Prologue

-

Smoke and brimstone filled the air, hungry flames devouring everything in sight. Flashes of color, blues and whites and reds, filled the air, felling combatants one by one. Dark blood rained from the sky as winged beings clashed against each other in a battle unlike any seen before.

It was a conflict as old as time itself. Angels against Demons. Immortals against immortals. But this wasn’t a war about good versus evil. In fact, in this war there were no such distinctions.

Angels were not good, nor were they evil.

Demons were not evil, nor were they good.

This was a war based on love. And the right to love.

Ten thousand years before the existence of life, Angels and Demons were. They were natural enemies, two sides of a common balance. Light and dark, dark and light. Not all were content with this existence, and from this discontent rose another force in the Balance. The Shadow Beings.

The Shadow Beings were merely another type of Angels and Demons. They were called Anti-Angels, fallen Angels and risen Demons with a power that exceeded anything that either race had ever seen. Among their heightened senses, faster reflexes, and double power, they had the ability to grant wishes to those they gave the honor. The Angels despised them for their extraordinary powers, and Demons revered them because of it. The Anti-Angels held the power to rule their world as a center of the Balance.

But they did nothing. Ruling wasn’t what they wanted. And so they were left alone, for the most part, for several thousand years.

And then something changed.

Harisu, the most powerful Anti-Angel ever born, was considered the Hope of the Balance. He alone held enough power to complete the Balance and end the feud more than several thousand years old. He was their last chance at peace – their only chance. Appointed as the leader of the Shadow Beings, his work brought about the first ever Peace Treaty between the Angels and Demons. For three thousand years, no wars were fought, no blood shed in the name of the Balance.

And then, one day, he broke the most important, unspoken rule. He fell in love.

With a Demon.

Raevyn, Prince of the Demons, inherited his position in the way of Demons since the Beginning – by killing his predecessor. He was a powerful ruler, but not tyrannical like many of the last had been. He held his position much longer than any Demon had ever been able to, for no Demon had been able to best him in combat. So when he challenged Harisu, Lord of the Shadows, to a battle to prove his power he was completely astonished by his loss. He had never before lost in battle, and the ease and swiftness of Harisu’s ability to defeat him caused him no small amount of intrigue.

After several failed attempts, Raevyn finally managed to best him in a fight. Amused by the Demon Prince’s persistence, Harisu granted him a wish for his win.

Raevyn’s wish was for Harisu to stay with him forever.

A peculiar thing about Shadow Wishes was that they could be tweaked by the wish granter to be granted in the context it was seen in. Harisu saw it as Raevyn desiring him to stay with him in the Demon Kingdom, and so he was forced to live in the palace.

At first, Raevyn regretted his wish. Harisu’s fury at being tied to the Demon Prince resulted in several unhealthy pranks, a lot of damage, and a growing fear of the Lord of Shadows among the Demons. As Harisu got used to his new life, however, he began to feel less of a captive and realized Raevyn’s true intentions. Their budding courtship and eventual mating was as much of a surprise to them as it was to the denizens of the kingdom.

The kingdom was divided. Many saw this as a great opportunity to prove their worth in the Balance. Many more saw this as an abomination. When word was spread to the other two kingdoms, they too were divided.

And thus another war began.

The two lovers had no choice but to fight for their mating. As the only other option was to be torn apart, they fought harshly and without mercy. They and their allies began to slowly but steadily gain ground, however the tide was turned suddenly when during a battle, Harisu disappeared. For several months the war was oddly quiet until, six months after his capture, Harisu’s body was returned to the Demon Kingdom and his head mounted on the Angel’s Gate.

Enraged by the death of his mate, Raevyn obliterated the Angel Kingdom entirely, forcing the survivors to disappear into hiding. For the next several years, the Angel population dwindled until it was threatened into extinction and all Anti-Angels who sided against the lovers were executed.

By this time, the Wizarding World was beginning its advance into population as the newest power in the Balance, reincarnations of the powers destroyed during the Lover’s War. Wizards took the place of Angels and with a strong fear of Demons, began hunting them with fervor.

Despite the fact that wizards posed little threat to their existence, Prince Raevyn and the Demon Kingdom retreated into obscurity from the rest of the world. Before he disappeared, Raevyn vowed that when the soul of his beloved Harisu returned again to the world, so would he return to claim what was his.

The last Demon sighting was in 113 A.D., during the height of the First Goblin War, in which….

Harry closed his History of Magic book and settled down to write his essay. Explain the reasons for the longest Demon-Angel war in history and its effects on Wizard Society.
