Chapter 10 Meet DJ
It took a little bit for all of the arrangements to be made but at least Hermione was still on maternity leave so she didn't have to worry about work. It was decided that she and Jess would take the baby to Boston and stay for a week so Jess could see the sights, as well as in the hopes that Draco would want to have something to do with his child.
And so Hermione Granger found herself outside an office labeled "Ludicrous Patents" with the name Jared Hansen underneath. Jess and the baby were in another corridor awaiting Hermione's signal to come over. Hermione had booked herself an appointment for a patent under an assumed alias, being sure to get the last appointment of the day.
When he came out of his office to usher her in, he was completely shocked at the woman standing in front of him. It was obviously Hermione Granger, though she had the same face as the woman he had fallen in love with a year ago. Her hair was back to her natural brown, but it wasn't the least bit frizzy and her eyes were back to themselves as well. Her body looked slightly heavier than when he had last seen her, particularly around the middle, but she still looked stunning in the green baby doll dress she was wearing.
"I take it that you're Miss Erika Estrada?"
"Yes." She looked into his face, trying to gauge his reaction to seeing her. She had half been expecting him to kick her out but she knew that as Jared Hansen he shouldn't know what Hermione Granger looked like and he would have to usher her into his office and try to keep it to the subject at hand.
"I don't have that much time at the moment, Miss Estrada, so let's see what I can do for you."
He held the door open, and as she passed by him he heard her whisper, "I don't need much time, Draco." He turned away from her as he closed the door for the brief second that his inner panicking made it to the fore.
A couple seconds later when he regained his Malfoy composure he walked over and seated himself behind his desk with her in a chair on the other side. He decided to try and ignore the situation. "So, Miss Estrada, what is it that you feel you need a patent for?"
"Draco Malfoy, you know that I am not here for a patent. I am here because I need to talk to you."
"I'm sorry, but who is Draco Malfoy? And if you're not here for a patent I must ask you to leave." Just her being there ripped open all the wounds in his heart that had just recently started healing and he wanted her gone. She had left him. She had no right to be here. How did she find out his real identity anyway, not that it mattered because he wan't going to admit to it.
He could see in her face that she was becoming angry. He was almost tempted to stop his charade knowing what could happen when she got mad. Almost. Instead he got up and walked to the door and opened it. "Now if you could please leave, Miss Estrada, as I said I don't have much time and if you're not looking for a patent then there's really no reason for you to be here."
Hermione glared at him. She did not rise from the chair in which she was seated but instead put her wand to a necklace that she was wearing and whispered a spell. Not ten seconds later Jess was at the door with the baby. Hermione walked over and took the little boy out of her friends arms with a whispered thank you before Jess left the room again closing the door behind her.
Draco was staring at the child that was so obviously his. No wonder she had figured him out. She held the baby close to her, but turned him so that Draco could look at him properly. "Draco, I would like for you to meet Jared Daconis Granger." She had legally added in the middle name when she knew for sure that Draco really was Jared.
He looked at the tiny child with awe before he turned a cold eye to the mother. "Why didn't you tell me?" he demanded.
Hermione was taken aback. "I did. I wrote to you seven times but you never answered. I just thought that you hated me so much for deceiving you that you didn't want anything to do with our child."
"No, I hated you so much for deceiving me that I burned every letter you sent before opening them." He sat back down into his chair, both in frustration as well as he was becoming quite light headed with the shock of the news. He had always wanted a child but since he didn't feel he could tell anyone the truth about himself he didn't think it was a possibility. "Can I hold him?" he asked softly.
"Sure," she replied. She walked over to where Draco was sitting, rubbing her hand in circles on the baby's back. As she put him into Draco's arms, correcting his hold, she spoke to her son. "DJ, meet your daddy."
"DJ?"
"Yeah, I didn't want to call him Jared all the time and I just don't like the way JD sounds."
As Draco was staring at his son he spoke to Hermione. "We still have a lot to talk about."
"I know," she sighed.
As Draco left the topic and started cooing at his baby boy the door to his office swung open as a pretty petite blonde entered the room, obviously ready to go out somewhere. "Jared, hon, we need to get going so we're not la-"
Hermione was surprised that the woman was able to get to the end of her sentance before noticing that her date was holding a baby and that there was another woman in the room. Draco looked decidedly uncomfortable and Hermione thought she'd be nice and intervene. She walked over to his desk and picked up one of his quills, rummaging around for a blank piece of parchment.
"This is where we're staying. We'll be in Boston for the rest of the week. This is my home address and this is the number of my mobile. Feel free to get in touch with me anytime." She left the parchment with her contact information in front of him and went over to his side to pick up DJ. As she took the child she whispered, "I love you, Draco Malfoy." She knew that it was a risk to say her feelings aloud to him but the mere presence of the other woman had upped the ante. She didn't look at his face to see what effect the words had on him.
As she left the room she smiled to the blonde who in turn gave her a weak smile back, but her eyes were completely cold. As Hermione shut the door behind her, she heard the woman speak. "Jared, who is that and why were you holding her child?"
