Chapter One: Under the Bed
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Ginny trudged down the steep path, occasionally kicking at a loose stone to send it tumbling down the hill. Behind her the imposing castle was perfectly quiet. Indeed it was eerily so, although that was not unnatural. It was the first Hogsmeade weekend since term had begun and the entire population of the school seemed to have fled to the village.

Ginny let out a forlorn sigh. If it had been any other year then she would have been with them. This year was different however. It was Ginny’s seventh and the first after the end of the war, and as a consequence the young redhead had returned to Hogwarts without the great majority of her friends. In fact the only one of Ginny’s friends who had returned to the school was Luna, and since the blonde girl was now dating Dean she was spending the weekend with him in Hogsmeade.

A flicker of jealously burst to into life in the middle of Ginny’s chest – not because it was Dean that Luna was seeing but rather because Ginny knew that if circumstances had been different then she would have been down in Hogsmeade with her boyfriend instead of remaining behind alone in the castle. Harry, however, had hardly been able to wait a week after Ginny had returned to school before writing to her to break things off between them. The last she had heard he had been caught vigorously shagging Cho Chang in the showers at the Auror training academy in London. Ginny had always known that the pretty Chinese girl had been desperate to her claws back into the saviour of the magical world and apparently she had achieved it with only a little difficulty.

Determinedly, she pushed away thoughts of her ex and instead concentrated on negotiating the remainder of the path down to Hagrid’s hut on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. She had been sat in the library – bored and lonely – when it had dawned on her that there was every chance that there was at least one person still at Hogwarts who would be happy to see her. In her first year, Ginny had frequently slipped down to Hagrid’s and they had become fast friends as a consequence. Granted she had done so less after that first year when she had actually managed to make some friends, but Ginny still liked to think that she would be welcome.

The sound of cursing filled Ginny’s ears as she approached the edge of the pumpkin patch. The redhead stifled a giggle with her hand and wound her way through the growing crop to knock on the door.

“Comin’!” Hagrid called and a second later the door swung open. “Why it’s little Ginny Weasley!” he exclaimed. “Come in, come in. What are you doin’ here?”

Ginny stepped inside and Hagrid closed the door. “I just thought I’d come for a visit,” she said, holding out a hand to Fang who padded towards her. The giant dog sniffed her hand and then licked it – leaving behind a sizeable amount of drool as he did so.

“Aw, well that’s nice of yer. I was wonderin’ what had become o’ me favourite Gryffindor. Take a seat and I’ll get us some tea.”

He bustled away towards the stove, leaving Ginny to sit down at the massive wooden table. Designed for Hagrid, it dwarfed the seventh year, but luckily the half-giant kept some cushions on one side to boost her seat. Once settled, Ginny took off the satchel that she had brought with her from the library and set about scratching behind Fang’s ears. The huge mastiff immediately rolled his eyes and let out pleased rumble.

“I’ve bin meanin’ to talk ter yeh,” Hagrid said, returning to the table with a rather rumpled looking tablecloth. Spreading it out, he added, “Nuthin’ ter worry abou’. Jus’ wanted to discuss yer project fer this year. It looks promisin’.”

“Really?” Ginny asked excitedly, sitting up a little straighter as she did so.

Hagrid grinned at her. “I shouldn’t be tellin’ yer this but yer me best student – me very best student.”

Ginny felt a flush of pleasure and immediately ducked her head slightly in embarrassment. She was not used to such praise – not recently anyway. Lately she had been far more used to stern looks from her teachers because she had not done her homework, or at least not done it to her usual standard. Indeed the change in the standard of her work had altered so dramatically that McGonagall had actually gone so far as to inform her parents. That had resulted in a Howler from her mother, and then an equally stern letter that had told her in no uncertain terms to stop feeling sorry for herself because things had not worked out with Harry. Her mother, Ginny knew, had been far more willing to believe that Ginny had done something to ensure that Harry would break up with her than vice versa.

She sank her fingers into the thick fur of Fang’s coat, enjoying the feeling of the strong muscles of his back as she stroked him. His body was warm and the feel of it so near to her was comforting.

Hagrid had returned to preparing the tea. He placed several large scones on a plate and placed them on the table, along with a pair of teacups and some milk.

“Well, I’ll have a lot of time to work on it,” she said with a great sigh. Almost immediately she regretted speaking.

As he carried the steaming teapot to the table, Hagrid offered Ginny a weak, almost apologetic smile. “Oh… I’m sure Harry didn’ mean ter… You’ll be back t’gether before yer no it.”

Ginny shook her head slowly, refusing to look up. Hagrid had poured her a cup of tea, adding to it a large amount of milk and entirely too much sugar. As Ginny reached to take the cup, he covered her hand with his own considerably bigger one.

“He’ll come around. He’s not stupid an’ yer a beautiful girl, Ginny.”

Blushing slightly, Ginny gently pulled her hand out from under Hagrid’s. His touch had been warm and affectionate, and as much as Ginny had appreciated it, it had also made her… uncomfortable somehow. She covered the movement by taking hold of her cup in both hands and lifted it to her lips.

Fang shifted against her thigh. He moved so that his head resting on her lap and Ginny automatically went to stroke his head. She glanced down at the big dog, wondering whether it was possible that he had sensed her impending dark mood or understood what they had been talking about.

However, before she had chance to draw a conclusion, he moved again. Fang’s heavy paws suddenly landed on her lap as he jumped up. Startled, Ginny could do little but hastily put her hot cup down and push at his shoulders as she tried to make him get down. Fang’s weight overwhelmed her though. Even as Hagrid shouted, the big black dog began to frantically hump her legs.

“FANG!” Hagrid roared. “DOWN BOY!”

Pushing himself to his feet, the half-giant strode around the table. He grabbed the dog’s collar, and with a fantastic display of strength yanked the animal away from the young girl. Ginny fell off her seat as she scurried sideways, away from the dog which was still trying to reach her. Indeed, as her bottom collided with the floor and she fell into the basket that acted as Fang’s bed, the dog broke loose and bounded towards her. Ginny had a momentary glimpse of an enormous red cock jutting out from between a pair of swollen balls and then Hagrid was dragging his dog away again towards the door.

“Merlin’s nuts! I’m sorry, Ginny. Don’t yer worry – I’ll tie him up outside where he can’ bother yer.”

Ginny sat in shock for several seconds as Hagrid continued to wrestle the dog outside the door. Slowly, she became aware of the way in which her bottom was aching.

She blinked, listening to the sound of Hagrid scolding his pet. Putting a hand out, she moved to stand but then stopped as she felt something. Curiosity getting the better of her, the young redhead crawled out of the bed and pulled at the thick wad of paper that had been peeking out from under Fang’s bed.

It was a magazine of some sort, she realised, and then felt her eyes widen in astonishment as she read the title and saw the picture on the cover. Only the sound of Hagrid’s heavy steps approaching the entrance to hut could spur her into action, and without thinking she stuffed the magazine into her satchel which was sitting nearby.

NB: My first attempt at writing Hagrid… it was, er, interesting. Let me know whether it’s irritating and I’ll alter future parts depending on the results.
