A-N - I'm going to try something different, so i took out the song lyrics to see how the story flows. Let me know what you think.

Prologue

It was the lack of life that was in her eyes that scared him the most.

He had noticed that she didn’t try to answer everything in Potions any more. She would just write down the notes, or perform the daily task, never uttering a word. Even when she was called upon, she would give short, simple answers and then go back to her silence. It scared him, more then he wanted to admit.

The red-headed prat practically drooled over her whenever he was sitting next to her; and he was always sitting next to her in class, in the Hall for meals, in the library pretending to study. But she never seemed to notice. She never smiled anymore…and it pained him to see that.

Things shouldn’t be so hard for so young a soul, but darkness lurks all around. He knew darkness; he had embraced it so long ago. Yet she was mostly light, and he craved it. He craved her, like how a moth craved a flame. He wanted to comfort her, to protect her from the hell he knew was only just starting.

He tried speaking to her one day after class, but she just looked straight ahead, not seeming to even hear him as he quietly questioned if she needed to talk to anyone. She simply shook her head no and left quickly. He was really starting to get worried, and vowed then and there to speak to Dumbledore about it.

Yes, he knew his share of pain as he had suffered for years with it. Yet nothing pained him more then seeing the emptiness in her eyes.

Just one little spark of life in her eyes would have made him feel so much better.
He should have known…. He should have known that it would only get worse. It all started a day in Potions. She seemed so clumsy, not like herself at all, and ended up melting her cauldron. Not even a stern lecture on how she should be more careful could have prepared him for what was to come.

He tried to speak to her again after class, but she seemed a million miles away. When he grasped her upper arm, gently, to try and bring her back to reality, he noticed the stickiness of the fabric of her dark sweater. He pulled up the sleeve and saw the cuts; deep, long cuts that decorated her arms…there was hardly an inch of uncut skin that he could find. And it broke his heart. He hugged her for the first time after he discovered her self mutilation. Tears flowed from his eyes and he finally told her of how he was worried for her; how she deserved so much better then the struggles she was going through. How he had tried to warn the Order that her parents were being targeted…but it was too late.

She looked up at him, the daze seeming to clear from her eyes as she spoke to him for the first time in almost a week. “Why do you even care?” her voice was hollow and full of pain.

He answered back hesitantly, “Because…I care for you.”

Tears began to stream from her beautiful cinnamon eyes. “Can you make the pain go away?” Her plea was simple and heart wrenching.

“I will do everything within my power to make it better...Ms. Gra….Hermione” he stuttered. She looked at him…then slowly wrapped her arms around him.

“Thank you…..Severus” she whispered, hugging him tightly.
