Dark Mark

Chapter Ten: If all our misfortunes were laid in one common heap whence everyone must take an equal portion, most people would be contented to take their own and depart. --Socrates

End of fall term was already upon them. Harry had elected to stay at Hogwarts over the Christmas holidays. His Godfather Sirus Black and Remus Lupin had promised to visit. It was to be his first Christmas ever with the remnants of his family who actually loved him, Harry, just Harry.

Plus Nocturnus had promised to give him extra training in defence against the Dark Arts saying that he needed it being such a trouble magnet. Harry was inclined to agree he never had to find trouble it somehow always found him.

Severus was requested to the Headmasters office, which was really just a nice way of saying summoned. Albus always asked nicely. Snape had been brooding himself in the dungeons since his fortuitous escape from the Mediward with no inclination to associate with anyone. Even the house elves that brought his meals and cleaned his quarters were walking on eggshells.

He positively thundered down the passageways to Dumbledores office, glowered at the guardian Gargoyle who glowered right back. Finally he threatened the Gargoyle with bodily harm muttered “fairy floss” and fumed his way up the stairwell.

The door was gently opened before he had the time to crash through, which was most disappointing. So he settled instead for throwing himself into the closest chair and glared angrily at the floor as if he could stare a hole through it.

“Lemon Drop?” Severus ignored the offer with ice around the edges. “Lemon Drop?” Severus snarled at the floor “What in the name of Merlins Grimoire did you call me here for, and DON’T say Lemon Drop.” “For me” Came a silken voice.

Until that moment Severus thought they were alone. He scowled at Nocturnus “If that is it I am leaving now.” He made to get up but found he was unable to move “YOU WILL RELEASE ME NOW” he bellowed and his look shot daggers at both men.

“Severus, please hear me out. I have supped with Emperors, fought with Kings, danced with Angels and argued with the Devil himself but I have never begged for anything, until now.” In the stunned and sceptical silence that followed Nocturnus continued. ‘If you want when I have finished you may request ‘Obliterate’ but for now . . .”

You were named after Lucius Septimius Severus, hence you are Severus Septimius Lucius and Snape was her husbands’ last name. Together they were a perfect couple but after many blissful years they desired a family. It was profoundly heartbreaking for them to discover that they were unable to have children. **Severus glared volumes through hooded eyes.**

“My ‘fame’ proceeded me and with the right invocation I became the answer to their dreams. How could I resist such an honourable offer? Hair as black as a ravens wing, skin as white as pure cream, eyes as dark as ebony.”

“I didn’t have the heart to tell her that Severus was Latin for Grumpy,” **vaguely translated that is** “besides it has a nice ring to it. After all.” He smiled. Severus scowled at the revelation. “What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet.” **Does this man have no sense of humour? Sigh**

“About 3540 BC two hundred angels lusted after the comely yet mortal daughters of man. They wanted chose wives and families. They knew it was a sin and they swore an oath to bare any penalty for such a great sin together.”

“They taught mankind charms and enchantment’s, acquainted man with the use of plants. Together they made known the metals of the earth and how to work them, taught men how to use swords, knives, shields and breastplates.”

“Humankind learnt to create bracelets and ornaments, the use of antimony, all kinds of costly stones, colouring tinctures and the cosmetics. We revealed eternal secrets formally safeguarded by Heaven and I taught sorcery”

“The other beloved Seraphim looked down upon the earth and were greatly distraught. They called the Lords attention to the lawlessness, proclaiming that we had defiled mankind and ourselves.”

“We were cast out of Heaven and bound to the torment of Hell. The two hundred fallen became the minor Gods, Goddesses, Deities and even Demons, Unseelie, Faerie and Immortals.” **A little inaccuracy sometimes saves a ton of explanation**

Severus rolled his eyes “You have obviously never heard of Readers Digest.” He glared. “I take it you’ve finished or is this only intermission?” He growled “Can I go now?” Samyaza wearily waved his hand and Severus was released.

“I shall be returning to my dungeons.” he snarled and stood brushing down his clothes of invisible lint “I have work to do and lessons to prepare”, He narrowed his eyes and gave his magnum stare “Good day gentlemen.” He spat.

Before he could make the door a hand caught his left forearm. “Son you are a very special man. Your ancestry makes you a wizard of immense power. I have great faith in you and what you can be. I have not been there in the past but I am here now.”

Severus’ arm was burning under the fierce grip, but he refused to acknowledge it. Eyes locked unblinking with Nocturnus’. “Severus I am no innocent either, forgive yourself we have all sinned not even angels are perfect.”

Severus flinched and yanked his arm away. “Sell crazy somewhere else, we’re all stocked up here.” He stormed from the room this time he had the opportunity to slam the door and did with gusto. All of Hogwarts shook with the result.

Dumbledore gazed sagely over his glasses at Nocturnus who had sunk boneless into the vacated chair. “You’re not being entirely forthright are you?” Samyaza looked into the twinkling blue eyes and opened the floodgates words tinged in despair.

“The entity this world calls their God had the fallen angels bound up and helpless he made us watch by way of punishment whilst our children our ‘indiscretions’ were slaughtered. No parent should ever bury his or her child.”

“My heart was cleft in twain. That my own flesh and blood should die however indirectly by my own hand is unforgivable and a great burden to carry. The Earth was flooded to cleanse it of our ‘corruption’. Of course to have an ark built Noah needed to know everything we had been teaching anyway just to survive. The pot calling the kettle black.”

“He has ‘mellowed’ somewhat since then. Was not Gods’ own son born of mortal woman? Many Fallen Angels have married hence the advent of the Muggle born. So you see yet another reason why Voldemort can not be allowed to carry out his misguided plans.

Whilst Severus’ parents lived I could not in all good faith have interfered, I gave them my word, but they and their time is gone. I am not. Severus is my child.”

Dumbledore stared “You and your son are more alike than you would readily admit. You both walk around as if the weight of the world is on your shoulders and have massive signs on your backs that say KICK ME. I assure you there are not”.

Dumbledore walked around his desk and opened the office door. “Are you always this obtuse or is today a special occasion?”

In the dungeons of Hogwarts safely ensconced in the privacy of his quarters and armed with Hagrids best fire whisky, Severus proceeded to sulk his way to the bottom of the bottle. He brushed up his sleeve to swear at the object of his disdain and discovered that the Dark Mark he had bore for the last twenty odd years was gone.

The flesh of his left forearm was unmarred. He gazed at it in wonder, caressed its perfect surface and wept as if his heart would break.

From nowhere sweet strong warm arms held him close. Through the haze he heard a honeyed voice “Don’t let your past dictate who you are but let it be a part of who you will be. You are my heart made whole. My son my love my life.”
