One conversation that has many repercussions

On hearing Remus’s voice, Hermione pulled away from Snape and stood up quickly.
“I need to go!” she cried out, pulling out of his arms. Before he could grab her and pull her back, she was gone.
“Shit!” he hissed, as Hermione disappeared out of the portrait.
Remus was pacing in the corridor as Hermione emerged from the portrait. He stopped and looked at her, before approaching her and attempting to hug her. Hermione said nothing but stepped away from him. He stopped and his hands dropped to his sides.
“Hermione, I didn’t mean to hurt you,” he said to her, “I don’t expect you to come back to me now, but I want you to know that I never meant to hurt you.” She could see the tears in his eyes. “I would never want to hurt you.”
“But you did,” she whispered, “You gave me concussion.” Remus could not stop himself; he drew close to her and looked at the side of her head. “Severus healed me.” He nodded and gently cupped her face in his hands, before kissing her forehead. Hermione pulled away and ran her hand down his cheek.
“Let me prove that I trust you,” he whispered, before going to the painting of Salazar, “Could you please fetch your master,” he said to the portrait. Salazar sneered but nodded and left the frame.
“What are you going to do, please, this isn’t a time for macho fights,” Hermione said, trying to pull Remus away from the door. Snape appeared at the frame/door and eyed Remus suspiciously.
“Thank you,” Remus said suddenly. Hermione looked at him and then at Snape, who raised his eyebrows. “Thank you for healing Hermione. What I did was unacceptable, and I’m glad that you were there to help her.” He extended his hand, and Snape reluctantly shook it.
“Yes well, you\'re despicable, and if it was up to me, I would have broken your nose,” Snape drawled casually, “But lucky for you Lupin, I respect Hermione’s wishes.” Remus made no attempt to retaliate.
“Thank you, you saved her,” Remus said, his voice a little strained.
“Don’t worry, I always will,” he replied before sneering. Remus pulled away and turned back to Hermione,
“Goodnight my Love,” he whispered. She was certain that she saw a flicker of anticipation in his eyes; did he expect her to return to him and forget what he had done? She nodded at him.
“I\'m not coming back to you,” she replied coldly. Remus sighed and turned away, returning to his room. Snape looked up at her.
“My bed still stands,” he said softly, “But the couch is so awfully uncomfortable,” he drawled, but Hermione saw in his eyes an inner longing. She drew close to him and pressed her hand to he cheek.
“I’m sorry, but I’m sleeping alone tonight,” she said softly, before kissing his cheek. “You are, however, in my thoughts.” Snape moved to kiss her lips softly and she returned it, before drawing away and smiling.
“Goodnight Severus.”
