Happy Birthday Harry

Hermione stood before the Veil deep within the Department of Mysteries. Her hands shook slightly with her excitement over what she was about to do. She was going to try to bring Sirius back from the Veil. It had taken 3 years of research and looking in pensieves of memories from the day he went in to discover what spell had been used to push him in. If it had been Avada Kedavra, she would never have succeeded. She got lucky, it was a stun spell. Then she had to search ancient and sometimes forbidden tombs for the exact method to use to bring him back.

Nobody had attempted this spell in over a thousand years. So the details were a little sketchy. But she was the brightest witch of her age for a reason. She found what countless others hadn’t. The hardest part of the whole process was keeping it all from Harry and Ron. Harry would have been devastated if he had found out and gotten his hopes up, only to have it fail. Ron simply couldn’t keep his mouth shut for two seconds.

Her second biggest problem was convincing Kingsley to allow her to do this. He wasn’t too keen to have the girl put her life in danger for something that may or may not work, and if it failed, would most likely kill her. He finally gave in when she agreed to allow him to monitor her vitals from outside the locked room.

Now she stood here, breathing deeply to prepare herself for the amount of magic she knew would be needed. After one final breath she began the spell.

Outside the room, Kingsley stood there, watching her vital signs like a hawk. He knew from her research at what point something had gone wrong. He was prepared for the worst. Her vitals for the moment only showed a massive strain though, so he allowed himself to breathe a little while. After what seem like an eternity of worry, her vitals suddenly spiked and she became unconscious. He yelled at the nearby Aurors to go get medical attention while he tried to break down the door.
Several attempts later with no success, he was about to blast the door open when it suddenly open from the inside and out walked Sirius Black, carrying Hermione in his arms.

An hour later, after being checked by several healers and cleared by them, the trio sat in Kingsley’s office. He poured tea while Hermione explained what happened in the Veil room. To his credit, Sirius sat silent during her story. He looked different than the man she remembered. He no longer looked brooding like when he had been confined to headquarters, nor jovial like he was in his youth. He seemed to be a little distant. She suspected it was a result of being in the Veil. When he looked at her, she knew what he wanted.

“Ask them Sirius. Whatever you wish to know.” She said to him.

“How long have I been in... there?” he asked, hesitating when referring to the Veil.

“Five years, six months.” She decided that short; to the point answers would be best.

“Voldemort?” he spat out.

“Dead. Harry killed him at the final battle at Hogwarts.”

“Bellatrix?”

“Also dead. Mrs. Weasley killed her when she attacked Ginny.”

“Remind me to thank her. What of Dumbledore?”

“Dumbledore…” she hesitated at his name.

“How did he die?” correctly guessing her reason for hesitating.

“Snape. He did it on Dumbledore's orders. It was planned from the beginning of my sixth year.”

“Remus?”

“Remus and his wife and son are fine. They live near Hogsmeade in a little cottage.”

“Remus is married? To who? A son?”

“He married you cousin, Tonks. They named their son Teddy after her father. He was killed by Death Eaters.”

“Harry?” he asked finally, seeming afraid of the answer.

“Harry made it through. He married Ginny and they have a son. James Harry Potter. They are expecting their second child in
January.”

“Am I still a convict?” he asked, turning to Kingsley now.

“No. Your name was cleared last year by me. You are now on the wall of heroes in Hogwarts, along with all those who fought for
the light. You are a free man.”

“Sirius, would you like to go see Harry? I know he would wish to see you.” Hermione asked.

“Yes, I would.”

“You will need to come see me within the next week Sirius. I have questions for you about the veil that I would appreciate
your answers to. “

“I will make it a point to come see you soon.” He replied.

“Enjoy your freedom Sirius. You have more than earned it.”

Hermione led him out of the ministry of magic to Muggle London. There she apparated him to Godric’s Hollow. He seemed very
tense.

“Sirius, if you wish to wait, we can. I know this is a lot to take in all at once. You don’t have to do this. I never told him what I planned to do. He knows nothing of your return.”

“You didn’t want to disappoint him did you?” he guessed accurately again.

“No I didn’t. I couldn’t bear for him to go through losing you twice. The first time nearly destroyed him.”

“I need to do this.” He finally replied.

“As you wish.” She led the way to the door and walked in. She had told everyone to gather at Harry’s tonight. She never told them why. All she had said when questioned was that it would either be really good news, or really bad news, and she wouldn’t know until she arrived there tonight.

She quietly told him to wait in the kitchen for a moment while she prepared everyone. She calmly walked into the living room where everyone was gathered talking.

“Hermione, what is going on? You told everyone you had big news, but wouldn’t tell us what it was about.” Harry said upon seeing her in the doorway.

“Rather than tell you what it is, I would rather show you. Please Ginny, sit down. You too Harry. This is very big.”

As they sat down, looking very confused at her odd behavior, Hermione went back into the kitchen and motioned for Sirius to
follow her. She walked to the doorway, and then stepped aside for everyone to see her news.

When Sirius walked into the room, everyone went completely silent and stared at him in shock.

“Surprise Harry, Happy Birthday.” Hermione said quietly.
