A/N: Thanks again for all of the great reviews! I really don’t know how I’m going to end this, I have a couple ideas! Thanks for all of the suggestions! Sorry, this chapter is a little boring, I promise the next one will be better.

Chapter 10: Old Friends

Disclaimer: J.K. Rowling owns it, not me.

Hermione opened her eyes. The last thing she remembered was standing in Professor Dumbledore’s office. She remembered Remus, James, Sirius, Lily, and Alice. Hermione took in her surroundings. She was in the hospital wing.

“Hermione, you’re awake”. Harry was standing over her beaming.

“How are you feeling”? Ron was standing on the other side of her bed.

Hermione slowly sat up, a wave of disappointment came over. She felt tears reach the brim of her eyes. She felt so alone, she missed Remus and her friends already.

“What’s wrong”? Harry asked concerned.

“Nothing”. Hermione lied forcing a smile. “I’m just so happy to be back”.

“Yeah, it’s crazy how Neville’s potion actually worked”! Ron said. “So, tell us about it, where were you, how long were you there”?

Harry and Ron began throwing questions at her right and left. All Hermione could do was think of Remus. She wondered if he still remembered her in this time, and if she’d ever see him again. Then in dawned on her, Remus was on his way to see Dumbledore before she’d had the incident with the potion. He might still be there.

“Hermione, where on earth are you going”? Harry asked. Hermione had jumped out of bed and ran for the door of the hospital not stopping to answer. She ran fast through the corridors making her way to Professor Dumbledore’s office. When she reached the eagle statue leading to his office, it immediately began to reveal the stairs which lead to his office. Hermione reached the headmasters door and lightly knocked hardly able to stand still with anticipation.

“Miss Granger, how lovely for you to visit. Are you feeling better”? Professor Dumbledore greeted her.

“Yes, much better. Is Rem- I mean Professor Lupin here”? She asked trying not to sound too forward.

“I’m afraid he just left, but I’m sure you’ll see him in a few months during the Order meetings”. Professor Dumbledore answered.

Hermione felt defeated. She felt like she had just died, she doubted he even remembered her. Well, remembered her as she was in the time she spent in the past. Dumbledore saw the look of disappointment in her eyes.

“I realize you just arrived back from a rather interesting journey, due to a mishap with Mr. Longbottom’s final potion”. Professor Dumbledore said.

Hermione looked up and nodded, knowing if she tried to speak, only tears would fall from her eyes. Hermione did not like to look weak, especially in front of someone so well respected.

“This is in fact the reason Professor Lupin came to visit me this evening. We decided it would be best to let you sort the things that happened in his time, before the two of you spoke. I do realize there was a relationship between the young Remus Lupin and yourself, but you must remember that was the past. He is much older now, and has experienced many tragedies and things that life unfortunately throws at us. Things may not be the same in this day and age, as hard as that is to accept”. Dumbledore finished with a look of sympathy in his eyes.

Hermione understood. She wasn’t thinking rationally right now. How could a man who was her former professor ever have any sort of feelings for her? How could she expect to just zap back into her own time and continue this relationship with him. It wasn’t going to happen. Hermione felt a heavy weight on her heart.

“I understand, sir”. Hermione said biting her lip to keep the tears from falling. “Sorry for intruding, goodnight”.

“Anytime Miss Granger. Goodnight.” Professor Dumbledore said.

Hermione walked slowly back to her dormitories. Harry and Ron were waiting for her in the common room. They didn’t ask her anymore questions, just watched her walk up the stairs the girls dormitories.

Hermione didn’t sleep well, in fact she didn’t sleep at all that night. She was so depressed and so exhausted. It was the weekend, so she didn’t have to worry about classes for another day.

The next morning at breakfast Ron and Harry continued to stare at Hermione, too afraid to bring up where she had been or what she had done. This continued for the next week. Hermione’s exams brought her out of her state of depression. She now had something to occupy her mind. This was her last year, so she was going to attempt to make the best of it, and worry about her situation with Professor Lupin later, seeing as if she even had a situation.

After about a month, Hermione was beginning to feel like her old self again. Ron and Harry were both thankful for this, but they still didn’t ask too many questions. They figured she would tell them when she was ready.

It was a week before her final exams, Hermione walked down to breakfast with her normal pile of books and assignments. She sat down next to Harry and Ron who were beaming with excitement.

“Hermione, look who’s here”. Harry pointed to the staff table. “He’s going to be a guest speaker in our care of magical creatures class”.

Hermione looked over at the staff table. Her breath caught in her throat, Professor Lupin was sitting next to Professor Dumbledore talking quietly. Hermione looked away and tried not to let emotions take over, but she failed. Her heart was beating fast and all of the memories flooded her mind.

“This is great”! Ron said. “Too bad he couldn’t be in our defense against the dark arts class. I can’t stand the new idiot they have”.

“It will be great”. Harry said.

‘Care of magical creatures is going to be interesting’. Hermione thought to herself.

Hermione left early for her first class attempting to avoid Professor Lupin. Thank Merlin Care of Magical Creatures wasn’t until the end of the day. She began thinking of of ways to get out of her last class. She could fake sick and go to the hospital wing, but she was not good a faking sick. She could just skip, but that wasn’t like her. She figured she would just go to class, take notes, and leave without saying anything. She would later make up and excuse she had to meet with a professor about a writing assignment.

Hermione’s day was going by way to fast. Before she knew it, she was walking with Harry and Ron to Hagrid’s hut. Many students had already arrived, but she didn’t see Professor Lupin. Harry, Ron, and Hermione gathered with the group of students. Harry and Ron made there way to the front, but Hermione stayed in the back of the crowd.

“Good afternoon class”. Hagrid and Professor Lupin had appeared in front of the class. “We have a guest speaker with us today, I’m going to let him take over. I trust you all to give him your attention”. Hagrid winked at Ron and Harry, but looked confused when he didn’t see Hermione. The two boys caught on to his confusion.

“Good afternoon. Today we will bet talking about….”. Professor Lupin began speaking. Ron weaved his way to the back of the crowd and pulled Hermione to the front.

“Ron, stop. I’m perfectly fine in the back”. Hermione whispered. She was almost to the front of the crowd when she tripped over Neville’s foot landing flat on her face.

“Miss Granger, are you alright”? Professor Lupin stopped his lecture to look at her lying face down on the ground.

Hermione couldn’t find the words to speak. She just nodded her head and pulled herself off the ground glaring at Ron and Neville. She dusted off her robes and stood in the front between Ron and Harry.

The class lasted way to long, it was so awkward. Especially, when Professor Lupin would look in her general direction. She felt that her heart was being ripped out every time he spoke. When the lecture did finish up, Ron and Harry dragged Hermione over to chat with Professor Lupin.

“You guys, I need to talk to Professor Snape about a potion”. Hermione was trying to make up lame excuses, but they pulled her over to where Hagrid and Professor Lupin were talking.

“Professor, it’s so good to see you again”. Harry stated.

“It’s good to see all of you as well”. He responded smiling at each of them. Hermione was doing her best to hide behind the two boys. “Hermione, are you ok. I saw you take a fall earlier”. Professor Lupin asked concerned.

“Oh, uh yeah fine, just clumsy and Neville’s foot, well you know it happens”. Harry and Ron just looked at her confused. It was unlike Hermione to be at a loss for words.

Hermione kicked herself mentally for acting so childish. Ron and Harry continued to talk to Professor Lupin. Hermione let her mind wander. She began thinking about the times she had with Remus in the past. This triggered her anxiety to hit once again. She was pulled out of her thoughts by Harry’s voice.

“Hermione, are you ok”? Harry asked. She came back to reality realizing everyone was staring at her in concern.

“Oh, yes I’m fine”. Hermione answered.

“Do you two mind if I have a word alone with Hermione? I have something important to talk to her about”. Professor Lupin asked.

Hermione’s heart began to double in rate, she felt like she was going to pass out. What on earth was she going to say to this man? She couldn’t even complete a proper sentence around him.

“Of course” Ron and Harry answered.

“Let’s go for a walk”. Professor Lupin said leading them towards the lake. All Hermione could do was nod.
