Restful Sleep
“I’m just so tired all the time.” Hermione said quietly.
“Don’t you sleep anymore?”
“I do. But it’s not really restful. I normally wake up more exhausted than I started.”
“Is there anything that makes it better?”
“The only times I remember sleeping well was when I used to sleep with my mother while my father was out of town. I guess it’s just whether or not I feel safe. Nothing makes me feel that way anymore.”
Snape turned her around. “Do I scare you?”
“Well, I guess not. I do feel kinda safe around you.”
“Then why don’t you try sleeping down here. You can take a nap and I’ll work in the lab or read.”
“I-I guess. I don’t want to be a bother though.”
Snape dragged her in the direction of his bedroom. “It’s not a bother. I just want you to get better, okay?” He showed her the bed and told her to climb in. “Now sleep. You know where my lab is if you need anything. But I think I might just read.” He walked out of the room to his library to pick up a book.
Snape picked up a book on ancient potions and took it back to his bedroom. Sitting on an armchair, he watched her sleeping a second before starting to read. He was fully engrossed in a potion when he heard her cry out and looked up. Her eyes were clenched shut; her hands balled into fists so tightly that her knuckles were white. She was muttering something unclearly.
Snape stood up and walked to her. “Hermione…”
“No… no.” She looked as if she was trying to get away from something she was pinned to. “No Daddy…”
Snape watched her sadly. He knew how often she must have lost this fight. He could see the blood starting to drip from her fingernails as she clenched them tighter. “Hermione, wake up.” Slowly, Snape uncurled each of her fingers and healed her palms. Hermione took a ragged breath as she woke up. Snape sat on the edge of the bed beside her. “What’s going on?”
“I just can’t get it out of my head.” Hermione sobbed into his shoulder. “Even the Dreamless Sleep Draught doesn’t work anymore. I don’t know what to do.”
Snape rocked her slightly. “Ssh. It’s okay.” He started humming a song that his own mother used to sing to him when he was younger. As he hummed, he could feel her heart rate slow and her breathing even out. She was soon fast asleep again. He laid her back down on the bed and picked his book up from his chair. Sitting back down on the bed he continued reading. She slept better that time.
Hmm. Well I guess she just needs to know that someone is with her. It’s odd that she can even stand my presence. If I was in her place I wouldn’t want any male company; especially in such a vulnerable position. Granted her mother didn’t exactly make her life any safer. I guess she doesn’t really feel safe around either gender so it’ll just come down to individual people. But why me? I definitely haven’t been nice to her in the past. Although I wish I could have been.
Hermione woke soon after Snape had finished his book on potions. As she sat up she realized he was sitting in bed with her. He laughed at her questioning look. “You were having trouble sleeping and woke up. But you fell asleep again while you were drenching my shoulders. It’s a quite unpleasant feeling you know.”
“Oh. Well, thank you sir. I really appreciate it.” Hermione looked around the room, taking it in for the first time. It was actually quite quaint. She’d imagined it would have been all Slytherin colors and snakes. The furniture was all made of ebony wood and the primary color was green. But it was all shades of green. The bed spread was a deep dark green, almost black. The carpet was plushy but the same color as the bed spread. There were two doors: one that led back into his living room and one that she assumed led into a bathroom. One wall was covered with a huge bookcase that went floor to ceiling. She smiled brightly at the sight of it. “Your rooms are beautiful sir; not at all what I expected.”
“The only reason you really like them is because of the bookcase. That’s only my light reading though. I have another library here and a bigger one at Snape Manor.”
“That’s not the only reason. I just assumed it would be Slytherin to the core with snakes everywhere. And, in reality, it’s green but still nice. What time is it anyways?”
“It’s almost dinner time.”
“Don’t you sleep anymore?”
