A Christmas Surprise
Author's Notes: This chapter includes a special performance of Savage Garden's Truly Madly Deeply.
Hunter didn't return to classes at all that week. He assured Professor McGonagall that he would resume his regular schedule, including detentions, with the other students after the holidays. He spent his days in the Gryffindor Common Room writing and playing his songs and his nights working on his schoolwork.
He and Katie had spent her free periods during the day in his room talking and taking the time to actually get to know each other. They found that they had lot of things in common and that their differences weren't that different.
Katie admitted that she liked horror movies that were so far beyond even the Wizarding world's definition of reality that there was no chance of it ever happening. "The gorier the better," she told him.
Hunter said that he liked the psychological thrillers better. "I prefer something that makes you think as oppose to something that grosses you out."
They had similar tastes in music but while Katie loved wizards’ music Hunter still prefered his Muggle Rock. "To me if it doesn't have a strong lead guitar, good rifts and a descent drummer providing the back beat it's not really music."
That conversation had sparked Katie's musical education and Hunter began teaching her how to play the guitar. And smiled at how determined she was to master the instrument.
She was no Carlos Santana or any of the other guitar legends he had taught her about during her lessons but she had learned the basics and even a few of the easier songs he had taught by the time Christmas Eve had rolled around.
Katie had been working on his Christmas present in secret from the moment he had started to teach her to play his guitar. And now it was finally ready.
She had asked Hermione to help her since the young muggle born witch was the only one she knew, other then Hunter, who even listened to muggle music.
Hermione didn't know much American Rock music but she knew of one song that she thought would be perfect for what Katie had been planning. After sending an owl to her parents for help she received a CD by return owl.
Since everyone else had gone home for the Holidays she and Hunter had the entire tower to themselves. and had spent their time in the common room together, except when they each had something private that they needed to do.
On Christmas morning Katie got out of bed and put on her slippers and night robe. She looked around her room excepting to find the presents her friends were supposed to have sent but found nothing. What's going on?
She left her empty room and headed downstairs to the common room and froze in her tracks at the bottom of the stairs at the site before her.
The common room had been completely redecorated for the Holiday and standing in the center of the room was a large Christmas tree complete with presents. Almost all of the furniture had been removed and only a couch, table and a couple of chairs remained.
The couch was placed in front of the fireplace and the chairs were at either end of the table. The table had been set for two and had smelled like a delicious Christmas Breakfast waiting on it.
"Merry Christmas," Hunter said walking over to her. He was carrying two mugs of hot-coco and handed one of them to her.
His appearance caused to blush as she accepted the drink and looked away. The only thing he was wearing was an old pair of faded jeans.
He smiles at her reaction and leads her over towards the Christmas tree. "I suppose you want your presents."
Her face lights up and in that moment it's as if she's a little girl all over again. He laughs at her as she sits on the floor waiting for him to hand over her presents.
After all the presents have been opened Katie's face is still beaming. She received a new sweater and matching skirt from Angela and Alicia, a skiving box from Fred and George, assorted candies and other sweets from Harry, Ron and Hermione and a the latest Screaming Sisters Album from her parents.
Hunter's pile was far smaller then hers. He had received the same assortment of candy from the trio supplemented by the twins and nothing else. The thing was that he'd been surprised to receive anything at all.
"You've still got two more gifts." He tells her as he gets up and walks behind the couch. Katie's eyes widen as she watches him pull two decent size packages.
She bounces up and down as he brings the gifts over to her. Her eyes become as wide as saucers as she opens his presents. One of them was a brand new guitar complete with case and pick. The other is a biker jacket in her size. She can't stop herself from crying as she gives him a hug. "I love them." And you.
"I'm glad," Hunter said with a smile. "It wasn't easy arranging everything but it was fun hiding it from you." Katie stuck her tongue out at him as they both began laughing.
"I've got a surprise for you too." She said as she picked up her new guitar and check to make sure it was in tune. She wasn't surprised to find it tuned perfectly. He's meticulous about the maintenance of his guitar.
As she begins to play, Hunter smiles and sits back to enjoy the show.

Katie closes her eyes and can feel the power of the music flow over her and knows how true the words are. She is falling for Hunter and this song is her way of expressing those feelings.

As she finishes playing he gets up and walks over to her. Taking the guitar, he gently sets it down beside her before taking her into his arms. No words are spoken as he captures her mouth with his and kisses her deeply. His previous two kisses had been goodbye, this kiss however was far more passionate then they had been.
As Katie deepened the kiss, she could feel the passion behind it but also so much more. He was asking for help and offering to allow her in. But more then that he was willingly taking a chance at finding out where this relation would go.
Author's Notes: There's one more chapter to go before Hunter makes his "official" return to Hogwarts and faces the rest of the school again. What will happen once he gets back to class? How will the others react when they find out about Hunter and Katie? Are Hunter's problems really over or is this just the calm before the storm? What does the future hold for the new couple?
