Chapter 11
Chapter 11
It was the first Double Potions class Hermione had with Severus since their two dates and she was a little nervous, but not nearly as nervous as he was. The students were seated when he stormed in, scowling at everyone, but did not look at her. Without wasting time, he began lecturing about the properties of a new potion. His voice was smooth as silk, words gracefully flowing from his mouth as he held everyone’s undivided attention.
Hermione admired the power he held over the class, respecting his passion for potions and appreciating the knowledge he provided them with. She was intrigued how this man who was feared by some and respected by others could be so insecure when being around her. Her eyes followed him as he glided through the rows. She wanted to learn more about this mysterious creature.
All the time the students were brewing their potion, Snape didn’t once check on Hermione’s potions and she did notice this. She had always been the first one he would go to, hoping to ridicule her in front of the class, but was rarely given that opportunity. Hermione raised her hand, wanting to draw his attention to her. She wanted his approval on her potion. Holding her hand up for several minutes, he finally acknowledged her even though he had clearly seen her hand five minutes ago.
Approaching her from the back of the classroom, he leaned over her shoulder to examine her potion when she turned to him and whispered, “I miss you.”
His knees buckled and he grabbed her chair for support. Quickly he stood up and walked away. Hermione smiled, realizing the power she held over him. She did not want him to be nervous around her; in fact, she realized the only time he did talk to her without being nervous was when she was annoying him. Her eyes continued to follow him around the room, noticing his concentration was not as sharp as usual as he kept glancing back at her. This gave her an idea.
Hermione added a few ingredients to her potion that both neutralized it and tripled its volume. With a wave of her wand, she knocked her cauldron over seeing a flood of orange liquid flowing down the steps to the front row. The girls screamed and everyone jumped on their chairs.
“What’s going on?” Snape hissed, looking at the back row.
“Surf’s up, Sir!” said Hermione as she winked at him. Harry and Ron wore big grins, realizing the *game* was on again.
“Miss Granger,” he hissed, “I will speak to you after class!”
‘That’s more like it,’ she thought. Class ended and the students filed out. Hermione walked to the front of the classroom and stood in front of Severus’ desk. He stared at the door, waiting for the last student to leave before he spoke.
“Hermione,” his voice was gentle, but nervous, “Why did you do that?”
“Severus,” she began as she walked around the desk to be closer to him, “I noticed that you are nervous when I get too close to you.” He unconsciously backed up in his chair when she stepped closer. “If we are going to date, then you need to get used to me being this close,” she whispered, leaning into him so their faces were inches apart.
He slid his chair back from her so it was on the edge of the step. “But that doesn’t explain why you spilled your potion.”
“The only time you have spoken to me without being nervous is when I was tormenting you - ”
“You mean blackmailing me,” his voice had more confidence now.
“Exact she she agreed, “I am not wanting to blackmail you now, but I do want you to talk to me without running away.” She stood up tall and towered over him.
She had his attention. “And exactly how do you plan on accomplishing this?” his voice was harsher.
She lowered herself back down to his face and whispered, “I am going to torment you again.” He pulled back from her quickly but that was an unfortunate movement. His chair toppled backward, taking him with it. Biting her bottom lip and blushing, Hermione grabbed her book bag and started to leave.
“Hello Miss Granger,” said Albus who was standing in the doorway, “How are you today?”
“Absolutely wonderful!” she chirped, leaving the potion’s classroom. Severus was crawling out of the chair and getting to his feet, giving Albus an icy glare.
“Never underestimate the power of a woman. I’ve never really understood that Muggle expression,” chuckled Albus, “until now.”
“I don’t want to hear it old man,” hissed Severus who was dusting himself off, leaving his own classroom.
Severus stormed to his room, not kng whg what to think. It was bad enough that he could barely breath when she was around and now she was going to torment him again. Grabbing his bottle of whiskey, he poured himself a shot and drank it. He poured himself another drink and sat down in his chair, thinking about what she had said.
After a few drinks, he finally realized that she d nod not be doing this if his attraction to her were not mutual. He thought about this while taking his fourth glass of whiskey, finally feeling more relaxed.

Hermione was back in the Gryffindor common room with Harry and Ron who were very excited to hear about the latest game.
“So Hermione, what’s next?” asked Ron. His eyes were lit up in anticipation.
“I need to do this on my own Ron,” she said, knowing he was going to be mad.
“What?” asked Harry, “Come on Hermione, after everything we have done for you, you can’t leave us out now!”
“I’m sorry Harry. I just have to do this by myself,” she repeated, “Please try to understand.”
He was getting ready to protest when Ron grabbed him by the arm. “It’s okay Hermione. We understand,” he said, looking intently at Harry, winking at him, “Don’t we Harry?” Harry understood the hidden meaning.
“Uh, sure Hermione. We’ll let you do alo alone,” he said hesitantly.
“Thanks guys! You are the best!” she said, giving each of them a hug before leaving for her room.
“Okay Ron, what do you have planned?”
“We are going to have our own fun with Hermione and Snape,” grinned Ron. “When I went back to the potion’s classroom to get my book, I saw Hermione standing close enough to Snape that I thought she was going to kiss him.”
“What?” exclaimed Harry, “What did Snape do?”
“Well, it was difficult to see, but he looked really nervous. More nervous than I have ever seen him before.”
“Do you think she likes him?” Harry asked.
“She must! Why else would she tease and torment him, but I am not sure if he likes her. She did spe lot lot of time in detention with him before Christmas and maybe something - ” they both looked at each other.
“Eww!” they both said.
“We need to observe them tonight at dinner and see if there is anything going on between them,” said Ron, “If there is, we can use it to our advantage to have fun with the both of them.”
“Hermione will kill us Ron.”
“Nah, she’ll just be mad for a while, but she’ll get over it,” said Ron.
~*~*~*~*~
During dinner, Ron and Harry kept a close eye on Hermione and Snape. They were shocked to see Snape staring at her, but they also noticed him quickly looking away whenever she looked back at him. Ron gave Harry a wink and nodded with a sly grin.
“This is going to be so much fun,” he muttered.

Double Potion’s Class:
Snape was in a peculiar mood today. Harry and Ron couldn’t tell if he was mad or edgy as he kept glancing at Hermione.
“Hand in your reports so we can get started,” he growled. Ron stood up immediately and collected Harry and Hermione’s reports along with his.
“You are quite the gentleman today, thank you Ron,” chirped Hermione. Ron held her report out to Harry as he b dow down to her.
“Anything for my lady,” he chuckled, distracting her while Harry placed a quick charm on her report.
“WEASLEY! Turn in the homework now!” moaned Snape who did not want to put up with any crap from anyone today. He had enough on his mind trying to anticipate Hermione’s next move.
Snape began lecturing on today’s potion when Hedwig flew in and dropped a scroll into his hands. He looked at the scroll, and then looked at Hermione. She shrugged her shoulders trying to tell him she did not know what it was. He carefully unrolled it, realizing it was a quiz from one of those girlish teenage-magazines that had been filled out.

He glared at Hermione and put the scroll in his pocket. He couldn’t believe that she had filled out a survey on him. Harry and Ron were silently giggling.
Draco was observing what was going on, noticing Snape silently accusing Hermione. But yet, he did not take points away or give her detention.
Continuing the lecture, he stated the different properties when combining Armadillo Bile and Gillyweed.
“If not brewed properly, Armadillo Bile and Gillyweed can be lethal,” he indicated in an also lethal voice.
“Are you sure about that sir?” asked Ron. The class turned to look at Ron in disbelief. If it had been Hermione asking, they would have been smiling anxiously, but with Ron, they did not know what to expect.
“Are you questioning me Mister Weasley?” reputed Snape.
“Yes sir. I just want to make sure that you are sure,” smiled Ron, “Let’s face it. Everyday you fill our heads with information and I just wanted to make sure that you were sure about the facts, because - ”
“SILENCE! You will have plenty of time to research today’s lecture during detention tonight Mister Weasley,” he spat.
“Yes sir,” answered Ron in a small voice. Hermione gave him an icy look, but from where Snape was standing, he could only see the back of her head and assumed she was congratulating him.
When the class was brewing their potions, Snape approached Hermione from behind and leaned over her to observe her potion.
“You will have to do much better than that Hermione,” he whispered. Her body shivered, hearing his silky voice in her ear and she turned to whisper in his ear.
“Are you ticklish Severus? And don’t lie to me, I will find out.”
‘Oh damn!’ The thought of her hands all over his body made the bulge in his pants harden. He stood up, closed his robes and went to sit behind his desk, because he wasn’t going to walk around the class with an erection.
Hermione noticed he left quickly, but did not realize how she made his body react. She glanced up at him every few minutes while brewing her potion and smiled at him. This just made the whole situation more agonizing for him as he shifted in his chair, trying to find a more comfortable, yet appropriate position.
Draco couldn’t help but notice Snape quickly retreat to his desk after talking with Hermione. It was the first time the students brewed a potion while Snape stayed behind his desk instead of stalking around the room. He knew something was going on between Snape and Granger and he wanted to join in on the fun Ron and Harry were having.
“Sir!” Draco disrupted the silence in class.
“What?” Snape hissed, still sitting behind the desk.
“I couldn’t help but notice your appearance has been more appeasing to our eyes,” Draco commented.
“What do you want Malfoy?”
“Well, the only reason a man of your status would improve his appearance after all this time would be for a woman.” The class muffled their giggles and gags. Snape stared at him, speechless.
“Sir,” continued Draco, “Do you have a girlfriend?”
The gods had mercy on him, because the bell rang before he could answer.
“OUT!” he yelled. As the students filed out of the classroom, Draco cautiously approached the stack of reports they had handed in and murmured a charm on Hermione’s report. Snape did not notice because he was too busy watching Hermione who approaching his desk. Draco quickly left by the time Hermione reached the front of the classroom.
“What do you want Hermione?” he hissed.
“You didn’t answer the question,” she replied.
“What question?” thinking she was referring to Draco’s question.
“Are you ticklish?” she said as her eyes devoured him. ‘Oh gods,’ he thought as his body melted at the way she was looking at him while another part hardened again. Not trusting his voice, he couldn’t answer. She sensed this so she asked another question.
“Severus, what did Hedwig bring - ” she looked closer at him, “Are you blushing?”
“No!” he snapped, “What did you ask?”
“I want to know what Hedwig brought you?”
“Hedwig?”
“Harry’s owl.”
“Oh,” he said, reaching into his pocket. The sooner he answered her questions, the sooner she would leave. “He -”
“She.”
“She brought me this.” He handed it over to Hermione who immediately opened and read it. She couldn’t help grinning at what she read.
“What’s so funny?”
“They marked your libido as being an animal,” she blushed.
“So you know who sent this?” he growled.
“Harry and Ron.”
Not surprised. “Don’t you have class to go to?” he quavered.
“No, this is my last class of the day,” she smiled. As long as she was there, he was not able to regain control of his body.
“Hermione, will you do me a favor?”
“Sure.”
“Can you find all the information you can get on Phoenix Tears?” his voice was strained, “As soon as possible.”
“I will do it rinow!now!” she chirped and ran out of the door. Snape collapsed on his desk, relieved that she had finally left. “What the hell is wrong with me? I’m acting like an adolescent idiot!”
Hermione spent the next few hours in the library, researching Phoenix Tears, finding out everything she could get her hands on. She loved that Severus had trusted her enough to do his research for him.
~*~*~*~*~
At dinner, Hermione sat next to Ron and Harry, eyeing them, she finally asked.
“What did you send to Professor Snape in class today?”
“We didn’t send anyth -” began Ron.
“Cut the crap! I know that Hedwig would not deliver for anyone except us!” she snapped at him.
“We just sent -well- something,” said Harry, not offering any more information. They finished their dinner and left, but Hermione stayed a little longer, glancing up at the High Table. Severus was not there, but he had missed dinner before, so she didn’t think twice about it. Instead, she headed back to the library to continue her research on Phoenix Tears and to complete her homework.
