Chapter One

To say that he wasn’t expecting Harry Potter to come visit him was an understatement. Severus stood at his door staring at the boy that live. He looked…different. More mature, but also a little frayed along the edges as well, Severus thought.

“Professor Snape,” Harry said, clearing his throat. “Are you feeling better, sir?”

“Somehow, I doubt you came all this way only to inquire as to my wellbeing, Mr. Potter,” he murmured, a rough edge to his low voice standing out. “What do you want?”

Raking his hair, Harry muttered, “I should have known you wouldn’t make this easy.” Looking into his former teacher’s black eyes, he asked, “May I come in? This isn’t something to be spoken about openly.”

Severus studied him a moment before stepping back and allowing him into his home. Closing the door, he went over to his small sitting room and watched as Harry Potter paced. It looked like he was trying to gather his wits, but perhaps he was giving the dolt too much credit?

“Please make it quick, Mr. Potter. I have several potions I wish to brew before I die,” he said in a dry sarcastic tone that nearly had the young man leaving from the look of him.

Fisting his hands, Harry forced himself to stay put. “Hermione Granger is missing.”

This hit Severus hard, but he didn’t let it show as he asked, “And this has what to do with me?”

“Just hear me out,” he said. “Two weeks ago she was getting ready for her last term at Hogwarts. Everything was fine with her…”

“How do you know?” Severus interrupted. “How do you know everything was fine with her?”

Harry blinked at him. “Uh, she said that she was okay?”

“Really? Are you sure?” He leaned forward as he pressed, “Because you don’t seem very positive of that fact.”

Harry’s eyes went hard. “We’ve all been going through difficulty! You were nearly killed, I nearly died, and…”

“And Miss Granger was so fucking thrilled nary a single one of her supposed friends can find her,” he cut in. “What aren’t you telling me?”

“I don’t know what…” Severus stood up sharply and was in his face within seconds.

“What aren’t you telling me,” he demanded in a growl. “I can see it in your eyes as clearly as I can see the fact you want to push this hunt into my lap.”

Harry swallowed thickly. “Before she left, Hermione was…depressed. She was trying to pull herself out of it, but…” He swallowed thickly. “Ron told me that she caught him with two war hero groupies…”

“What in the name of Merlin is a war hero groupie?”

“A person that will throw themselves at famous people from the war. She caught him in bed with two of them.”

“And?” he breathed. “There’s always an and.”

“They were both young men,” Harry muttered.

“Oh yes,” Severus said in a hiss. “And yet Hermione was okay, correct?”

“It wasn’t as if they had an established relationship…”

“Please, Mr. Potter, if you are going to defend that idiot friend of yours, the least you can do is come up with something that doesn’t sound so asinine or overused.” Stepping away from Harry, he murmured, “When exactly did she disappear?”

“The day she found them,” Harry answered. “Two weeks ago last Friday.”

“And where exactly have you looked for her?”

“Australia,” he answered. “We thought for sure that she would have been there to get her parents, but we couldn’t find her or them.”

“That was it?” Severus inquired.

“We tried several large libraries around the world, not to mention a few predominate museums.”

Severus sighed heavily as he sat back down again. “My health will not permit extensive travel as of yet. I will require an assistant to do so in my stead.”

“Okay,” Harry rushed, hoping that he was going to take to looking for her.

“And it won’t be for free,” Severus told him, leaning back. “I may owe her my life, but I can’t very well pay my bills with a life debt, can I?”

“You want to be paid?”

“Yes, Saint Potter, I, unlike you, am in need of coin and I am not above putting a price on finding that know it all Gryffindor, even if you might think I shouldn’t.”

Pursing his lips, he muttered, “Very well.”

“And Mr. Potter?”

“Yes?”

“My services won’t come cheap.”

“You want me to what?” Lucius asked, sounding as if he had just smelled something rotting.

“Search for Hermione Granger,” he repeated. “She’s gone missing and Mr. Potter in all his wisdom…” Severus snorted at this point, scoffing at the last words he spoke. “Wants me to look for her. Why? I haven’t a clue. But seeing as I cannot travel as of yet, I need you to look for her in my stead.”

“Why would you want to?” Lucius muttered. “Wasn’t it enough that we lost the war to them? Now we have to do their bidding as well?”

“Two reasons,” he said casually. “One, I owe her a life debt. She’s the one that saved me. And two, for a great deal of money.”

“I already had a great deal of money, let me remind you.”

“Yes, and let me remind you that all of it is frozen up tighter than your soon to be ex-wife’s cunt.” That had the other man wincing. “Between Narcissa and the Wizmogot just how many knuts do you have left to spend that they don’t know about?”

“A pauper has more,” he muttered. “And what they don’t grab, Draco is.” Sighing he asked, “Just how much are you getting from him?”

“No where near enough,” Severus told him. “But more than we would have hoped for otherwise.”

“And I will be getting half?”

“You will be receiving a stipend,” he told his friend. “That way you cannot go wild spending moneys we don’t have.”

Rolling his eyes, Lucius complained, “Not even my father did as much.”

“Which only proves that if he had, you would know how to take care of yourself at age…”

“Point made,” the blond wizard cut him off. “Where do I start looking for the mud…”

“Please,” Severus said sounding pained. “Don’t call her that. If I have to suffer a lecture from anyone due to your inappropriate language, I’m going to hex you.”

“Well?”

“Start in Scotland,” he told his friend. “Specifically at the home of Minerva McGonagall. True, she’s at the school currently, but I wouldn’t put it beyond Miss Granger to take up lodging there with that old woman’s permission.” He leaned back in his chair, thinking for a moment before adding, “I will floo Minerva, but only once you get there to her home. I don’t want that chit leaving if that old bat sends you word that you’re on your way.”

“And what am I to do if I must leave the country? It isn’t as if I’m totally free of the charges against me.”

Severus nodded. “True, but if Mr. Potter wants her found, he’ll find a way. After all, Lucius, for this you shall be my Archie.”

“Your what?” he asked, looking genuinely insulted.

Rolling his eyes, the dark wizard muttered, “One of these days you must read a muggle book, if only to broaden your knowledge of the world at large.”
