Part 9 ..... Its all about Heart
Dawn hoped everyone would calm down soon. Ever since Rayne had brought Harry back to the chamber chaos had ruled. Willow and Xander were yelling at Rayne who turned out to be the Ethan Rayne that had cause so much trouble back home for her sister and her friends. Hermione and Ron were having a whispered argument in the corner that was getting more heated by the minute.
Spike was holding Xander back from trying to rip Rayne apart with his bare hands. Mr. Wesley Price and his young friend, Connor, were trying to reason with Willow not to use her magic against Rayne. The blond named Draco was blaming himself for not saving Harry while a very grim looking man with dark penetrating eyes alternated sending death glares at the yelling group and trying to convince Draco that there had been nothing anyone could have done.
Rayne was slowly inching his way away from the yelling and toward Harry with a worried look on his face. The demon named Loran seemed the only one with a cool head as he silently walked over to the side of the room with a potions lab and began looking through labeled vials.
Losing her temper, Dawn shouted over the den, "I wish all of you would just grow up."
Harry needed medical attention and they weren't doing anything about it. She had never been very good around sick people, though Dawn had tried to be when her mother had been ill & dying. Bitting her lip she looked over at the handsome young man resting on the bed. He looked so helpless, almost lifeless. Sadly, from what she had heard he'd almost died a moment ago.
Making up her mind, Dawn strode over to join Loran at the potions lab. In stead of asking what he was looking for or offering to help, which had been her first inclination, the teen grabbed a tray from under the sink and got out what looked like a washcloth off of one of the shelves to her left. She picked up a large bowl out of a cabinet along with a goblet and set them down on the tray. Finding a empty pitcher she filled it with cool water from the faucet and then put some more water in the bowl.
Picking up the tray carefully, Dawn made her way over to the bedside table while ignoring everyone and set her burden down. Dawn remembered how much it seemed to make her mom feel a little better when she had dabbed lightly at her mother's face with a cool wash and she was hoping it would help now. Dipping the washcloth in the bowl then wringing it out, Dawn sat on the bed and carefully began to dab the cloth against the flushed skin.
Dawn repeated the process two or three times before she noticed the room was quiet. Looking up she saw the others staring at her and it made her nervous. She licked at her lips and said, "I don't know what else to do for him."
Ducking her head down and blushing, she went back to dabbing softly at the young man's face and neck while trying to hide her embarrassment. When a shadow fell across the bed, she looked up again to look into Rayne's face and found no censor in his eyes.
"You're doing exactly what needs to be done, thank you." Rayne told her softly as he stood on the other side of Harry. "Mind helping me get his shirt off so we can see what the damage is?"
Nodding, Dawn set the washrag in the bowl and pulled the sheets down as Rayne lifted Harry so he was sitting up. They worked quickly without a word as they stripped off Harry's shirt and settled him back onto the bed. Dawn's breath caught in her throat at the sight before her. Rayne softly cursed in a language she didn't understand but she couldn't have agreed more with the sentiment. Harry's chest was covered in blisters and burns, in a few areas there were open wounds that bleed, and in others scorch marks. Dawn wanted to cry.
Without thinking she looked away to pull herself together and picked up that cloth once more, wringing it out. With a shaking hand, Dawn slowly turned back and began swabbing the injured areas. Another wet washcloth joined hers and she looked up to see Loran had brought over another cloth along with the vials he had been searching for. The green demon had brought a couple of jars that looked like healing salves as well. Rayne was now using the other washrag to help remove the worst of the bloody mess before them.
~~~~~~~~
After what felt like hours but Rayne knew was only minutes, Harry's chest was finally clean. With the bleeding stopped, and all but the worst of the burns were completely healed, Rayne bandaged up the few places that would take a bit to get better and sighed. He was worried about Harry. It didn't bode well the kid was still unconscious but at least he was still breathing. The halfling guessed he should be happy for that if nothing else right now.
He wasn't, though.
Somewhere along the way Rayne had become attached to the Boy Who Lived. Harry was street smart, funny, mischievous, and wrecked havoc where ever he went. Rayne kind of admired the kid who'd been given nothing except pain all his life but gave all he had for those who didn't even know him. In the short time they had known each other, Harry had become the son Ethan Rayne had never had but secretly wanted.
Toeing off his shoes, Rayne got into bed with Harry and pulled the prone body to him. He knew the others wanted answers but the half demon just didn't care. *Let Hermione and Ron field the questions for now* Rayne thought. Harry needed him and that was all that mattered at the moment.
Rayne could feel his mate towering over him without even looking .
A cold emotionless voice hissed at him. "What are you?"
"Worried." as all he could say right then.
Dark eyes glared at him but Rayne was immune. "I promise you that we'll talk about what ever you want later, but for now just leave it be." When it looked as if Severus might argue he added. "Please."
Something in his tone must have finally broken through to his mate's mind, as Severus's demeanor changed. "I'll hold you to that."
They stayed like that until Harry showed his first signs of being aware when he snuggled in a little deeper into Rayne's embrace. It wasn't much but it gave the chaos demon hope.
"I'm missing something, Severus. It's right in front of me. I know it is but I just can't bloody well nail down the answer to all of this." His worried eyes looking up at the man who was now sitting beside him on the bed. "We were damn lucky this time but the next one will kill him."
"Can't we just remove the core now?" Severus asked. "Surely, with the power depleted now is the perfect time to try."
"We've already tried that and Harry almost died. Truth be told, the core is now as much apart of Harry as his own magic. Even if we do get it out of him, chances are he'll end up a squib as the bloody effin thing has now linked itself to his life magic." looking Severus straight in the eye, Rayne whispered, "If it had been any other place but the heart, this wouldn't be an issue.
"But it's his heart. The seat of a wizard's magic." Severus finally understood what Ethan was saying and dread filled his stomach. "Your going to call upon the elements to disrupt the connection between the two!"
Ethan Rayne looked at his mate sadly but didn't answer. He didn't have to. He could tell that Severus understood fully now just how much trouble young Harry Potter was in.
