The New Arrival
Hunter Catiar was your typical American kid growing up in a nice suburban neighborhood on the outskirts of Houston, TX. Then on his 11th birthday his whole world changed forever. Hunter had never known his father, having been raised by his mother and grandparents since his parent's divorce when he was still a baby. Hunter never knew that his father was a wizard, and now so was he. Hunter soon grew to resent the way his life had turned out while attending a Wizarding school in the swamps of Louisiana.
As his 5th year approached his mother informed him that she and her boyfriend of two years were getting married as soon as he got out of school for the summer. Hunter had never liked his mother's boyfriend and now she was going to marry him. To make matters worst it turns out that his future step-father is also a wizard and had accepted a position with the Ministry of Magic back in his home country, ENGLAND.
That was three weeks ago and now Hunter was sitting on a train bound for yet another school he never wanted to attend, in a country he never wanted to move to, listening to a group of idiots he never wanted to meet, talking about classes he never wanted to take.
Starring out the window at the landscape passing him by, Hunter wonders for the tenth time in as many minutes when it was that his life had stopped being about what he wanted and started being about he had to do. What some stupid Ministry said he had to do.
Hunter hated his life now and longed for the days when he and his mother had been closer but that all that had changed when he received his letter to his last school. It was like an invisible barrier had gone up between them and the bond they once shared was gone forever. Then Thomas entered the picture and he had lost her altogether.
As the train came to a stop everyone began making there way outside dressed in their school robes. Hunter left his in his trunk and waited for the others to leave the train before finally getting up to join them.
Naturally as the last one off the train he attracted the most attention from the others. They all gawked at him as he made his way over towards Hagrid and the first years boarding the boats that would take them to Hogwarts. Hunter was of course still dressed in his street close which consisted of a black T-shirt, black jeans, black work boots and a biker jacket that once belonged to his late Uncle Jim.
For most of his life, Uncle Jim was the only father figure Hunter ever knew. He had passed away when Hunter was ten and Hunter often wondered what his Uncle would say if he could see how his life was turning out. Hunter knew he was wasting his time with these kind of thoughts.
He climbed into a boat with three small and terrified first year girls. They all stared at him as he looked over there heads in the direction the boat was going. They traveled in silence until Hogwarts came into view. The girls then began chatting excitedly as he ignored them.
A few minutes later he found himself in the entrance hall with the others as they waited to be sorted into their houses. He knew the routine having gone through this once before at his old school. As Professor McGonagall began her annual speech her words became caught in her throat as her eyes fell on Hunter.
"Young man there is a dress code at Hogwarts that all students are excepted to abide by." She told him in her famously stern tone. "Where are your school robes?"
Hunter shrugs unfazed by the Head of House's little demonstration. "They're in my trunk." He answers.
His face showed his lack of remorse and concern for the violation. This only served to upset McGonagall even further. "Young man you will meet me after the feast to discuss your punishment."
Hunter just shrugs his shoulders in response. He's was so used to being in trouble that he no longer cares what his teachers did to him anymore. In fact his normal response of 'When and Who' when informed of a detention at his last school had become the stuff of legend among both the student body and the faculty.
McGonagall delivers her usual speech before leading them into the great hall. The first years are impressed by the enchanted ceiling but Hunter pays it no mind. As they make their way between the tables Hunter notices the stares and whispers. They were similar to those in his last school except for the fact that had yet to earn the same reputation.
In his last school Hunter had earned a reputation as a trouble maker and loner. While only a few students and a couple teachers actually hated him, the rest simply gave up on trying to get through to him. "He's not a bad guy," they would say. He just doesn't care about anyone or anything.
The truth of the matter wasn't that he didn't care, it was that every time he did he ended up hurt. He had cared about his mother and ended up hurt when he lost her because he was a wizard. The same went for his grandparents, who had kicked them out while he was away during his first year. He had cared about his Uncle Jim who died in a car accident. He even cared about a girl at his last school, who had been his only friend. He lost her too when she was murdered two weeks before the start of his 4th year.
His trip down memory lane was interrupted when his name was called. He walked up the aisle and taking the sorting hat from Professor McGonagall places it on his head and waits to be sorted.
"Very interesting this mind you have." The magical hat says in his head. "Much courage and a keen intellect. No fear of hard work but a lack of ambition. Where to place you?"
"Shut up and get it over with so I can sit down." Hunter growled loud enough for the entire hall to hear him.
"Well in that case it has to be... GRYFFINDOR." The sorting hat finally announced.
As Hunter took the hat off, he could clearly see McGonagall was none too pleased with the selection. He knew then she was his Head of House. "Now you'll know where to find me," he says handing the hat back to her. Without another word he takes a seat at the far end of the table as far from the others as he could.
Author's Note: Hunter's last name is pronounced Cat-E-ar. Things are just getting started and don't worry this wouldn't be a Harry Potter fic without our favorite young wizard making regular cameo appearances. Stay tuned for the next chapter as our favorite red headed side kick make his dislike of his newest room mate known.
