Love of a Phoenix
Chapter 1
Hermione Granger sat on the train to Hogwarts. She was sharing a compartment with her friends Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley and Ron’s sister, Ginny. Harry, Hermione, and Ron were beginning their seventh and final year at Hogwarts, while Ginny was beginning her sixth.. The year before Voldemort had launched two attacks that had killed all but Ginny and Ron of the Weasley family, as well as the remaining members of Hermione’s family.
Professor Snape had tried to get back to the Order of the Phoenix headquarters to warn the Order, but was too late. Ron and Ginny were now under the custody of Albus and Minerva. Hermione, since she was of age, didn’t need a guardian, but stayed at the castle over the summer with Ron and Ginny, as well as Harry.
“I can’t wait for Quidditch to start.” Ron said with a smile.
“I know. I also can’t wait to see what dirty tricks Malfoy is going to pull this year.” Harry added.
“Is that all you guys ever think about?” Ginny asked.
“Come on Ginny, are you telling me you aren’t looking foreword to the new season? You’re our best chaser.” Ron replied.
“Of course I’m looking foreword to it, but even I think of other things besides Quidditch.” Ginny said.
Hermione just shook her head and chuckled as she continued to stare out the window. It was the same thing every year. The boys talked endlessly about Quidditch. Ginny just sighed and pulled out a book. As Hermione watched the landscape pass by, her thoughts continued to wander.
‘I can feel it growing stronger. What am I going to do? I have to control it or else it could hurt those I love.’ She thought.
Hermione Granger wasn’t just a normal muggle born witch. She was in fact hiding a secret, that if it was discovered by Voldemort, could cause him to come after not only herself, but those she loved. She was hiding a dark family secret, that she prayed her friends and the Order would not discover.
A few hours later, the train pulled into Hogsmeade station. Hermione followed her friends off the train and into the waiting carriages. She remained quiet as they reached the castle and headed for the Great Hall for the Welcoming Feast.
“Mione, what’s wrong?” Harry asked.
“Huh? Nothing.” Hermione answered.
“You’ve been unusually quiet. Not just on the carriage ride, but on the train as well. What’s up girl?” Ginny added.
“I’ve just been thinking. It’s no big deal guys. I promise.” Hermione answered, hoping to reassure them.
The four friends took their seats at Gryffindor table. Hermione looked around. She quickly spotted Draco Malfoy and his lapdogs, Crabbe and Goyle. They were talking quietly and looking menacingly over at them.
‘Control Hermione. Don’t lose it now.’ Hermione thought as she felt her blood beginning to boil.
Just then, Minerva McGonagall led in the first years. Her thoughts were instantly on focusing on the sorting. She just rolled her eyes as Ron quietly complained about starving to death if the sorting didn’t finish soon. After the sorting, Albus rose to his feet. The hall fell silent.
“Welcome one and all to a new year here at Hogwarts. First I would like to welcome back as our Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor R.J. Lupin.” The hall was filled with claps and cheers for the return of Remus. “The Forbidden forest is still off limits to all students. On Halloween I have decided to hold a masquerade ball open to all students. Third years and above will be allowed to get their costumes from Hogsmeade, the younger students will need to consult with their head of house to create their costumes. Finally, remember this. These are dark times we now find ourselves. We must remain united as one. Now, tuck in.” Albus announced.
The food appeared and students and teachers alike began their meal. Up at the staff table, Severus Snape remained quiet and let his eyes roam across the hall. As his eyes fell on the Gryffindor table, his eyes instantly fell on Hermione Granger. He covertly studied her.
‘There’s something different about her, but what? She’s not just any witch. Even Voldemort knows there’s something different about her. Perhaps I should speak with Dumbledore about it this evening.’ Severus thought as he continued eating.

After dinner, Severus sat in Albus’s office with the Headmaster and Minerva. He took a deep breath and began speaking.
“Albus, Minerva, I think there is more to Miss Granger than we all know. Even Voldemort knows this, that’s why he killed every last member of her family but her. Do either of you know anything about her?” Severus explained.
“I’m afraid not my boy. It’s true, that I have noticed she’s different, but that is all. Minerva?” Albus said.
“I don’t know of anything. Hermione hasn’t said anything about her family. Even before the attack she didn’t talk about them except that her parents were dentists.” Minerva replied.
“I think we need to watch her closely. I saw at dinner how Draco Malfoy and the other Slytherins were looking at her. I fear that Voldemort has something planned and will be using Draco, Goyle, Crabbe, and Pansy to carry it out.” Severus said.
“Very well. I will have the other professors keep a close eye on her. I assume you will be doing so as well?” Albus questioned.
“Yes sir. Perhaps, she could become my assistant or something. If Voldemort says anything, I will simply tell him that you made me take her on.” Severus answered.
“That will work. Inform Hermione tomorrow after potions class.” Albus instructed.
Severus nodded. He then got to his feet and exited the office. Instead of heading straight to his office, he went for a walk on the grounds. As he neared the lake, he caught sight of none other than, Hermione Granger sitting at the lake’s edge. He quietly hid behind a tree and listened as she began talking.
“What am I going to do? I can’t control this. I don’t know what to do. Oh mother, why didn’t you train me better? If you had, then perhaps I wouldn’t be placing those I love in danger.” Hermione said to the star filled sky.
She stood up and retreated back to the castle. Severus stepped out from behind the tree and watched the young woman disappear into the shadows.
“Just what are you Hermione Granger?” He whispered.
