Prologue

"Miss Granger! Detention!" Snape snarled from his desk.

Hermione stared up at him in shock. "But..."

"I have told you before about helping Mr. Longbottom," he growled. "You refuse to listen. You will serve detention for your actions. See me after class to discuss the terms."

The young Muggle-born glared at her Potions teacher. She had felt bad for Neville. She knew the poor boy was struggling in class, especially this particular class. She couldn't help but want to help him. Besides, the threat of Snape giving Neville's toad a poison made Hermione cringe. It wasn't the animal's fault...

Once class was over, she approached the teacher's desk and waited patiently for him to say something. For a moment, he kept his head down, shuffling through the papers. She watched him, expecting him to say something. When he didn't, she cleared her throat. Perhaps he didn't know she was there?

"I am perfectly aware of your presence, Miss Granger," he said, continuing to go through the papers, not looking at her.

This disgruntled her. "Professor, if I may be so bold, I have another class to attend," she told him. "I do not wish to be late."

"And lose more points for your House?" he suggested. Now, he did look at her and fixed her with a tight-lipped grin. "That would be devastating."

She didn't like the look in his eyes. The expression on his face bode ill. He was purposely keeping her back. Was this his sick form of punishment for simply helping a classmate?

"You will come to my office Thursday night, Miss Granger, at 7 o'clock," he told her.

"But, Thursday is Halloween!" she protested.

He nodded. "It's a shame you'll have to miss out on the big Halloween feast," he taunted. "And Professor Dumbledore was planning some sort of special treat for all the students... Tut, tut. Guess you'll just be missing out."

She turned and stormed from the classroom. She had never been more furious in her life! She was going to miss the Halloween feast, one of her favourite feasts, because of some prick of a teacher!

She slammed her books onto her desk in Arithmancy. She heard Malfoy snicker, but she ignored him. She was too furious to worry over any other pricks.

"Are you quite all right, Miss Granger?" Professor Vector inquired.

Hermione sighed, "Yes, Professor. I apologize. I'm just having a rough day."

"Understandable," the professor sympathized. "Now, as I was saying before, todays task will be a difficult one. So, we shall pair up. I have all ready arranged who will be paired with whom. You will find the name of your partner on a bit of parchment on your desk. I would like you to find your partner and begin today's work."

Hermione sat down and began sorting through her school bag. She took out her text, parchment, quill and ink, and began to start her work.

"Granger," drawled an all-too-familiar voice.

The Gryffindor slowly looked up into the stormy eyes of Draco Malfoy. He smirked at her. "I'm your partner."

Great. This day was just getting better and better.
