Back To Me

A Change of Plans

“Run by me one more time how the fuck this could have happened?” Severus spat, fear and anger apparent in his dark eyes.

“I told you, Ron never uses contraceptive, but he knows I do, so he must have tampered with mine,” Hermione replied, tears threatening to form. “It’s a bloody good thing that you do, or this would be a right pickle of a mess.”

“And you don’t think that this is a right pickle of a mess? You’re still leaving him, aren’t you?”

Hermione’s face fell.

“Hermione, tell me you aren’t staying with him,” he pleaded, hurt betraying his obsidian eyes.

“Severus, I don’t know now,” Hermione said honestly. “This changes everything.”

“Does it change how you feel about me?” Severus asked, afraid of what the answer could be.

“Of course it doesn’t,” Hermione said, throwing her arms around his neck, holding him tightly.

“Then leave him. Leave him and come with me,” Severus begged, hating the traitorous tears that were beginning to form.

“And what about the baby?” Hermione asked, holding him at arms length “It’s Ron’s child.”

“Maybe he doesn’t have to know about it,” Severus said.

“What, you’re just going to raise another man’s child as your own?” Hermione asked him.

“Well, no,” Severus replied, turning away from her. “I have potion that can eliminate this problem. We can start fresh, have our own child, when we are ready to.”

“Severus, no! I could never do that! The child is innocent, how can you ask me to kill it?”

Severus felt a lump rise in his throat.

“I know. You’re right, it would be a terrible thing to do, but I just want to be with you, no matter what the cost. I can’t bear to lose you. Tell me, Hermione how can I let you go? How can I let you go when there is still so much I want to share with you? How can I let you go when I have only just…” Severus said, ignoring the tear that was now sliding down his cheek.

“I can’t punish this child for my mistakes,” Hermione said, tears sliding from her own eyes.

“Is that what this means to you?” Severus said. “Am I just a mistake you made?”

“You know that is not what I am talking about,” Hermione said, wiping her cheek with the back of her hand. “I should have ended things with Ron before I got involved with you. You know that I love you and I could never view what we have as a mistake.”

“What if we run away together? What if we raise the child as ours? Weasley will never have to know.”

“You know we can’t do that, Severus. When the child is born, his or her name will be down in the books as Weasley, not Snape, and then he would hunt us down until he found us and demand his rights as the father, and there would be nothing we could do to stop him.”

Severus’ face fell.

“What if we just give the child to Weasley? Then he would have the child he wants so desperately that he resorted to deception to get,”

“I couldn’t abandon my child, Severus,” Hermione said quietly.

“Then stay with me, and we can share the child with Weasley. Plenty of people do it, we could make it work,” Severus pleaded.

“And raise a child in a broken home? He or she would be the subject of ridicule, and we would be to blame.”

Severus dropped his head in defeat.

“You’re only giving him what he wants, you know. He knows about us, and this is his solution to keep you with him. By staying with him, you are only rewarding what he has done to you, to us,” Severus said angrily.

“What are you talking about? What makes you think he knows about us?” Hermione asked, the color draining from her face.

“This,” Severus said, drawing a piece of parchment from his pocket.

I know what you are up to, you lousy git. You stay away from us. She is mine, and I will do whatever it takes to keep her as such.

Hermione stared at the parchment. Tears spilled freely down her cheeks.

“Well I suppose that’s it, then,” Hermione said, letting the parchment fall to the floor.

“So Weasley wins?” Severus asked, his voice wavering.

“I’m so sorry, Severus,” Hermione said, daring to look into his eyes. “You have to understand that. You have to know that you will always be the love of my life. You have to know that I will never love him like I love you.”

“And yet you are choosing him,” Severus said quietly.

“Severus, please---” Hermione said, reaching out to him.

“Just go,” Severus said coldly. “It seems you have a wedding to plan.”

“Severus, please. Don’t be like this,” Hermione said, crying.

“I said, go,” Severus said, grabbing her by the shoulder.

He dragged her to the door, fighting back his own tears.

He looked at her one last time, feeling his heart breaking as he opened the door to his flat.

“I love you,” she sobbed as he shoved her out the door and slammed it shut.

He collapsed on the rug by the hearth, crying until he could no longer breathe.

Well he certainly wasn’t going to stick around and watch this pathetic charade. He hurriedly packed a suitcase and apparated away.

Hermione stared at the cobblestone street. How had it come to this? The tiny life that was now growing inside her was supposed to be a blessing, and instead, it felt like a curse.

Full of guilt and remorse, she headed back to her flat, unsurprised to find Ron waiting there for her.

“You won your little game,” she said to him, full of resentment.

“So, you’re pregnant, then? We’re going to be so happy together, you know,” Ron said, smiling at her.

Hermione glared at him.

“Oh, now, don’t be that way,” Ron said. “It won’t do for the baby for its mother to be in such a state. Besides, you’re going to be such a beautiful bride, Hermione. You just wait and see.”

“I am only doing this for the baby,” Hermione said. “I don’t love you like I love him.”

“Well it seems I have a very long time to change your mind about that, doesn’t it?” Ron said, winking at her.

Hermione felt like she might vomit.

A/N:This came to me one day, and I just could not get it out of my head. My life is now much more full than it was before. For starters, I now have a job, so that takes up a good portion of my days so you cannot expect rapid fire updates. I am definitely going to see this one through, though, and I have it planned ahead by several chapters.
