Birds of the Same Feather Flock Together
Her little fascination. At corners she would hide just to get a glimpse of her creature. That mysterious thing, seemingly always in the shadows.
Luna watched, she was good at it. They all thought she was out of her mind. Lost in a dream. But she saw… She saw the lies, the little make-believe plays people put on. But her creature, with the wild curls of mud brown, old eyes and lips that were always dry, it never put on a play… her creature was detached from the world.
There it was again, darting out of the library. A book under one arm, head lowered. Some might mistake the posture for shame, perhaps shyness, but her creature made it seem as if it did not need to look upon others, it made it look regal.
Quickly Luna followed, not wanting to lose sight of it. She watched it go down corridors. It knew where it needed to be…where it belonged.
It paused and so did Luna. It craned its neck up, took a breath and continued. The parting of those cracked lips froze Luna.
In just a second, it was out of sight. Luna hurried, she didn’t have to, she already knew where it was going.
Luna stopped just before entering the small courtyard that Hogwarts hid in the deepest parts of the dungeons. No one else knew of this little haven. The plants needed no light. The fountain in the corner had the bluest hue to it, but there was no water.
A hand on her shoulder. Luna did not gasp, perhaps a ‘sane’ person would have, but she was never thought of as sane. She already knew who it was, but she turned anyways. It would not be polite to ignore her creature.
Turning she smiled, “Hello.” Simple.
No reply.
“Would you like to dance?” It did not look surprised, it merely shook its head. Feeling a bit uncertain for the first time, Luna scratched her arm. She did not look into its eyes.
The lips would brake the moment the mouth stretched, Luna was sure. What a hideous mouth it had. So full, almost sensual, but the scars made it grotesque.
It smiled and Luna was right. The lips split, blood poured out of the opened wounds. It licked every drop.
“Why…why do you follow me?” The voice was husky. Like it was forever sick, or rarely used.
Why? Well, Luna really couldn’t answer. Maybe it was because it was like her. Lost in its own world. But its eyes, they were nothing like Luna’s. Its mouth…it was nothing like Luna’s. Both spoke of knowledge and secrets, while Luna’s of innocents.
“Would you like to dance?” Luna asked once more. This time afraid. Afraid of what? She didn’t know.
“I don’t dance.” It was not cruel, rather direct… merciless.
This time she did look into the eyes. She was amazed to see that they weren’t brown, no…they were a deep green. The dark forest.
“Lovegood.” Luna looked at her creature. “May I help you?” It asked.
“What are you?”
Now it looked puzzled, and a bit amused. “What am I?” Raising an eyebrow and smirking it answered, “I’m Jim Byrd.”
“Huh.” Now really. It made no sense. Luna thought hard, but no answers came to mind.
“I have to leave.” It said, turning to leave.
“My name is Luna.” She said quickly. Not wanting it to disappear without knowing her name.
It turned back, “ Umm…My name is Millie.” Thinking for a moment. “It was a pleasure.” And with those last words Millie left.
“Okay.” Luna said in a daze.
Luna just knew that they would become good friends.

If you’re not familiar with Jim Byrd, well he was a secret agent who delivered mission to Chuck Barris, who was an assassin and out of his mind, I always thought. It’s a movie called “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind”, and I know that Millie shouldn’t be knowing muggle pop culture, but it seemed appropriate in this instance. It’s a one shot, I might expend it, but knowing me, I probably won’t.
