CHAPTER 10 - REACH OUT (I'LL BE THERE)
See Chapter one for disclaimer.
Now if you feel that you can\'t go on,
Because all of your hope is gone,
And your life is filled with much confusion,
Until happiness is just an illusion,
And your world around is crumbling down, darling,

Reach Out "“ Four Tops
The hooded figure came to stand outside the Council's Headquarters as the sun was rising over the Thames. He entered a code on the on the panel and slipped inside. A whispered incantation later and he was standing in the lobby looking back as the steel cage reappeared behind him. He walked across the lobby and down the stairs with the surety of someone who had been there before. The sight of four men and one woman asleep, scattered around the library, stopped him momentarily and then something caught his eye.
He walked over to where the redhead was slumped over the desk and picked up the pad she had been writing on. The quill by her hand twitched once and then lay still as though it had just given up through sheer exhaustion. Before he could even glance at what had been written, an arm shot out from behind him and caught him around the neck and a voice whispered in his ear, "You'd better have a damn good excuse for being here friend or I'm gonna rip your head off," the figure froze for a moment.
"Faith?"
She released her arm so suddenly she caused the figure to stumble to the floor, his hood falling back to reveal, "Andrew?" Faith shook her head then reached out to help him up, "damn boy you're lucky I didn't do you some serious damage. What in the hell are you doing here?"
"Well Faith," said Andrew brushing himself down and giving her a self-important look, "I happen to be a member of the watchers council of Great Britain."
Faith burst out laughing, "Oh thanks Andrew I needed that."
He frowned at her, "I'm not joking Faith I'm quite serious."
"Yeah right. C'mon Andrew who would hire you as a watcher."
"I would actually," Giles's voice drifted down from the top of the stairs at the entrance to the stacks. Faith turned and looked as he sat up from where he had obviously fallen asleep in the middle of researching.
She looked at him incredulously then shook her head and mumbled, "Glad I don't need a watcher anymore, this place has really hit rock bottom."
"Who told you that you don't need a watcher Faith?" asked Giles, coming down the stairs and walking around the table.
"Giles, you're not serious?" she said, following him as he walked towards his office.
He stopped and turned to her. "Faith, what do you think it is that we do here? Willow and I have to find new watchers for all the slayers we created, We have to train them and test them and send them out into a world full of horrors that you and Buffy take for granted. I appreciate that you and Buffy have been doing this for the longest but that doesn't mean that eventually neither of you will not have want of a watcher."
"I never needed a watcher Giles, I've always been better on my own. All you watchers ever did for me was cause trouble," her voice was steady but her face spoke volumes.
"That's not fair Faith," said Giles, "all slayers need a watcher at some point or another."
Faith spun around angrily. "Yeah? What for? To get themselves killed when I think I've found a friend, or to turn me over to people who want me dead when they can't control me," as soon as she said it, she regretted it. She remembered what she had done to Wesley, she'd never really told him how sorry she was, and now he'd never know.
She walked away from them with a heavy heart. Andrew was peering over Willows notes again. "Andrew," shouted Faith, "give it up will ya?" he jumped at her voice as did Willow and Remus who both sat bolt upright blinking and trying to get their bearings.
"I'm up," said Remus sleepily looking around the room.
"Just closed my eyes for a second," said Willow pulling a face as she ran her hand through her hair and found it sticking straight up. Faith would have smiled if she hadn't been so angry.
Dumbledore opened his eyes looking well rested and relaxed and not at all as though he had spent the night sleeping upright in a chair. He conjured up pots of tea and coffee and everyone started to wake up a little. Willow greeted Andrew and immediately showed him her notes, causing Faith to throw her hands up in despair.
She turned away and walked over to Sirius who was sound asleep on the sofa. Faith had been on there with him all night. His head and shoulders draped in her lap, until she had heard the noise that was Andrew.
She crouched down in front of him and studied his face. In sleep he looked so much younger and she wondered for a minute what there was about his life that he hadn't told her, that caused him to look so much older than his years when he was awake. (Of course,) she thought to herself, (I can't say anything about that having some pretty scary skeletons in my own closet, and I suppose being thrown through a mystical whatsit to another country and losing your powers is enough stress one lifetime.)
"Sirius," she whispered shaking him softly. His hand shot out and grabbed her around the wrist. She drew in a sharp breath and looked at him, his grey eyes alert, darting around the room.
"Sirius its ok it's me, Faith," she said bringing her free hand up to touch his face.
"Sorry Faith," he muttered swinging his legs round and letting go of her, "force of habit."
She smiled at him, "uh huh, I get it."
"Ah Sirius you're awake, good," said Dumbledore coming over and placing a mug of coffee in front of the younger man. "I will be going to collect Harry, Ron and Hermione soon but we still need to keep going over this and researching I'm afraid," he said smiling at the roll of eyes from Sirius and Faith.
Andrew, who had been quiet while he read through Willow's notes, put his hand up slowly like he was in a class, "Excuse me professor, but has anyone tried to test Sirius's powers since he got back. I mean, Willow tells me that you're the most powerful wizard alive so surely you should be able to test him and maybe find something from that. Or at least be able to get into this department of mysteries and have a look at the veil. I mean it obviously does something, right? Creepy veil in the basement of a government building? sounds like a conspiracy to me, like something from the X-Files," he picked up a biscuit and dunked it into his tea, "I bet Mulder and Scully could've worked it out, that Mulder, he's so dedicated," he said to himself with a wistful sigh.
They all turned and looked at the young man who had pointed out the obvious. Everyone looked like they wanted to smack their hand to their forehead for looking too deep into the properties of the veil and what could have happened, rather than going and seeing for themselves.
"Andrew you're a genius," said Faith looking surprised, "a total geek but a genius."
"Thank you Faith," said Andrew with a nod.
"Sirius, I will test you as soon as I get back" said Dumbledore standing to leave.
"No," said Sirius, "do it now. It's bad enough that Harry will have to know that something's wrong with my magic, I don't want him to have to watch it as well"
Dumbledore sighed, "As you wish Sirius."
Faith looked at Sirius's face and realised that he was terrified. She grabbed his hand and he looked down at her forcing a tight smile onto his face. She stretched up on tiptoe and kissed him lightly on the mouth. He ran his hand down the smoothness of her hair before he moved away and pulled out his wand. Everyone else in the room looked away or made themselves busy, uncomfortable with the rogue slayer and the rebellious wizard showing tenderness to one another.
Dumbledore gave Sirius a list of spells to perform while he cast a spell over Sirius to gage his power. Sirius could only manage the weaker spells and even then he had to concentrate for minutes at a time.
"I cannot see anything wrong with your base magic Sirius, it's the magic which has built up over the years that is diminishing. Let me go and get Harry and then I will return to the school to check some of the books I have there," and he turned to the fireplace he had set up in the corner of the room and attached to a restricted floo network and he was gone.
Sirius slumped down on the sofa; Faith sat next to him cross-legged and let out a huge yawn.
"Didn't sleep well?" asked Sirius, brushing her hair back to look into her pale face.
"Not so much," said Faith with a small smile, enjoying the feel of his hand in her hair and knowing that she was well and truly lost where this man was concerned, and that if there was a next time between them she wouldn't hold back. "Of course if Andrew here hadn't been creeping around like a big loser I probably would have got a little more," she said loudly enough to carry across the library. Andrew held his hands out as if to say "˜who me?' then went back to talking to Giles.
"I heard you in the night Faith. I know that you were having one of those nightmares that you insist are nothing, yet make you shake with fear."
Giles's head snapped around suddenly, "What dreams?"
Faith looked at Sirius and it wasn't a friendly look, "Thanks for that," she said sarcastically. She looked at Giles, "It's nothing to get your panties in a bunch about Giles, just a few bad dreams is all."
"Come on Faith, you know as well as we do that slayer dreams are not always just bad dreams, you can't blame Giles for being concerned," said Willow.
"Really, it's nothing guys," said Faith. Her dreams were getting worse and she knew now they were not just dreams but really didn't want to relive again for everyone else.
"Faith," said Sirius coming to stand in front of her, "it's not nothing, is it? I've seen your face while you sleep, they terrify you."
Faith looked down and took a deep breath, looking up into Sirius's eyes. "No it's not nothing," without taking her eyes off of him she said, "He has red eyes and cold, high pitched voice which feels like it's sending ice through my veins. I know he's real, he's evil and he's here in England," she paused, "I was warned not to come here or I'd be killed."
Sirius grabbed her by the shoulders, "Then what the hell did you come here for? You should have stayed behind, I would have got back in the end, or I would have been stuck out there but either way I would never have wanted you to endanger yourself like this."
Faith smiled at his rant, she couldn't help it. She couldn't remember a time when anyone had been worried about her. It should have made her angry but the look in his eyes was so sincere. He really would rather have been lost in a strange country than put her in danger. She closed the distance between them and slid her arms up around his neck pulling him down to her and kissing him, softly at first, then harder.
She broke away and smiled, "What's life without a bit of danger?" she turned to Giles who was furiously cleaning his glasses, "Any clue to who my monster is?"
"He calls himself Lord Voldemort," said a voice from behind her.
Everyone turned to look at the dark haired teenager who was standing by the fireplace, "but he's not a lord, he is just a monster."
Sirius let go of Faith's waist. "Harry," he said, smiling.
Harry walked slowly towards him, his face calm, empty of emotion, except his eyes. Sirius could see the turmoil in the boys eyes, the fear, relief and joy there. They stood in front of each other for a second and then Harry grabbed Sirius in a bear hug. Sirius stood for a moment, stunned as the impact of what his death as Harrys only "˜family' might have meant to Harry, sunk in.
"It's alright Harry, I'm here," he said softly wrapping his arms around his godson.
Willow pulled Remus away from what was happening, "Are you telling me that that teenage boy is the last hope for the wizarding world?"
Remus looked at the witch in front of him sadly, "Ultimately, yes"
Willow glanced over at Harry. A teenager, chosen by a cruel twist of fate to lead a battle between good and evil. "Here we go again," she said quietly.
"So you're the boy who lived," said Faith as Harry pulled away from Sirius and regarded the stunning woman who had moved close to his godfather. He took in her clothing, the vest and short shorts, the mane of brunette hair and the aura of power that seemed to surround her.
Sirius looked over at her and Harry was almost embarrassed by the look on his godfathers face.
"Harry, I'd like you to meet Faith, the vampire slayer," Harry looked at Sirius and back at Faith, when a voice from behind them made them jump.
"Bloody hell!" The other two thirds of the golden trio had arrived.
