Silver Anniversary

Harry watched with a somewhat forlorn expression as the Hogwarts Express puffed its way around a bend and out of sight. His head, of course, knew that his two sons and his niece would be fine, that they would never face the sort of dangers Hogwarts had thrown at him; Ginny had even echoed those thoughts. Neither, however, did anything to quell the feeling of apprehension that made his stomach tighten and his eyes ever-so-slightly water.

Ron’s voice broke him from his reverie. “Herm,” he was saying, “would you and Ginny mind taking the kids home on your own? Harry and I need to swing by Diagon Alley for a bit.”

We do? Harry thought, surprised. Ginny’s face was equally puzzled, but Hermione glanced back and forth between her husband and her brother-in-law (something Harry still had trouble getting used to), and she smiled, a knowing smile that made Harry even more perplexed.

“Of course not, love,” she agreed. “Gin, come back to our place, I took the day off today anyway……”

“Can I come, too, Da?” Hugo’s face beamed with excitement, and he was frankly bursting at the seams at the prospect of going to Diagon Alley with his father and uncle.

Ron shook his head, kindly. “I’m afraid not, little bloke. You Uncle Harry and I need to talk about a lot of things, and you’d be bored silly if you had to listen.”

Hugo’s lip trembled, but he was NOT about to cry in front of his family. “But, DA,” he whispered, “I don’t wanna spend the whole day with GIRLS.”

He’d obviously meant only Ron and Harry to hear, but Hermione’s ears were still as sharp as they’d ever been. “It’s okay, Hugo,” she said. “You can invite Seamus and Mickey over to play.

“And you two owe me big time,” she whispered to them both, but teasingly, “because when I think of what the house is going to be like after those three are done with it……”

Ginny kissed Harry, and now she had that same knowing look on her face as Hermione had. “I won’t wait up,” she told him. “Just keep an eye on my brother, will you? Don’t let him do anything silly.”

“Gin!” Ron protested. “I’m not……”

“Able to look after yourself, I know,” Ginny finished, even as Hermione and the children giggled. She kissed Ron on the cheek and said, “Off with you two, now!”

Harry and Ron watched their wives and children leave the platform, Hermione and Ginny with their heads bent together like two gossiping schoolgirls, Lily and Hugo bursting with excitement, but for obviously different reasons. Ron turned to Harry. “Apparate,” he said, “or just hoof it?”

“Hoof it,” Harry said firmly. He had never developed any pleasure in Apparating, and besides, he needed the exercise.
