Predicting the outcome

Chapter 10 – Predicting the outcome.

Later in the day, Harry and Ron where running quickly up the stairs to the fourth floor, they were late for Divinations, and for once they where not worried about attending this class.
Not having the threat of his death predicted again this year, Harry was more relaxed at the idea of sitting though one of his least favourite subjects.

As the boys turned the corner then ran head on into the rest of the sixth year divinations students. Harry quickly grabbed Lavender and swung her around so he wouldn’t lose his footing, making her squeal in fright.

“Harry Potter, what’s the meaning of barrelling into me like that.” Lavender huffed as she patted her hair back into place.

Letting go of her Harry gave a cheeky smile.

“Sorry Lav, didn’t expect to see you when I turned the corner.”

Lavender huffed again and started walking away.

Ron called out. “Umm isn’t Divinations this way?” he pointed to the tower that was the usual location of the cl

“Nope, room change seems the new teacher doesn’t like the tower room.” Parvati huffed as she caught up with Lavender, who was mumbling about how she wasn’t enjoying this one iota.

Joining the rest of the small group, Ron whispered into Harry’s ear.
“Mate I’m starting to like this Professor already, and the class hasn’t even started yet.”
Harry nodded quickly in agreement with Ron.

“I wonder if she’ll predict your death this year too.” Ron laughed knowing it was one thing Harry disliked about the subject.

The small group turned the last corner quickly walking down to the room that would hold the class, Lavender and Parvati, were in a deep discussing about the lack of books being required for this year’s class and Harry managed to pick out a few grumbled comments about amateur teachers and this being a serious subject.

Hanna Abbot was the first of the group to reach the new class room door, she knocked carefully then before she could push it open the large wooden door flung its self open to reveal a room full of bright coloured bean bag chairs with small coffee tables scattered amongst the chairs.

“Welcome... Welcome to Divinations Sixth years!” a chirpy voice surprised the group.
Professor Star’s head and half her upper body was deep with in a big brown box, her left hand was waving above her slightly, allowing the students a quick glimpse of the Tattoo that covered her left wrist.

“Wow did you see what’s on her wrist.” Harry heard Lavender whisper to Parvati.

“Yeah I wonder what it is.” Parvati whispered back.

Before Harry could get a better look at the Professors arm, she stood up, her long hair was all messed, and brushing it away she smiled at the surprised group.

“Please, pull up a chair everyone, my name is Professor Raven Star, and I’ll be your flight attendant for your journey in to the wonderful world of Divinations.”

Harry watched the Professor start to pile small books in to her arms and walk around the tables dropping a few for each student.

“I would like to apologies for the lack of reading material in your letters this year, my fault completely.” She dropped a few books on the table that Ron and Harry were seated at; Harry looked over at the pile and picked up one.

The front of the book was a dark colour with many different images on it, in the middle of the cover in big bold gold letters ‘The Tarot Spellcaster by Terry Donaldson’ caught Harry’s attention.

“This isn’t the usual type of books we use.” Ron whispered to Harry, as if reading his mind.

“Now class most of the books you have already will be used in this subject this year, but when we do something different, I’ll supply you with the correct books.” The Professor grinned.

Standing in front of the class Harry watched the Professor clapped her hands together.

“Now any questions?”

*~*~*~*

“So far so good” Star thought to herself as she stood in front of the class waiting for the questions to start.
She had heard the unrest that bubbled in a few of the student’s minds at the thought of being in a new room with a new teacher, but from the looks of things she hadn’t started off on a bad note.

“Professor ... how long have you been teaching Divinations?”

“Good question Miss Brown let me see, it’s now 1:35pm and this class started at 1:30pm so that would mean I’ve been teaching this subject for a whole five minutes.”

A few members of the group sniggered at her comment but this seemed to make the girl blanch, Star could hear the words of disbelief run around in her head.

“You mean to say you’ve NEVER taught this subject before?”

“That’s correct Miss Brown, but it does not mean I do not know how to teach the subject.”

Looking at the girl, Star had to stop herself from chuckling, the two members of the class that she had been warned about were close to storming out of the room, going by the thoughts they were projecting.

“Ok... ok... I get the feeling you would prefer I show you I’m quiet capable of teaching this class, then just mealy telling you I can.”

Quickly glancing around the room, Star turned towards her desk and picked up her copy of the book she had just passed out, her mind prickled as a thought posed in her direction came to light.

“Please Miss Patil, could you reframe from using that type of language when in this class room.”

“But Professor!” The girl squeaked. “I never said a word.”

Rolling her eyes Star waved it off, to the quiet murmurs in the background as Miss Patil and Miss Brown whispered questions rapidly back and forth to each other.

“Oh great another mind reader, I thought Snape was bad enough.”

“What is so bad about reading mind’s Mister Weasley?” Star turned back towards the class and watched as Ron’s face went bright red.

“I didn’t even say that out loud Professor.” Watching the comprehension dawn on the boy’s mind, I voice from the back beat him to the punch. “You can read minds?”

“Yup, I can read them, hear them, and….” Star turned towards her desk and sat herself down.

“Can return the mental favour; when I feel like it.”

Rapid gasps filled the room as the students all heard the rest of Star’s answer.
The expressions on their faces mirrored the thoughts that flowed from their minds.

Clapping her hands together to gain the classes attention Star opened her book.

“Ok, so we got that little bit out of the way, now down to the day’s lesson.”

“You’re a Telepath?” the startled voice of Miss Brown interrupted Star before she could get her next words out.

Sighing softly, knowing that this type of question was inevitable.

“Yes Miss Brown, that I am, but this really doesn’t have much to do with Divinations. Now if you don’t mine can I continue with what I was going to say?”

Knowing that she had cut the train of the conversation off before it had even started, Star knew most of the students where in awe of what they had just learnt.

“Now I have seen little what you’ve been taught so far, and guessing that your taking Newt levels in this class when I’m about to teach you this year will be rather easy..”

Star crossed her left leg over her right and jiggled her foot slowly as she surveyed the room, thinking so far so good.

“Now Miss Brown would you be so kind as to tell me what the major aspects of Divinations your Professor taught Last year?

“Ahh, well Crystal Ball gazing, Tarot reading, I-c, Te, Tea Leaves, Birth chart reading.”

Star razed her hand quickly, stopping Lavender mid –list.

“Ok I get the idea, a pretty broad range of subjects.”

“Yes Professor.” Miss Brown’s blonde hair bobbed as she shook her head in agreement.

“Hmm, ok well I will be touching on subjects that Professor Trelawney has already taught you as well as teaching you at least three new forms of Divination.”

Stauckluckled as most of the class groaned at the idea of learning more new things.

“Oh come on you lot, don’t dismiss it too soon, these three new things are rather fun, and once we get thought those, we can get down to the really fun stuff I have planned.”

Jumping off the desk, Star picked up the three books on her desk and held them up in front of her.

“As you can see, I have supplied you with three books that will come in handy this term. They are Tarot Magic, Aura reading in Nature, and my all time favourite “help! I’ve lost my keys – A guide to Divining with a Pendulum” “

A few muffled laughs followed the last text books name.

“Now I would like you all to have a read thought these books by next class, and Mr Weasley don’t groan I won’t be testing you.”

Ron looked up in surprise as the Professor smiled back at him quickly.

“Oh and Mr Weasley could you explain to me why your thinking about Mr Potter’s Death so much?”

Ron’s ears went a slight Red colour as he fidgeted in his chair.

“Well you see Professor each year we’ve had this class Professor Trelawney would predict Harry’s death.”

“Lovely” Star’s eyes grew wide.

“Yeah well I’m just relieved you haven’t done it as well.”

“Well I hate to tell you Mr Weasley, I will not be predicting much death and destruction this year.”

Star watched as both boys’ sighed in relief.

“You see unlike Trelawney, who has rather amazing visions, I’m only good at predicting Quidditch Matches.”

Half the class gave a few laughs woops and laughs.

“Which class brings me back to the major bit of fun I was planning for this year, how would you all like to test your Divinations skills and predict the outcome of all the years House Match’s?”

“This is ridicules, you can’t be serious Professor.” Miss Brown gasped at the idea.
“Divinations happen to be a very serious subject, Professor Trelawney would never agree to this.”

“I agree with you there, Miss Brown it is a serious subject, and this project is also very serious too. It is a known fact that in some muggle sporting field’s people will turn to divinations to know who to bet on, or to know who will win at certain things.”

Star watched Miss Brown grumble softly, as Miss Patil whispered in the girl’s ear.

The rest of the class went on without a hitch, the rules of the “project” were explained and all the silly questions were given sillier answers.
Which seemed to make the entire class laugh and as the end of the class came around to many students disappointment, Star felt that she had done a pretty good job.
