The Feast
Draco and Kay sat at the Slytherin table together. Crabbe and Goyle took the seats opposite, and Blaise Zabini and Theodore Nott sat as close as they could. Draco rolled his eyes at Kay. Everyone was clamouring to sit as close to him as possible. Harry, Ron and Hermione sat at the Gryffindor table together, all suspicious of the girl at the other table. She and Draco were talking as she examined a goblet with the crest of Hogwarts on it lightly. Suddenly, feeling his gaze on her, Kay’s eyes rose, to meet Harry’s across the room. To his surprise, his scar did not prickle form the intensity of her gaze, but he felt something stir inside him. She looked away at the moment he almost realised what it was. Before he could say anything, Dumbledore stood. The room fell quiet instantly, and Harry turned to look at the old man.
‘Welcome to yet another year at Hogwarts. I’m hoping that the summer away from us has not been too painful.’ Some students tittered. ‘First, I must welcome Professor Yamaha. After Dolores Umbridge’s removal from Hogwarts at the end of last year, he has agreed to take the position of Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher. He is an Auror for the Ministry of Magic, and will be here for your protection in case of an attack on the school. Luckily, we are also graced by yet another protective arm. Many of you have studied the witch labelled as the ‘Princess of the Eagles’. She was thought of as a mystical creature, with abilities of magic without
the requirement of a wand. However, the legend has chosen to come here to Hogwarts to offer yet another ally to us in the fight against Voldemort.’ People trembled at that. ‘Finally, the Ministry has accepted that the Dark Lord has once again begun his quest for ultimate power. I imagine most you felt scared and apprehensive as you travelled back to Hogwarts this year. I can tell you that you will be inexplicably safe here in this castle. However, I will promise you that no harm will befall you if you concentrate on your studies. With such a strong army, an ever-growing army, as his enemy, we know that we still pose qualities that will triumph in our fight against him: hope, courage and trust. Without these three vital feelings, we will crumble. So do not go to your lessons fearful of an attack that will never come, go there full of the knowledge that no matter how many times evil rears it’s head may it be on
such a global scale, or just in your class, you will always beat it back. We will always triumph in the eternal fight against evil. Why?’ silence fell, and Dumbledore smiled down at everyone calmly and honestly. ‘Because no evil is greater or stronger or more powerful than human nature. For, without it, evil would die. Without evil, however, the human nature would continue to prosper. It requires us to exist, but we do not require it. Banish it from your souls, and help us banish it form the Earth. Voldemort may win. He may overrun this Earth, and beat me and torture me and kill me. But all he shall achieve is a dead body. My soul will never be his.
Neither will any of yours. You are the only one in charge of you. Make your own choices and refuse to be bent by the power of evil.
One voice alone is enough. One candle will banish the dark. You can make a difference, and every one of you will. But enough my idle ramblings. Let us now feast.’ The food appeared as he sat down. Draco and Kay looked at each other.
‘Influential, huh?’ Draco asked. She shrugged.
‘I’ve heard worse. Like you trying to convince those villagers in that crazy town that we meant no harm.’ He pulled a face at her, and she elbowed him, and began to help herself to chicken.
‘What?’ Blaise asked.
‘You tell him,’ said Kay, and Draco smirked, happily indulging in tales of how he and Kay had travelled the world. Kay rolled her eyes at his exaggerations, and looked up, once again making eye contact with Harry Potter. She shivered slightly. Somehow, looking into those great green depths sent a wash of fear over her. She wondered what it was, before pinpointing it: the haunted, dead look in there. It was a shadow on the love and caring he felt for those, but was not quite a big enough shadow. She tore her gaze away once more, to correct Draco, and when she looked back up, Harry was talking to Hermione.
‘What did Dumbledore call her?’ he asked.
‘The Princess of the Eagles,’ replied Hermione. ‘We’ve studied her.’ Harry nodded vaguely, remembering the text. He glanced back at Dumbledore, who smiled knowingly at him. Harry turned back to the feast, loosing himself in the conversation, as Kay did at the Slytherin table, but, he thought constantly of the feelings that had run through him. Wonder and fascination and… maybe a hint of lust?
