Chapter 10 : Playing Dirty
For the next week she seemed to float to all of her classes. She could hardly believe that she and Malfoy were officially boyfriend and girlfriend. She wore his promise ring at all times. It was Thursday and everyone was outside enjoying the newly fallen snow anticipating the winter holidays while she enjoyed herself in the library. It was her sanctuary.
“Psst…” she looked up to see that Ginny had slid into the chair next to her. “Can I talk to you?”
“Sure, what’s up?” She whispered.
“Let’s go out on the grounds.”
“Okay.” She packed her up her books and parchment and they exited. “So, what’s up, Gin?” She asked once they had reached the deserted court yard. It was quite nippy outside and she pulled her scarf tighter around her neck.
“You’re in love with him aren’t you?” She said at once.
“Huh?”
“Oh, don’t play dumb Hermione. I saw you at the ball when you danced with him. With Malfoy, I mean.”
“Umm…is it that noticeable?” She said nervously, deciding it best not to deny it.
“Well to me anyways. Harry and Ron don’t suspect a thing, but I saw the way he held you and the way you looked at him. And the way that he put his hand on your back when he asked to talk to you. It’s obvious that he loves you too. He wouldn’t have escorted you out like that if he was just a friend or acquaintance.”
“Ginny, how can you see all this?” She asked in amazement.
“Because it’s the same way I look at Madden Clup and that’s how he touches me when he’s trying to hide his feelings.”
“That Slyterin Chaser with brown hair?” She said in surprise. She nodded.
“Plus, after I saw the way you danced, I started watching him. When Parkinson sat on him he looked like he was going to hurl. And when you were dancing with Dean, I thought he was going to blow a gasket.” She giggled.
“Oh! You’re too funny Ginny.” She laughed. “But when did you start seeing Madden?”
“We started dating about a month ago, right before the match. Didn’t stop me from sending the bludger his way though.” She said with a mischievous grin. “No one knows though Hermione, so you can’t tell.”
“Of course not. We’re in the same predicament, aren’t we? She said with a relieved smile.
“Yeah I guess we are except that your boyfriend is hated by your two best friends. They don’t even know mine exists off the quidditch field. But anyways, tell me all the details! I want to hear how it all started!” Ginny squealed. Happy to have found someone to confide in, she held up her right hand to show her the ring and began gushing all the gory details starting with their meeting on the train.
“Are you serious?!?! He attacked you on the train!”
“Uh huh. But secretly, I really enjoyed it. I just couldn’t admit it to myself because I thought that he was such a pig.”
“Ohh… go on go on!” They spent the rest of the afternoon discussing their dirty little secrets, giggling all the while.
That night at dinner she and Ginny sat beaming as they piled food onto their plates. Both had agreed that it felt good that they had found someone to confide in. Hermione was very glad that Ginny would be staying during the holidays. Draco and Madden were both leaving the next day, so she and Ginny had decided that they would try to spend as much time together as possible so they wouldn’t miss them so much. “Misery loves company.” Ginny had said.
“What are you two so smiley about?” Ron asked as he looked at two large sets of pearly whites.
“Oh nothing.” Said Ginny.
“Smiles like that never mean nothing.” Harry piped up. “What are you two up to?” he asked narrowing his eyes.
“Oh, well Ginny and I are planning a huge shopping spree. We’re on a mission to acquire new wardrobes this Christmas.” Hermione lied, giving Ginny another huge smile.
“Oh. How exciting.” Ron said sarcastically through a mouthful of food.
“Well leave us out of these plans. I don’t want to carry any bags or have to tell you if you look fat in a pair of jeans. Nor do I want any evil looks when you ask for the truth and get it.” Harry quickly said with a frown.
“Don’t worry, we won’t include you, Grumpy.” Ginny giggled as both girls stuffed their faces with food to hide large amounts of incoming laughter.
“Are you studying?” Malfoy asked.
“Yeah. What does it look like?” She said looking up.
“What is there to study for?! We just finished winter exams!”
“N.E.W.T.s of course.” She said as he grumbled and walked over to her. She was sitting at the large table swiftly jotting down notes about Mandale. Her glasses began slipping down her nose and she hurriedly pushed them back up.
She was moving. He had pulled her chair back from the large desk. Leaning forward with an outstretched arm she tried to finish her sentence with no luck. He kept pulling.
“Malfoy!”
“Yes my sweet?” He said as he lifted her to a standing position. Taking her quill he tossed it onto the table then took off her glasses and disposed of them in the same fashion.
“I was trying to study.” She chided. Her hands on her hips, foot tapping she looked up at him with a frown.
“Turn that frown upside down.” He said with a grin.
“You’re the biggest pinhead I know.” She laughed. Swinging her arms around his neck, she pressed a kiss to his lips.
“Are you sure you want to stay here all Christmas?” He asked as he brushed a stray hair from her flushed face.
“Yes, then maybe I could get some real studying done.” She poked him on the shoulder. “Even if I go home for the holidays, we wouldn’t be able to see each other. Your family would never accept me and I’d be up at the snow with mine. I’m not much a skier though. I prefer snowboarding, but I decided to stay and study this holiday. Besides, Harry, Ron, and Ginny are staying with me so you don’t have to worry about me being lonely.”
“Oh great, so those scallywags can rub even more Gryffindor spirit on you?”
“Hey! They aren’t scallywags. And they don’t need to rub any spirit on me. I have enough of my own, thank you very much.” she said as she peered into his gray eyes.
“Mmm hmm…” he said as he kissed her again. “Granger, I think that I might actually miss your snide remarks.”
“Oh I know you will. Who else will make fun of you?” She grinned. “I’ll miss you too my little ferret.”
“I resent that.” He said with a smile.
“Of course you do. Why else would I call you that?” She said taking his lips once again and that was the end of their conversation.
Heading for the shower, she was dressed only in her towel. When she entered the bathroom Draco was starting a bath.
“Care to join me?” He asked over his shoulder.
“Just because we’re dating now still doesn’t mean that I want to be sitting where your privates are floating.” She said as she opened the shower door.
“Suit yourself Granger.” Turning on the water, she stepped into perfectly heated streams.
“Mmm…” she murmured to herself. The hot water felt good on her cold skin. Finishing, she wrapped the towel around herself and walked out.
“All clean?” He asked.
“Yup” she replied energetically.
“Come here a minute.” She walked over to him and he motioned for her to lean closer. Leaning over the edge she kissed him as he ran his lips down her neck. “Mmmm…you smell good, but I don’t know if you really are clean.” He said.
“Wh…?” She screamed. He had pulled her into the tub. Her face hit the water and her feet flew over her head and landed in the bubbly water with a splash. When she finally emerged from the soap filled water Malfoy was laughing hysterically. Standing, she pushed the suds away from her face she clutched the wet towel before it could fall.
“That was a cruel deceitful stunt you just pulled Malfoy!” she wagged her finger at him. He was wiping tears away from his eyes.
“Not as cruel as this.” He managed to choke out through fits of laughter as he snatched her towel away. Screaming again she dropped down to the concealing water.
“MALFOY!” She bellowed. Her voice reverberated off the tile walls. “WHAT DID YOU DO THAT FOR!” her eyes were wide with surprise.
“Damn Granger, you have the nicest body I’ve ever seen.” He said as he moved closer to her.
“Why you little…”
“Ferret?” He supplied with a huge grin. Still holding her sopping towel, he flung it across the room spraying the walls with sudsy water. Stunned, she watched her only means of cover fly helplessly across the room. Grabbing her he pulled her to him.
“Eww! No!” She squealed as he pressed himself against her. “You’re so gross!”
“Am I?”
“Yes! You are!”
“Well then” he said as he let go of her. Smirking he stood up. Her hand immediately flew to cover her eyes.
“Sit down! Sit down!”
“What? Are you embarrassed to see my masculinity?” He said a huge smile plastered to his face.
“Yes! Yes! Stop!” He had pulled her up to stand with him. Her hands shot down her body to cover herself. “MALFOY!” she roared. He whistled in return. “You degrading little twit! Let me go!” Pulling her to him he kissed her angry lips. Her arms instinctively draped over his neck before she realized that the entirety of her body was pressed up against him. Jerking away, she covered herself and fled the bathtub nearly slipping in her haste. Grabbing a new towel from the rack she ran to her room leaving Malfoy laughing.
“Oh no you don’t!” She said as she stormed back into the bathroom with her wand in her outstretched hand. “Minimzior” she said and his man hood shrunk about two sizes.
“Hey!” He yelled.
“You’re not the only who can have a good laugh Draco Malfoy.” Smirking, she turned leaving him to figure out how to repair himself.
Sitting at her vanity, she dried and straightened her hair with her wand. She had already put on gray sweatpants and a black long sleeved thermal shirt when Malfoy walked in. He had put on a pair of navy blue scrubs and bright white socks.
“Fix yourself?” She asked innocently.
“Why, yes, I did.” He said smoothly. “But you know,” rubbing her shoulders he leaned down to whisper in her ear “you would have been the one suffering from that jinx.”
“Oh, you!” She swatted at him smiling. Easily picking her up, he tossed her to the bed and crawled on himself. Covering her body with his own, she giggled and pulled him closer. “And why would I be hurt by your lack of family jewels?” She said looking deep into his gray eyes. Craning her neck up she took hold of his bottom lip and kissed it. Not satisfied by her tease, he leaned down and took a more substantial kiss from her soft pink lips. Smiling, he said “because then you wouldn’t be able to feel anything, my love.”
“Feel anything? So you presume that we will be doing anything that will be involving your little Mister? Sorry to inform you, but I’m not the type of girl that just gives it all away. I won’t be another notch cut into your bed post.”
“If I thought that you were the type of girl to throw it all away, I would have taken it a long time ago.” He said with an affronted look on his face. “Do you really think that’s how I see you? As just another mark?”
“Well I have to admit that I’ve heard the rumors.” She said quietly.
“Hermione, you are my everything. I would have thought that the ring would have been a proclamation of my love.” He said as he ran his hand over her smooth cheek. “Besides,” he said with a grin “I have a new bed post this year.”
“You’re such a goof.” She said pulling him to her. Holding him to her she whispered into his ear “I’m sorry I ever doubted you.”
“No worries. I can understand your concern.” And he rolled off her. He stood to turn off the lights. Pulling back the covers they both slid into the enormous bed. He wrapped his arms around her and they slept one last pre-Christmas night together.
Hugging him furiously, she didn’t want to let him go.
“It’s only three weeks, Granger.” She heard him murmur. Looking up at his face, she could see the lines of sadness etching themselves on to his smooth skin.
“I know, but that still doesn’t mean that I want to let you go.” She said with a small smile.
“You’re such a girl sometimes, I swear.” He teased as he pulled her to him. Smothering her lips with his, she felt herself lean into him.
“Well I’d hope you’d want me to be a girl. Other wise I’d really would have to tell people you swing the other way.” She joked.
“You little minx.” Kissing her again she felt him smile under her lips. Reluctantly pulling away he gave her one last kiss. “I have to go now, other wise I’ll miss the train.”
“I’ll walk you down.”
Silently they walked down to the entrance hall. Trying to be as inconspicuous as the could, they walked with a decent amount of space between them. Most everyone had already left. There were a few stragglers who were running out of the hall towards Hogsmead Station. With a small smile she watched as he descended the steps. Taking a deep breath, she turned around and started walking away. Hearing hurried foot steps behind her she turned to investigate. Malfoy was rushing back towards her.
“What’s wrong?” She asked as he held her by the shoulders. Looking around to see if anyone was watching, he leaned down and stole a kiss from her and turned to run back down the stone steps. She could hear Professor McGonagall reprimanding him for not being on time.
“And your Head boy for goodness sake! I don’t know what Dumbledore was thinking.” She said in an irritated voice. Giggling, Hermione walked back into the empty castle.
“Psst…” she looked up to see that Ginny had slid into the chair next to her. “Can I talk to you?”
