’t know what to do. How do I make it stop hurting?” Hermione sobbed, tears flowing freely down her face as she slid to the floor. “How do I live without him, having to see him everywhere, knowing he made me fall in love with him and then threw it away? What am I supposed to do?”
“You slept with him?” Lily asked quietly and Hermione nodded her head.
She started sobbing even harder as Lily knelt down beside her, cradling her head and holding her tight. “You should talk to him, Hermione. Maybe we didn’t get the full picture, maybe there’s more to it. I just know Remus is in love with you. It’s written all over his stupid face every time he looks at you. He looked really confused at lunch and almost panicky at dinner. Then he looked hurt when you just walked by him downstairs, he looked really hurt actually. Go talk to him, get his side of things and then go from there.”
“I don’t think I can. I’m afraid to see him right now. Wow, I missed dinner?” Hermione said, wiping her eyes as her tears dried. Maybe Lily was right, maybe there was more to it then she knew. “No, you’re right, will you tell him to meet me in the Room of Requirement in a few minutes?”
“Of course hon, you sneak out and I’ll go tell him,” Lily replied. She was desperately hoping that the two would make up. She really hoped they made up before they went to Hogsmeade in two days. She slowly got up and went downstairs to find all the guys gone. When she looked around, a fifth year just pointed up the stairs to the boys dormitory. Nodding her head in thanks, she walked up the steps.
“Hey guys, have you seen Remus, I need to talk to him.” She said, looking around the room. James and Peter were sitting on the bed in front of Remus’ in which the boy in question was sitting slump shouldered with his head down. Sirius was sitting beside Remus, and nodded to Lily when she opened the door.
Finally Remus looked back to her. “What’s up Lil? Did you talk to Hermione? What’s wrong with her, do you know?” he asked hopefully.
“Yea, I talked to her. You should really do that yourself though. She wants you to meet her in the Room of Requirement in a few minutes. Will you go? You two should really talk,” Lily said, walking over and sitting beside Remus, touching his shoulder gently.
“Okay, I’ll be back later guys,” he said as he walked slowly away. He still had no idea what he had done to make her so upset, but wanted to talk to her about it. He just hoped she wasn’t regretting last night. That really was the best night of his life. Maybe she decided she didn’t want him anymore. He was panicking at that thought and started to walk quicker, making sure the invisibility cloak wasn’t allowing his feet to show.
“So, Lils, what’s going on?” James asked worriedly.
“It’s not really my place to tell, but Hermione and I saw something today, something that really upset her,” Lily said hesitantly.
“Evans, you will tell us what you know now, or we’ll drag it out of you,” growled Sirius.
“Easy Padfoot,” James admonished. “Please, Lily.”
“Ok, evidently Hermione and Remus, um..” she broke off.
“Hermione and Remus, what?”
“Well, she said they had sex.”
“THEY DID WHAT?!” the three shouted in unison, making Lily recoil.
“Well, really, it was expected guys, come on. Anyway, this morning as we were returning to class, she saw Remus with Dessy out in the hall. What we saw looked like he was ready to um, take her right there, actually.”
“Oh no!” James and Sirius groaned. “Well, at least they’re talking about it now, right?” James asked.
“Yes, so I get to kill him when he gets back!” Sirius said angrily. “I said two feet apart! TWO FEET!”
When Remus reached the seventh floor corridor he walked over to the new door. Turning the handle, he walked inside to find two chairs, much like the ones in the common room, placed in front of a fire. Walking over to Hermione’s chair he said, “hey, you wanted to talk?”
“Yes,” she replied standing to look at him with her arms crossed protectively over herself. “I know I’m going to sound stupid and make a total fool of myself no matter how I say this, so I’ll just say it quick and then you can leave. I saw you this morning with Dessy. I just didn’t know I meant so little to you. All you wanted was a good shag before you moved on to the next girl. I could have expected that from Sirius, but not from you, Remus. I didn’t know you were the type of guy that would tell a girl he loved her just to get her into bed.”
She looked up at his face, seeing his very shocked expression. “Wh..what?! Hermione, you can’t be serious!! Of course I love you! I think I loved you the minute you wandered up to us. Dessy was coming on to me, but when she went to kiss me, I pushed her against the wall. I held her there and told her, in no uncertain terms, that I was in love with you, Hermione, only you. She got a little peeved, but then walked away. Hermione, I could never be with someone else, I gave my heart to you.”
Hermione had tears streaming down her face for the third time that day. Suddenly she was flinging herself at Remus saying, “Oh Remus, I’m so sorry! Please forgive me.” She wasn’t sure how she knew he wasn’t lying to her, she just knew. She knew in her heart he was telling the truth and she was overjoyed.
He hugged her to him and started kissing her tears away. Before long, their lips met and they kissed each other hungrily. There was no hesitation, no awkwardness like the night before. There was just passion. Passion between two people madly in love. When they finally looked up, they both saw the bed that had just appeared not ten feet away from them. Hermione looked up at Remus and said, “mmm, funny, this room really does think of everything.”
Remus replied, “it would be a shame to let it all go to waste don’t you think?”
“Oh yes, a horrible shame,” she said grinning back up at him as she slowly led him to the bed.
An hour later, a disheveled Remus and Hermione made their way to the common room. After being told off for waking the Fat Lady up yet again, they hopped through the portrait door and into the common room. “You know, I really caught a lot of grief from Sirius today. He kept saying I was so horrible in bed that I scared you away, he’d be mad if he found out we really did sleep together. Funny, James didn’t say anything, but Sirius thought it was hysterical.”
“Mmmm, funny. Well, if you’d like, I could go up and tell them what happened. Then tell them how you shagged me senseless, twice, just now. Want me to go up with you?”
“I would love nothing more then for you to go to bed with me, but it’s already after one and you’ve had a hard enough day. Just love me and I’ll see you tomorrow.” He whispered as he gently kissed her neck.
She was melting under his touch as she softly murmured, “always, my love, I’ll always love you.”
He kissed her soundly on the lips and said, “I’ll always love you too, doll. And you should trust me from now on. Now go to bed and I’ll meet you here before breakfast in the morning. You won’t be sneaking off without me again,” he said grinning at her. He laughed when she grabbed his rear before turning to walk upstairs.
Walking back up the steps to her dorm, she felt lighter and happier then she had in a long time. She walked into her room and towards Lily’s bed. “Lil, you awake? Come on Lily,” she said, shaking the sleeping redhead, “I know you’re awake, come on, I need to tell you something.”
“Hermione, what is it? Is something wrong? I couldn‘t stay awake,” Lily replied groggily.
“Good, you’re awake,” Hermione said, ignoring the glare from Lily. “I just wanted to say thank you, for talking me into talking to Remus. You were right, it was a huge misunderstanding. Thank you so much.”
“You’re welcome. I overheard James and Remus talking about a girl hitting on Remus. I just assumed Dessy was the girl. Then I heard Remus say that he loves you and couldn’t imagine being with anyone else,” said Lily as she promptly fell back to sleep. Hermione walked over to her bed. As she climbed in, she anxiously began awaiting the dreams of Remus she hoped would fill her night.
Remus walked slowly up to his room, opened the door quietly, and headed to his bed. Suddenly a light flickered on and he groaned.
“What is it guys?” he asked, dreading the answer.
“Made up have you?” Sirius asked accusingly.
“Yes, actually. Hermione saw Dessy come on to me in the hall and got rather upset, but everything is fine now.”
“Great,” said James sarcastically.
“Ok, am I missing something here?” Remus asked with obvious confusion.
“No, not now,” Sirius said angrily, “you missed the whole ‘two feet between you rule’!”
“What? Oh,” Remus said as realization dawned on him. “So that’s what this is about. How did you find out?”
“Lily,” James said, “when you left she told us what Hermione had said. You know girls don’t keep secrets. That doesn’t seem to ring true for you though.”
“Well,” Remus began exasperatedly, “had I told you, then we would just have been having this conversation. I thought I would delay the inevitable.”
“Either way, you should have told us. No, wait, you just shouldn’t have done it!” Sirius said.
“Kettle calling Pot there, Padfoot?” Remus asked, accusation swirling in his own voice. “Like you haven’t been with more girls in Hogwarts than anyone else that’s ever lived.”
“But this is Hermione we’re talking about,” James started but was cut off as Remus growled.
“Yes, Hermione, remember, MY girlfriend! She may be a Marauder now, but she’s still my girlfriend! And for you information, she practically seduced me!” he shouted as he flung his covers off his bed.
They all huffed a bit, then settled in for the night and went to sleep.
The next morning, the tension between the guys was noticeable, but at breakfast Hermione became very excited.
“I can’t believe I forgot! Well, I can after everything else, but I have something huge to show you guys!” she said as everyone looked at her with confusion.
“What is it?” Remus asked curiously, ignoring the glares he received as he took her hand.
Lily looked at him with hurt and confusion every time he glared in her direction, but kept her questions to herself for now. She knew something was up with the guys, but decided to let Hermione change the subject and hopefully break the tension.
“Since we have a free period after Charms, let’s go to the Forbidden Forest and I’ll show you!”
“It’s something of Hagrid’s isn’t it?” Peter groaned and the others laughed, before looking nervously back at Hermione. He had told them all recently about the new dragon he wanted to adopt, along with the three headed puppy he had heard about. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that he very well may do that.
“No, it’s better! It’s the coolest thing! And it’s something I can do, that you’ll have to wait and see!”
They finished their breakfast and went to Charms. Hermione had tried asking Remus what was up with everyone several times, but he managed to avoid the subject, saying he’d tell her later, then begging her to tell him her surprise.
After class they walked to the Forest, waving at Hagrid as they walked by.
“Don’t ye go on ther, now. Stay to the edge if ye know what’s good fer yer,” he called after them.
“Will do Hagrid!” James shouted back as they ran around the Forest boundary and out of sight of Hagrid’s hut.
“Ok, Gyps, let’s see it!” he said excitedly, but she was nowhere to be seen.
“Come find me!” they heard her yell and took off to find her.
Before she could change however, someone tackled her from behind. She wrestled fiercely with her attacker before he forcefully pinned her to the ground.
“Easy, love, it’s just me!” Remus said, laughing. “I thought you were going to kill me there. So,” he said, still straddling her waist, “couldn’t you smell me? You’ve had that sense for a while now, you should be able to use it.”
“I was, um, thinking about something else,” she said, grinning slyly, but slightly miffed that he ruined her surprise. “Besides, my hearing has increased too.”
Remus began to tickle her relentlessly until she begged him to stop. “Remus, I’m going to pee, let me up!“ Laughing, he started to stand up when he suddenly froze. The girl beneath him, his sweet, beautiful, wonderful Hermione, was gone. In her place was a werewolf! He jumped up in fright, but watched her cautiously. If possible, she seemed to be laughing at him.
She suddenly lunged at him and knocked him over as he yelled loudly. She playfully growled over top of him as she straddled him, but in one swift move, he pinned her down by the neck. He didn’t hurt her, but was protecting himself, so she thought she’d play a little more with him. She lay still until he released her, then lunged on top of him again. This time however, she was knocked over by something large. She yelped with pain as she skidded across the broken branches and rocks before coming to a stop. When she looked up, she saw a big black dog standing before her, eyeing her cautiously, and her other three friends and her boyfriend with their wands drawn and pointing right at her.
Slowly she began to stand up. The pain in her side diminishing as she moved. She then willed herself to turn back to her human form, and there she was. The others gasped loudly and Lily screamed. Sirius, too, returned to his human state and just stared at her.
“Well, that didn’t go as planned. The idea was that I would scare you, not get attacked,” she said, dusting herself off.
“Hermione, um, how can you do that?” Remus asked warily.
“I have no idea. I was by the lake the other day talking to Severus when it happened. I was able to change back and forth and have been ever since.”
“Why were you talking to Snape?” Sirius asked, careful to use the boy’s name.
“Because I was avoiding Remus,” she said guiltily as he moved over to her and dusted off her back. “I just happened to run into him there and we were talking.”
“Right, ok. Maybe you should avoid him as well as Remus,” Sirius said grouchily.
“What?” Hermione asked as she looked at him. “Why would I avoid Remus now?”
“Good question, mate,” Remus said, “you want to finish what you’re thinking now, or let go of it completely?”
“Fine! Whatever! I still don’t like it!” Sirius said, throwing his arms down to his sides.
“Don’t like what?” Hermione asked.
“You and him, ok? I just don’t like it.”
“But, you said,…I thought… you said you were ok with us being together,” she said.
“Being together, yes, but not being together!”
“Sirius, grow up already!” Remus said, his voice rising.
“Will someone tell me what the hell is going on here?” Hermione yelled.
Finally Lily walked over and whispered in her ear, “they know you and Remus slept together. They’re just being the overprotective big brother types.”
“Ok, my boys,” Hermione ground out walking over to the three, “I am a big girl. I can do what I want with who I want. And I want Remus. So, if you have a problem with that, then I suggest you get over it and quick. Do I make myself clear?”
Everyone there stared at her stunned. Slowly, one by one, the three boys looked at her and nodded. Then Sirius said, “I’m sorry, you’re right. Sorry, mate,” he said looking at Remus.
Hermione grinned and changed into her wolf form, startling everyone. She grabbed Sirius’ leg and tugged gently, then ran away. She waited on him to get the idea and as he changed, she took off with him chasing after her. The others shook their heads and laughed. Suddenly James changed into his stag form, which Lily found very impressive, and chased after them as well.
“Don’t you want to join?” Remus asked Peter as he laughed at James.
“No, I better head back. I have detention with McGonagall again. She’s still made at me and says I have detention for the next week,” he groaned as he walked out of the Forest.
A/N: Yay me! I'll post another one too, because I love you all so much!
“Trouble in puppy paradise?” came a sneering voice from a few feet away where she was currently standing--wait, when did she stop running?
“Go away Snape, I don’t need you laughing at me too, just like everyone else will,” she mumbled quietly sobbing into her hands.
