The Start of a Lifetime

The Start of a Lifetime

A young boy stood on the stairs leading up to a great castle, waiting with others his age to be let in. He could hardly believe he was standing here. He knew that this was somewhere he belonged and that all of these others were the same as him. They were going to be fellow student in this school. Not just any school either, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and he was a wizard.

A couple stairs in front of him and to the right stood a small witch with soft brown hair hanging down to her shoulder blades. She stood with another witch with short blonde hair. He saw her turn toward her friend and laugh and couldn’t help himself thinking that she had a great smile, almost warming. He couldn’t help but smile as her watched her.

There was a loud creak in the oversized wood door to the castle as it began to swing open both its doors and all of the students began to file in and up the grand staircase in front of them. At the top of the stairs stood a witch with black hair streaked with gray walked out the door. She was dressed in a floor length dark green velvet robe over a long black dress with a ornate broche pinned at her neck, a black wide brimmed hat with a crooked point, a small green band around the crown of her head, where is sat askew, and a feather sticking up from it. She placed the tip of the wand she was holding to her throat and began to speak. “Attention all new first year students, I am Professor McGonagall. Welcome to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In a moment I will be leading you into the Great Hall where you all will be sorted into your respectable houses. Once your name is called you with come sit on the stool in front of you to be sorted. Once sorted, you will be joining your new housemates at their tables. Please form two lines and we’ll get moving then.”

All of the student s began to squish together and for two lines. Ted fell in line next to a tall thin boy with red messy hair. He turned to him, extended his hand and smiled. “Hello, Arthur Weasley.”

Ted grasped his hand, “Ted Tonks. How are you?”

“Really great, I am pretty sure that I will be sorted to Gryffindor. What about you?” Arthur asked.

“Um, not really sure, but wherever I am I will try to make the rest of it.” Ted tried to seem to look like he knew what he was talking about. In fact he wasn’t sure what Arthur meant at all. At the moment they started moving up the stairs he began to smell something intoxicating, almost like milk and honey. He looked forward to see where the scent was coming from. Right in front of him stood that same girl with the warm smile that had caught his attention before. He leaned towards Arthur and gave him a nudge with his elbow. “Who is the girl in front of me?” he whispered

Arthur turned to see who his was talking about. He looked at Ted and saw something in his eyes. “That would be Andromeda Black of the infamous House of Black. If she is anything like her family she would be someone to stay away from.” He saw that this got Ted’s attention causing him to look at him confused. “Let’s just say they are not the nicest family around.”

Ted nodded but turned to continue to look at Andromeda. “Then I hope she is nothing like her family.” He said in a low voice.

Ted had come into charms class and took his normal seat on the right hand side of the classroom next to Arthur. As he sat down he gave Arthur a curious look. “Hey Artie, how was flying class?” He asked Arthur, even though by the looks of the bandages around his friends head, it probably hadn’t gone as planned.

“Great! It was a smooth take off, an easy flight, and a gentle landing. One of the best flights I have ever had according to Hooch. Arthur said beamingly.

“Uh, then what’s with the bandages?” Ted asking, looking confused at him. ‘Maybe he hit his head too hard and forgot’ Ted thought.

“Oh, that.” Arthur said as his ears and cheeks started to turn a light shade of crimson. He brushed his fingers across the part of the bandage that touched his forehead. “Well I saw an angel walking up the stairs past me and I kind of lost my footing and tripped … down the rest of the stairs. It was well worth it though. She smiled at me before I fell and then was over me when I reached the bottom. She wanted to know f I was alright. She had the most beautiful eyes, full of loving care, and when I looked into them all of my pain just went away.” Arthur had his head in his hands and was smiling and looking off into the distance.

Ted smirked at Arthur. “Does this angel have a name?”

Arthur looked as if a smile had permanently attached to his face and a dreamy looked glazed over his eyes. “Molly.”

A moment later, Ted rolled his eyes and caught a glimpse of Andromeda walking through the door. He felt his face flush with warmth and had a pretty good idea that he was wearing that same glazed over look that Arthur had on. She was his angel. He knew what Arthur had said about her family and all, but how could someone with a face like hers and a smile that light up the room be anything but good. He could not help but look at her.

“He’s looking at you again.” The blonde haired girl, who sat next to her, said to Andromeda.

“Oh Alison please.” Andromeda said to her friend, who was now using a small mirror to look over her shoulder at Ted and Arthur. “Which one is looking?” Andromeda asked curiously. ‘Please, let it be Ted.’ She wished as she looked at her friend hopefully.

“Well the red headed one has glazed over eyes and looking towards the ceiling. Yep it looks like it is Ted then.” Alison could see the slight triumph in Andromeda’s face. “Why don’t you just go talk to him? You seem to like him and obviously he likes you.”

“You don’t exactly know that.” Andromeda said, biting her nails lightly.

“Come on Andromeda. He had been staring at you in all of our class together all year. I even saw him notice you when we were in line to be sorted last year. Just talk to him.” Alison said.

“I don’t know. I really want him to talk to me first.” Andromeda was so nervous that she hadn’t realized she was playing with her fingers.

“Ok fine. At least turn around and smile at the boy. Kind of letting him know there’s hope. You wouldn’t want to go another summer unknowing if he was thinking of you when you obviously were.” Alison was trying to edge her friend into doing something to help speed this possible relationship up. All year Alison had taken out her mirror in whatever classes they had with Ted to check to make sure he was looking for Andromeda.

Alison’s words lit a fire in Andromeda though. It was almost summer break and even though she did want Ted to make the first move she didn’t want him to lose interest in her. “Maybe a smile wouldn’t hurt.”

Ted was watching her side profile and noticed that she was smiling. He watched as her face turned towards her friend and that they were in some kind of conversation but he didn’t care cause even her hair was beautiful to watch how it softly moved. He saw her head turn back from their conversation but to his surprise her head didn’t stop when she faced front. She was turning around. He should have looked away faster but he knew that he’d been caught and he felt his face turning a crimson color.

Arthur elbowed Ted. “Mate she is looking at you. You should look. She might be confused or something.” Arthur saw Andromeda actually looking a little sad at the fact she didn’t meet Ted’s gaze.

Ted looked at Arthur and all he did was nod in the direction of the girl he had being staring at the last two years. Ted took a deep breath and looked in Andromeda’s direction. She was still looking at him. Her face lit up when he met her eyes. She was smiling so brightly at him that he could hardly believe it. He felt an open mouth smile creep across his face as well. She was finally looking at him smiling. He could even see her blushing at him. She looked like she was about to say something to him when her attention was drawn by Professor Trenell walking into the classroom, down the isle and to the front of the room. Before she turned around to pay attention she met his eyes and gave him a smiling nod. Right then and there he knew he wanted her to be his and began to think of ways to try and woe her.

“Oh come off it now Andromeda! That is not even a real excuse.” Alison lay across the foot of Andromeda’s bed, flipping through the latest edition of Potions Weekly.

Andromeda sat at her vanity brushing her hair as she was talking to her friend. She stopped brushing her hair, putting her brush down and turned towards the bed. “It’s a very valid excuse!” she exclaimed. “Don’t you think I know what they say about me behind my back? ‘She’s of the House of Black. If she is anything like her sister, stay away from her.’ Half the boys in this school won’t even look at me, why would he. Someone will warn him and he’ll run.” Andromeda turned back to stare into the mirror sadly and continue her brushing.

“Oh that’s rich Andromeda!” Alison said, rolling her eyes. “You think that he’s not going to like you because you’re ‘of the House of Black’?” Alison said with her head tilted sideways to see Andromeda in the mirror. “He obviously likes you. He can’t help but look at you and smile. I thought that we were going to show the Wizarding World that not everyone from this house, and yours as well, is not evil. Start with showing him who you are.

Andromeda looked in the mirror and met Alison’s gaze. “Maybe you are right.” She smiled. “He is rather adorable too.” Both girls laughed at that last statement and began to converse about normal topics of girls their age.

Thud! Ted’s head hit the table hard and he made a groan afterwards. His head had been down for a couple minutes before Arthur spoke up.

“How’s the head?” Arthur had said with slight sarcasm. “You alright mate?” he said after a couple seconds of silence.

Ted picked his head up enough to put a hand to his forehead and rub it. “Yeah, I was just thinking. I have a lot of stuff in my head.” Ted sighed. They were the same thoughts he had all year, Andromeda. He never could stop thinking about her.

Arthur knew he was constantly thinking about Andromeda and couldn’t understand why he would say anything to the girl. There were times he would see him staring in her direction and could see something in his eyes. Arthur took a deep breath. “Why don’t you just talk to her? I can see in your face how you feel about her, anyone can.”

“I can’t just go and talk to her though. It’s not that I don’t want to, but I can’t” He said as he hung his head down. “I picture it over and over again and then when I see that there might be a moment, I choke.” He looked up to Arthur. “I tried again yesterday and I sounded like some sort of stuttering dunderhead. ‘Ah, hey, hi, And…, And…,’ Real smooth right.” Ted brought his hand to lightly hit his forehead.

Arthur couldn’t help but smile though. “I don’t think that matters that much. Molly tells me that she finds it endearing.”

“Yeah, but you didn’t have to approach Molly. She came to you after you fell down the stairs.” Ted saw Arthur blush. “Honestly if some force doesn’t step in and help me out too, Andromeda might be thirty before she will know how much I really like her.”

“Well that’s not too bad. As the Muggles say, ‘Better sooner than never.’ Right?” Arthur said beaming.

Ted smirked while trying not to laugh at Arthur’s combination of the two sayings. “Yeah Artie, something like that, but we have to get going to class. I don’t think Madame Hooch will be happy if your are late again.” Ted closed and packed his books.

“Yeah, you’re right.” Arthur said as they walked out of the library. “I don’t think that McGonagall would like you sneaking in, either.”

The boys parted ways and headed to their classes. The sound of clicking heels came from behind the bookcase near where the boys had been studying. A young girl with wild black hair came from behind it and watched the boys walk away. “Hmmm, well isn’t this a delicious little tidbit of information. It seems that our little Andromeda has a boyfriend. I’ll have to watch this closely now.” She said.

Just then a second figure came from behind the bookcase. He was tall with long dark hair with a rugged demeanor about him. “This is interesting. But for now Bella, my love,” he said lovingly as he grasped her wrist, pulling her back behind the bookcase, “let’s continue with they study that we had started. Anatomy.” He gave her a wry smile as he entwined his arms around her waist and pushing her back against the shelves, causing her gasp slight as he closed his mouth around hers.
