Prologue

The stone was cool and soothing to Severus’ burning forehead as he lay prostrate on the floor.

He was thankful for the little things.

“My dear Severus, why do you make me punish you so? Don’t you know how much it pains me?”

Voldemort had kneeled down and was stroking Severus’ hair in an obscene parody of tenderness.

“My deepest apologies, my lord.” Severus rasped as he choked on rising vomit and bile.

It had actually been sometime since Voldemort had abused him. Nearly a record. Why he had chosen tonight to lay the scourge and the Cruciatus to him, Severus had no idea. He had brought him worse news and disappointments before and managed to escape with little more than a slap across the face.

The former Ravenclaw wizard was wailing from somewhere in the room. The sound turned Severus’ spine to ice as the tortured man screamed out his agony and heartbreak.

Why don’t they just kill him and have done with it? Severus thought.

He knew the answer of course. The killing curse was instantaneous, too merciful. They wanted the man to scream his life out slowly. The woman, the Muggle, was already dead and lay mutilated in front of her husband. They had strung the man up by his wrists and up until now had not touched him, at least physically. Rather, they forced the wizard to watch his wife be brutalized until she expired. Once she was dead, the Death Eaters started in on his body, each one taking his turn to match physically what they had already done to his mind and spirit.

Severus wondered what was more offensive to them, that the wizard was Muggle-born, or that he had married a Muggle. Not that it mattered much. He was dead either way.

Severus remembered him from school. He hadn’t known him personally, just by sight as they used to pass in the halls. The wizard hadn’t been a bad sort so far as Severus had been able to tell, but Ravenclaws and Slytherins didn’t really mingle and Severus especially hadn’t interacted with other students as a general rule.

Voldemort was now beside the wizard with his fingers touching the man’s temple, whispering in his ear as he hung slack in the chains and seconds away from his last breaths.

Severus heard the man sobbing, begging for something that wasn’t his life.

“Please no. Leave them alone.”

Laughter and jeers went up from the Death Eater collective as Voldemort moved away from the expiring wizard.

“Record these names on the list, Peter.” he said then murmured the information to the corpulent Pettigrew.

A Death Eater elbowed his way closer to Voldemort and bowed.

“My lord, may I have the honor?”

“Mmm? Yes, certainly George.” the Dark Lord answered with a distracted wave of a hand.

The Death Eater approached the dying man and yanked his head back by his hair, snarling with hatred and disgust.

“This’ll teach you not to respect your betters.”

The Ravenclaw didn’t make a sound as the dagger was plunged into his lower torso and dragged upwards. Severus turned his head away as the man was eviscerated.

The wizard was now and forever beyond pain.

Severus envied him.
