The Law

Chapter One

The law had gone into effect. Hermione could hardly believe it, as she read it in the Prophet. Coffee forgotten she went straight over to the floo and made a call over to the Burrow. Molly was there as were George and Fred, all of who were looking very worried. They told her to come on through.

When Hermione arrived, she asked, “Where’s Bill?”

“I don’t know,” Molly whispered, looking scared. “It’s just his luck that they past that idiotic law while he was visiting his family. It makes me think he would have been better off…”

Mrs. Weasley sobbed and Hermione rushed over to her, handing her a hankie and whispered, “No, Mrs. Weasley, he needed to come here to visit his family. We both know this.”

“We knew the law might pass!” she exclaimed on the top of a sob. “I should have told him to stay where he was! To stay safe…”

“That is nonsense,” Hermione cut her off. “Bill reads the paper. He knew what was going on just as well as we did. It’s just our luck that there was all these so called werewolf attacks.”

“So called?” Molly asked weakly.

“The timing is too convenient, don’t you think?” Hermione asked, looking over to the twins who both sat up straighter.

“If I had wanted a werewolf confinement law to pass…” George started.

“…I would do that,” Fred finished the sentence. “Plan the attacks to scare people.”

Hermione nodded. “Yes, but we need more information about this wizard pushing for this law. As it is all I’ve heard is that it’s a wizard of high standing, but haven’t heard a name. How about Percy? Has he said anything about whom it might be?”

Molly shook her head no. “Not a word.”

Hermione was about to say something when Sirius charged right through the floo. He was furious and was incoherent in his rant filled cursing.

“They took him!” he roared. “They burst into my home! My home!”

“Who?” Molly asked, as all of them dreaded they already knew the answer.

“Remus,” he answered, collapsing onto the sofa. “Oh Merlin, they have Remus!” Sirius looked over to Hermione. “He is the most gentle soul on earth. He would never hurt anyone.”

“I know,” she whispered, sitting next to him and taking his hands into her own. “We don’t know where Bill is either. We’re fearing the worse.”

He looked over to Molly. “Has anyone heard from Harry or Ron?”

Hermione’s face went red, thinking about the last time she had seen Ron. It had been months before. She had arrived at their shared flat to find him frantically fucking Lavender Brown. She had broken it off and had gone straight over to Remus to sob on his shoulder.

“Harry said that he was coming home tonight,” Molly said. “Ron said that he was involved in an undercover assignment.”

This only had Hermione snorting derisively. “That means that he is going to be busy with Lavender.”

“Ron is one of the best aurors in the department!” she exclaimed. “It isn’t his fault that you found him lacking!”

“Enough!” Sirius snapped. “First of all, it was Ron that cheated on Hermione. Second, Ron is no more an auror than I am. And third, not to mention last, we have bigger things to be concerned over than bruised egos.”

Molly's face was red as she glared at both of them now and muttered, “You are correct. We need to find Bill. How do you propose we do that?”

“I can find Bill and Remus,” Hermione said, standing up. “Sirius, I’m going to need your help.”

“Anything!” he said, joining her.

She took a deep breath and told him, “We need to get over to my house. I’ll explain it to you there.”

“Surely you can do it here,” Molly said, trying as she might to calm herself.

“No, I cannot,” Hermione told her. “I’ll get in touch with you when I have any information.”

Mrs. Weasley was still blustering at them as they flooed away.

Once they were back in her home, she sat down on her couch and said, “Molly still takes every word Ron utters as if it came from on high. But enough of that nonsense, I need to tell you something that I cannot have anyone else know. I know that you wouldn’t tell a soul, but I need a wizard’s oath.”

Sirius blinked at her owlishly.

“You cannot tell even Harry,” she whispered. “Please?”

“Okay,” he murmured, pulling out his wand and pressing it to his neck. “I swear that I will not speak of what you are about to tell me with anyone other than…” He paused and looked at her.

“Anyone other than Remus and Bill,” she told him.

He repeated this and both felt the magic surround them and settle. He looked at her as if to tell her to get on with it.

She took a deep breath. “I came into a magical inheritance.” She stood up and paced as she went on. “I have a certain connection with werewolves. Not just one of them, but all of them. I can control them as a matter of fact. I found out the hard way. I found Greyback.” She looked over to Sirius. “It was on the night we were looking for safe havens in the Forbidden Forrest the night of the full moon.”

“I remember,” he said thinking it over. “You vanished for a time.”

She nodded. “I was with Fenrir. We spoke for a time. He tried to convince me to be his mate as he was an alpha. He didn’t take it well, but he didn’t hurt me which is much more than you would have expected at any other time or with anyone else.”

“He didn’t bite you?” he asked in shock.

Hermione shook her head no. “I came out of it with not a scratch on my person.” She kneeled down in front of Sirius on the sofa, taking his hands. “I even have a small affinity with dogs.”

“Meaning?” he asked.

She reached out and cupped his face. Sirius’s breath caught in his chest, as his eyes slid shut and pressed his face against her palm. Hermione moved closer to him, stroking his hair with her other hand.

“Sirius,” she whispered against his ear. “Tell me what you are feeling.”

He took a deep breath and looked into her eyes. “I-I…Stop touching me!” he roared, and broke away from her. He was now looking at her in fear. “It was as if you were taking over my mind.”

“That’s because if I had put any real effort into it, I would have,” she told him. “Now imagine that without having to touch and ten times more powerful.”

“You’d be the mistress of the werewolves,” he breathed. “You would be able to control them all.”

She nodded. “I know, but there is more.”

“More?!” he exclaimed. “Just what could top that?”

“My animagus is a werewolf,” she said.

“I need a drink,” he muttered. “Where is the fire whiskey?”

“Your house,” she told him. “But we’d be better off getting it somewhere else. Chances are that they have aurors watching your place now.”

“And this is important because?”

“Why? Because, my comrade, we are going to find all the werewolves and set them free,” she said nonchalantly.

“Oh just that,” he muttered as they went to the door. “Where are we going?”

“I’ve heard of a lovely fire whiskey over at Hogwarts,” she told him.

They arrived at the school via apperation, walking into the school from the gatehouse. Sirius followed Hermione straight over to the headmaster’s office and was pouring the whiskey for the both of them when Severus Snape strolled in.

“What are you doing here?” Snape asked, glaring at Sirius and looked over to Hermione. “And why are you drinking my good fire whiskey?”

“Seeing as I gave it to you the least you could do is spare a glass or two,” she said casually and handed a glass to Sirius. “And how are you doing, Severus?”

He said nothing, but took the drink that had been served for her and walked away. “What are you here about?”

“The new law,” she answered. “There are some things that have me very concerned.”

“And that would be?” he asked her.

“I know for a fact that they are not sending them over to Azkaban,” she told him. “Harry told me as much. They aren’t killing them because that takes time and people would have spilled something about it by now. No, they are being kept someplace, and I personally can only think of one location that can handle the security needed.” She looked over to Sirius who was now catching on to what she was saying.

“Here?” he whispered.

She nodded. “It’s the only place that makes sense.” She looked over to Severus. “Where are they on the school grounds?”

“I cannot tell you,” he replied and ended up sighing heavily. “I took an oath. Besides they would call me a traitor if I did as much.”

Hermione thought over what to do next and could only come up with one answer. “Do you have any teaching jobs open? I find myself becoming bored training to be an unspeakable.”

“I’m sure,” Severus said sourly. “Minerva just retired, but we already have filled the position.” He smiled harshly. “There is only one position open at the moment and I fear you are far overqualified for it.”

“I’ll take it!” she snapped, walking over to him.

“No,” Severus said. “You are not going to take that job.” He rolled his eyes and muttered, “I’ll give you the first and second year potions classes.” He looked over to her and said, “I hope you know what you are getting yourself into.”

“Most probably not,” she said, shaking his hand. “Now pour me a drink! We need to celebrate. I just got a new job!”

Snape glared at her even as Sirius poured her the drink, handing it over to her. “Are you sure this is what you want to do?” he asked.

“No,” she replied, downing the drink quickly and wincing. “But I’m certain it is what I need to do.”
