Running Away

Prologue

“I’m leaving. I’m going to France, with my parents. They want me to get away for awhile. They think it will be good for me, with everything that has happened.” Hermione’s words were capped by a loud clap of lightening and a roar of thunder. The storm outside echoed the emotions that were swarming around the small room she now found herself in, saying good-bye to the person who meant the most to her.

“If you think it will help, then go. But running away won’t make the memories go away.” Harry said, continuing to stare out at the dark night, never once glancing her way.

“I have every reason to go. But I’m scared., England has always been my home and ya, I’m freaking out. But my parents think it’s a good idea. I think it might be a good idea. There’s so much pain here now. So many horrible memories that won’t go away. So I have every reason to go. Logically, I have every reason to go.” Hermione fought the tears that suddenly emerged from her eyes. They threatened to spill over and onto her cheek. Harry continued to stare out of the window, his emotions masked by the intense stare on his face.

“Logically, yes, you do. But like I said running away won’t make you forget. Faces don’t suddenly disappear from dreams, trust me.” Hermione exhaled heavily, as a single tear fell down her cheek. She made two steps towards Harry and stopped.

“Bloody hell, do I have to spell it out for you? Did you take too many hexes to the head? I’m asking you something here, Harry!” Hermione was out of breath and her composure was now weak. Harry finally turned to her and looked her dead in the eye.

“ What do you want from me, Hermione?”

“I want.... I want you to give me a reason to stay. A real reason, not a logical one. You know me better than anyone. I have every reason to go to France and start over, but no one will know me as well as you do. Harry, I am asking you for a reason to stay here, after everything that WE have been through. Give me a reason to stay here, and be the same Hermione you’ve always known, and fight through it all with you.” Several tears now spilled down her face, but she no longer cared. She only hoped Harry would give her the one thing she had come here tonight to get.

“Your parents know what’s best for you.”

“Harry give me a reason!” Hermione could barely speak as she fought the sobs that rose in her throat.

Harry looked up from the ground and looked sadly to Hermione. He walked to her, stopping only inches from her. For a second Hermione thought he would kiss her, as it almost mimicked that night. But alas he stopped and let out a short breath. He wiped a few of her tears away with his thumb, while he fought his own from spilling. He looked her deep in the eyes, and her expression softened.

“I think you should go to France. Stick with what’s logical.” Hermione can not hold in the sobs any longer, and as one finally escaped her throat she disappeared with a pop, leaving Harry alone. He stared at the spot where she stood for several seconds, his tears no longer held at bay. His own sob escaped his throat as he realized he just let the woman he loves walk away from his life, and it was his own fear that pushed her away.
