"Will you meet me for lunch at The Leaky Cauldron?"

"Certainly, what time?" Harry asked. Hermione told him noon, then returned to her work. The Floo connection ended, and Harry backed away from his fireplace. He turned back to Lupin, who sat stiffly at the end of his couch, tapping erratically on the arm. "Sorry," Harry said. "What were you saying?"

"Lawson has agreed to help you draw up a formal, magically binding contract with Malfoy. Moody thinks that this… informal agreement that you two have going is too unstable. He wants to make certain that Malfoy won't try to sneak his father out of the United States and turn you over to his Death Eater pals. Both of you are too valuable."

"So the information was good, then?"

"Better than good," Lupin said. "It led us to Mordred's Star…. Do you know what that is?" Harry shook his head. "It was invented by Mordred the Unending. If you put it on your wand, it multiplies and intensifies your spells. It's especially handy in battle for casting the Killing Curse."

"The Killing Curse," Harry repeated. "So it's like a bomb; kill as many as you can in one go?"

"Yes," said Lupin.

"And, what? You want me to use it?"

"Well," Lupin responded carefully, "not if you refuse. But think of it this way. If we have it, then Voldemort doesn't. We'll have to come up with a suitable place to hide it, of course, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it."

The conversation continued from there, but Harry's train of thought didn't. One thought kept circulating in his mind...: if Voldemort had it, he wouldn't hesitate to use it on us.
