Confidence
Chapter one
A hush fell over the Great Hall as the door opened. No one could believe their eyes as Hermione Granger entered, fingers intertwined with those of none other than Draco Malfoy. They looked stunning; maybe it was the almost tangible aura of confidence that surrounded them.
Hermione looked around the hall, normally messy curls pulled into a still slightly messy knot under her left ear, small tendrils escaping to frame her heart-shaped face. Delicate gold chandelier earrings hung from her lobes, and thin gold bangles tinkled on her slender wrists. She stepped forward slowly; the thigh high slit in her deep brown silk sheath giving a glimpse of strappy gold stilettos and long, toned legs. She smiled serenely, knowing that, by the looks on the faces around her, she had just shattered everyone’s assumption that she would always just be a small, mousy bookworm.
She turned to Draco, who looked equally amazing in perfectly tailored robes the same color as her dress, and asked him softly, almost shyly, if he would like to dance, an amused look dancing in her warm, amber eyes. He nodded curtly, wrapping his arms around her slender waist, placing a large, pale hand just above her shapely bum.
Nodding at the Headmaster, he signaled that they were ready for the opening dance of the Graduation Ball. The soft strains of a guitar reached their ears, and Draco’s eyes widened in shock, as he had been expecting the customary waltz.
Hermione looked up into his startled silver eyes, her full, pink lips turning up in a smile. “I asked the Headmaster if he wouldn’t mind doing me a favor, as I am the class Valedictorian.”
“I see,” said Draco, starting to smile back. “Don’t forget, Granger, that I was only a few tenths of a grade point behind you, so don’t get too cocky about being Valedictorian.” He swayed slowly with her to the music playing, and tilted his head a little. “What on earth is this song?”
Blushing a little, Hermione laid her head on his chest. “It’s a muggle love song. It’s called ‘For You I Will (Confidence), it’s by someone called Teddy Geiger.”
“I like it,” Draco stated simply, tightening his grip on her waist to pull her closer.
“Hermione Jane Granger!” someone yelled from behind them. “What the bloody hell do you think that you are doing?”
Hermione stiffened and pulled away from Draco, turning to face the person berating her with a looked of controlled fury.
“Dancing,” she replied firmly, trying not to smirk as Ron Weasley’s face turned as red as his hair.
“With the enemy!” he yelled, waving his arms around wildly.
Hermione’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “Ronald Billius Weasley, if memory serves correctly, we have no enemy. Voldemort was defeated last year, as attested to by the notable absence of our best friend, or have you forgotten how he died? All Deatheaters have been given the kiss or are rotting away in Azkaban, so I see no enemy here.”
Ron at least had the decency to look mildly ashamed of himself. “I’m sorry ‘Mione, I just…He’s been so mean to you. And everyone knows you and I were meant to be…”
Hermione’s bland smile showed her distaste at that sentiment. “Whenever you decided that it was time? When you decided to pull your head out of your arse? When you had exhausted every other option and were STUCK with me?” She snarled. “I don’t have time for that or for you at this moment.”
That being said, she turned back to Draco, who wrapped his arms around her tightly and planted a small kiss on her forehead. “Something you didn’t understand, Weasel?” he drawled over Hermione’s bare shoulder, glaring at the man that had dared to upset this goddess.
Ron shook his head and stomped off, looking rather put out, and grumbling about little white ferrets.
Hermione turned her wide, expressive eyes to Draco and smiled softly, her heart thumping wildly when he returned a genuine, radiant smile.
“Thank you, Draco, for standing up for me.”
“Hermione, I told you it was never a problem.”
He pulled her close, whispering softly past her ear, “For you I will.”
