Dark Light Life
Chapter 1
Hermione Jane Granger stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. Her long hair was straight and seemed to be getting darker as the week progressed and now was a rich dark chocolate color. The changes had started a few days before her 17th birthday and had progressed rapidly. Two days before, Hermione had awoken with a terrible headache and stumbled into her small bathroom. The sight that met her eyes made her squeak in shock. Her bushy hair, once down to her shoulders, now hung down to the middle of her back. As the days progressed, her body changed even more. Her eyes seemed to shift colors and what was once brown was not a shining leaf green. Hermione’s clothing didn’t fit as they should as she seemed to gain a few inches around the bust and hips. No longer was her body that of a boys. At 5’7” she was tall but until now looked kind of like a mop that had been left in the corner. All of these changes had started to frighten her but her parents didn’t seem to notice.
Hermione awoke the day of her birthday and skipped into her bathroom to see what changes had occurred during the night. Her now straight and dark hair was pulled back into a braid and makeup was lightly applied to her now clear skin. Hermione got dressed in a white sundress with white leather sandals and wandered down the steps and into her homes living room. Al Granger looked up at his daughter and gave a small smile. In his eyes an emotion that Hermoine couldn‘t understand lingered.
"Hermione! Happy birthday, Bee Spit.” Mr. Granger said with a wider smile than before.
“Father! I hate it when you call me that.” Hermione grimaced at the name. He couldn’t be normal and call her honey. No he had to call her Bee Spit.
Leah Granger looked up at her husband’s statement and pulled her daughter into the kitchen for a homemade birthday breakfast.
“Darling why don’t you go and sit down at the table. I will have some waffles and strawberry syrup out in a moment. Do you want bacon with that?”
“Yeah, and some eggs to. Thanks” Hermione replied
On the table two letters sat labeled to Hermione. Hermione picked up the first and opened it. Inside was her list of items for the coming year as well as a class list. In the second envelope lay a shiny badge with the words Head Girl inscribed into it. Hermione squealed as she pulled it out to show her parents. After a round of laughing and congratulations Hermoine pulled out the letter.
Dear Miss Granger,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected to be this years Head Girl. This is a huge responsibility that I hope that you don’t take lightly. There will be a meeting on the Hogwarts Express to discuss the duties that you and the Head Boy will share. Thank you and congratulations once again on the position.

After a hearty breakfast, Hermione’s parents pulled out three wrapped packages. The first one that she reached for had silver wrapping paper with holographic birthday cakes on it. Inside was a large wooden Box about the size of a large book. Hermione opened it up but nothing was inside. It was carved with Celtic knot patterns and made of a rich cherry wood. Hermoine looked up at her parents for an explanation.
“That is a Tome Caller. All you have to do is name a book that you own and it will appear in there when you open it. Your mother and I know that you carry around some pretty heavy text Books in your bag and this will severely lighten the load.” Al Granger explained.
Hermione’s smile almost split her face in half as she tried it out. “Transfiguration and its Properties!” When she opened the wood, the large book was laying inside. Hermione took it out and smiled. She put it back inside and closed the wooden box. When the lid was lifted the book was gone.
The second package was handed to her. It was wrapped in red paper and about the same length and width as her fore arm. Inside was a black case. When Hermione opened it she found a beautiful ostrich feather quill. The plumed feather was exaggerated and the color of soft beach sand. The inscription in the inside of the case informed her that it would never run out of ink once it was dipped into the color of her choice.
The third package was a bit larger. Hermione gasped as she lifted the blue cloth off of a cage about half the size of the table. Inside was what looked like a miniature dragon. At the sudden light, it scurried towards the back. The mini dragon had green scales covering it but on its head and wings silver scales could be seen making it shine. Bright yellow eyes shone out at Hermione.
“Mom, Dad! Where did you get this? I don’t think that I can take it to school with me.” Hermoine looked saddened by the prospect. Since her cat had died over the summer, Hermoine had dreaded going to Hogwarts with out her most loving friend.
Leah Granger laughed. “Honey it’s ok. This is a gift from Dumbledore and Hagrid. One was given to the Head Boy as well. You are allowed to take him with you to school. It is a Trill Dragon. It will only get about the size of a German Sheppard dog and can‘t breathe fire or anything like that. It will guard your room for you.”
Hermione was relieved. “How did you guys get the other two things?”
Mr. Granger smiled and answered. “We owled your teachers and sent them money with requests. They found what we were looking for.”
After a long playing session with the Trill Dragon now named Milo, Hermione breached a topic that had been worrying her.
“Mom, dad, why haven’t you said anything about these new looks I have been getting? I woke up and looked in the mirror and about had a heart attack!“
Leah sighed heavily and Al looked at the table top with a blank stare.
"I think now would be the time to tell you. I don’t want you to ask any questions until I am done. Ok?” At Hermione’s nod she continued. “You are not a muggle born witch. Your father and I adopted you when you were around two years old from the Wave A Magic Wand Orphanage. I wasn’t able to have children and your father and I wanted a baby so much. When we went to the orphanage we were going to get an infant but we saw a group of children playing in a room of to the side so we stopped to watch. You were sitting there with alphabet blocks and books making a town. We couldn’t keep our eyes off of you. I knew that you were special so we took you home with us. You were already named and the Adoption supervisor said that it wasn’t a good idea to change a name that you identified yourself with. I wanted to call you Rachel. We kept your name for your sake. The supervisor said that you had arrived there earlier that month with two other girls that were your siblings. They had already been adopted out. They gave me this though.” Mrs. Granger pulled out a picture of three toddlers sitting in a half circle. One of the babies’s had blonde hair that fell in messy waves. Another had red hair that puffed out in tight ringlets around her head. The last baby had straight chocolate brown hair.
“Mom if this is me then why did my appearance change so dramatically earlier this week?”
Leah Granger smiled at how well her daughter was taking this. “I am not sure. I know that 3 days after we had brought you home your appearance changed to match ours. I am guessing it was magic. You know that your father and I don’t understand much about the how’s and why’s of your talents.”
In a small file that her father handed to her was a birth certificate. It was made out to Hermione Jane Le Fey. Hermione’s eyes widened at this. *I am the descendent of the Le Fey Family?! Oh WOW!*
The names of her birth parents were Alexander Thomson Le Fey and Miranda Corinne Parkinson. Hermione’s eyes got even wider. *Oh MY GOD! I am a pureblood and related to Pansy, the Pug, Parkinson!* Her breathing was becoming erratic at this new information. On a small card were two names. Kristin Francis Phillips and Sasha Louise Stamford. Beside each name was a lock of hair. Blonde beside the name Kristin and Red beside the name Sasha. As Hermione was looking at the card and hair a small message appeared on the bottom quarter.
