Title: Hero

Summary: After Draco suddenly defects to the side of Light in the midst of battle, Harry's decision to sacrifice himself for the sake of the Wizarding world weighs heavy on his mind, and heart. (Ignores some DH events, and gives a twist to others. My reality from the skirmish in the Room of Requirement.)

Disclaimer: I don't own the series. If I did, you had better believe I wouldn't have written the Epilogue From Hell. I also make no money from this. It's just a fantasy to wank an imaginary dick to. At least, mine's imaginary. ;)

*~*~*

The still air pressed onto the shaking form of the dark haired seventeen year old boy, doing nothing to quell the trembling in his limbs. He still felt the blazing heat of the Fiendfyre despite it being confined in the Room of Requirement, just down the hall. He still felt the effects of the last year and the hunt for Horcruxes. He STILL felt the odd mixture of feelings towards the world's biggest blonde-headed prat, that had churned inside him for seven long years.

He could hear the battle raging, even up in the highest floors of Hogwarts but no sounds penetrated his thoughts any deeper than simple background noise; he stared across to the blonde just a mere three feet away, the once proud Malfoy on his knees and panting heavily from the exertions of narrowly escaping certain death. The impressive lack of insults and curses stretched on into a silence between the two before the raven-locked bloke opened his mouth.

"You owe me, Malfoy." Harry said, breaching the silence.

He turned to leave, intent on finding his friends and returning to the battle before their fates were sealed. They needed him as much as he needed them to need him. That need filled him now, a icy chill settling in the pit of his stomach, knowing Ron and Hermione took off without him, in a school full of trained and ruthless murderers.

"Potter...!" Draco called, reaching a trembling hand out for his boyhood nemesis.

Harry paused after a step and half turned to look at the Death Eater initiate. One of those trained murderers knelt here, reaching out to him. A bolt flashed in his mind reminding him that just because he took the Mark doesn't mean he has actually killed anyone. Guarded green eyes pierced broken greys, his only acquiesce being a slightly raised brow.

"Please...you know I didn't want this. He made me. He threatened my-" Draco gushed, wetness blurring his eyes and threatening to cascade down soot-smudged cheeks.

Harry cut him off with a chop of his hand, turning to face the pureblood progeny. He froze the sympathy that bit and tore at him in rapid succession, the same sympathy that lead to Harry swooping down into the curse fire, only to emerge with the terrified blonde clutching at him for dear life.

"I know. I was there the night SNAPE killed Dumbledore. What do you want." Harry spat, cutting right to the chase.

"I don't want to fight anymore. I never did. I need protection, Potter..." he intoned, a trace of his frantic thoughts escaping his finely bred mouth; he didn't expect what came next.

Harry burst into humorless laughter, eyes going cold. "I suppose you should have thought about that before you and your cronies summoned up that curse fire. You tried to kill me. Why would I help you further than I have?"

Draco couldn't hold back any longer. His hated rival was staring him down, no ounce of sympathy visible. Unbidden, his weakness tracked wet trails down his face. "Please..." He whispered.

Harry turned to go. He got only a handful of steps away before his ears picked up a heartbroken sob.

"Harry..."

A disconcerting shiver raced down his spine, but he covered the reaction with a huff. Without turning around he bit out "What!"

The only answer that was forthcoming was a pair of pleading eyes coming into his range of vision, the panicked footsteps of the owner preceding them. The young man was pouring tears; Harry distinctly didn't favor the sight. With a gut-wrenching breath, he slowly raised a hand to Draco's face and used a thumb to wipe away the filthy, wet mess. Silvery orbs closed and the month-older boy leaned into the light touch almost unknowingly.

"You should have came to our side sooner. I can't help you further..." Harry muttered softly, regretting the statement. He tried once more to step away and return to the fight when a cold, smooth hand covered the calloused one that was slipping from contact with Draco's cheek. Before he could retract his hand, however, too-warm lips pressed against his palm.

"Malf-" he started, when a massive shock ran through the building, tipping the floors and walls, toppling the blonde into the brunette with a muttered oath. Harry managed to catch Draco and himself before the they fell into a heap. Once ensconced in the arms of the Chosen One, said boy could feel the tremors that wracked the pale young man to the core. Harry's heart won out against his head and gave Draco a quick squeeze.

"I can't promise I'll protect you, Draco. But I'll do what I can." He said, stepping away finally. He took a deep breath. "I'll find you after this. I have to go, but I'll come back and find you. We'll talk about this. If you want me to defeat him, and you want protection, stay out of our way. Hide." Harry rushed, sparing one last confused look in the direction of the lithe blonde before tearing off to meet his enemy.

Draco stared down the hall for what seemed hours after Harry turned the corner, but was in reality, only minutes. Harry called him Draco... He traced the path the brunette made slowly, wishing with all his might that he came out of this alive.

*~*~*

Harry forced Draco...Malfoy out of his mind, calling up thoughts of the quickest way to the ground floor. As he pulled aside a tapestry concealing a hidden stair, he gasped in pain as his scar flared up, and the familiar walls of Hogwarts shimmered away to be replaced with creaking, slanted walls.

"My Lord..."

A/N: This is just a rather short little story that tweaks the final war with a what if Draco defected plot. I will cut out quite a bit of the original sequence, but it's for the sake of the plot. I don't care if you flame..really I don't. You won't hurt my precious feelings none. I'll update whenever I feel like a chapter is ready. So reviewing with demands of updates won't make me go faster...
