Chapter X: Loyalty

Chapter X: Loyalty

09/05/1996
Lucius woke up before dawn with a sharp pain in his left arm. Oh, how much he wished it had been a heart attack and not what he feared, though it was too close to his wrist to be a heart attack… He looked at the Dark Mark in his forearm and cursed to himself. Whenever the Dark Mark burned, it meant his Master was calling a Death Eater meeting and, unless you wanted to be tortured, you had to go looking for him. But when the Dark Mark pained the way Lucius’ was, it meant his Master wanted to see him and him alone.

Meeting the Dark Lord on his own was nothing Lucius was looking forward to, especially after his clairvoyant daughter had predicted his murder, but not going before the Dark Lord when he had been chosen amongst a crowd of Death Eaters to meet him equalled to committing suicide. So, he wished for the best and got dressed to meet his Master.

Moments later, he apparated outside the headquarters, Salazar Slytherin’s supposedly abandoned castle. The location was perfect… in the middle of the Atlantic. Muggles still didn’t understand why their ships would disappear when they tried to go across it, after all it was invisible to them.

‘Curabitur et libero’, Lucius pronounced the password and the castle opened its gate for him to enter.

He walked through the dark corridors, following the source of his pain. The closer he got to his Master, the less the Dark Mark hurt him. He reached the room where the meetings took place in and, stranding alone facing the lit fireplace, stood Lord Voldemort.

‘Malfoy…’, he said in an inhuman voice without turning around to look at him. ‘What took you so long?’

‘Master, I came as soon as I…’

‘Silence! I didn’t mean after I called you, I meant after you escaped!’, he yelled and he looked at Lucius with his furious snaky eyes.

Lucius immediately kneeled before him and looked down in respet.

‘Bellatrix came to see me the day after she escaped along with you. Goyle came three weeks ago. But you… you didn’t show your face to your Master willingly. I demand to know why.’

‘Master, I didn’t think it would be safe to come before you. The Ministry is looking for us and I didn’t want to take any risks that might reveal your whereabouts.’

‘I sense your fear, Malfoy. And it’s not the wise fear you should have for your Master, but fear for yourself. Where you scared to come to see me?’, he hissed taking a few steps in Lucius’ direction.

‘Yes, Master’, Lucius swallowed. Lying to him was pointless.

‘Stand up’, he ordered and Lucius did so.

The Dark Lord walked closer to him, exposing every inch of his bony, horrifying face to him. In one fast movement, he gripped Lucius throat tightly. Lucius bit his bottom lip, making a great effort to get some air in his lungs, but he did not fight the hand that was chocking him. His own hands were at his sides, closed in firm fists, but he did not move them. He felt as though his head would burst, his chest hurt but not as much as his Dark Mark. The Dark Lord’s grip tightened even more and, when Lucius was about to lose his consciousness, he let go of him.

Lucius fell on his knees, gasping for air and rubbing his aching throat.

‘Well, at least your loyalty hasn’t flaked’, the Dark Lord hissed. ‘I don’t want you back out on the oath you took to me. You are one of my best Death Eaters, but people change… if you ever doubt about who or what you are, I’ll know. And if that ever happens, I’ll finish what I started. You may go now.’

Lucius bowed and left the castle as fast as he could. He could still feel that icy hand around his neck and his own life trying to slip away from him. This was too much for him… he needed to know…

He opened the door to Hera’s bedroom and woke her up abruptly.

‘You better tell me who it is! I’ll torture you if you don’t!’, he yelled and aimed his wand at her.

‘I won’t tell you anything!’, she cried. ‘But if you don’t leave me alone, Draco will kill you himself and you know it!’

‘Argh! I should have killed you when I had the chance!’, he yelled. ‘You should consider yourself lucky for the brother you have… if I didn’t love him, you would be long dead by now…’

He slammed the door behind him, leaving Hera crying alone in the dark. She wanted Draco back by her side, but he was a long way away to come and defend her. All she could do was touch her ring and sob.
