Snake Tales
Albus Dumbledore stood as his guests appeared at his office door. “Please, come in.” He said and his two most trusted Professors, Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape, took a seat in front of his desk.
“I’m sure you’re curious as to why I’ve asked you here.” The Headmaster began. “I have received some most disturbing information. It seems that there is a group of Death Eaters attempting to restore their master to his former glory.”
“The rumors I reported to you...” Severus murmured.
“Yes, Severus. They believe they’ve found a way.” Albus said.
“I assume you have some sort of plan?” Minerva asked.
“Yes, my dear. The spell the Death Eaters are planning on using has a counter-spell that will render it useless, but like all things in life the counter spell is going to be quite difficult to retrieve.”
“Meaning?” Severus asked.
“It is contained in a book that was destroyed over thirty years ago.” Albus told them.
“And I would also assume that if this was as simple as procuring a time turner and retrieving the book we would not be here.” Minerva said.
“Correct again.” The Headmaster smiled. “The book had a spell placed upon it by a certain rambunctious youth that allow it only to be handled and read by a child.”
“Per aumentare Ancora.” Severus muttered.
“To rise again?” Minerva questioned.
“Good to see you’ve been keeping up on your Italian.” Albus said merrily. “Yes. The Book, To Rise again was written by a very old friend of mine and contained different spells for attaining immortality. And our dear Severus took it upon himself as a teenager to make the book impossible for anyone over the age of seventeen to read.”
“Your shining sense of humor and irony I see.” Minerva said with a glare.
Severus merely lifted a brow.
“I destroyed the book, with Severus’ help, so that it could never be used, or make a child be used, by those who would want it for darker purposes. As far as I’m aware it is the only text containing the counter curse to the one the Death Eaters plan to use.”
“And your plan?” Severus asked.
“Simple. We send a student back to get the book for us.”
“Oh yes, dreadfully simple. Why didn’t I see it?” Severus said dryly.
“If the student is chosen carefully I see no reason for it not to be simple. And that is why you are here.” Albus told them.
“You want us to help you chose someone for this fools errand?” Snape asked.
The Headmaster inclined his head.
The Potion’s Master crossed his arms over his chest. “I suppose the two of you will have a Gryffindor in mind.”
“Actually, I believe I may know the perfect student.” Minerva murmured. “And she happens to reside in Slytherin.”
“Really?” Severus drawled.
“Sera Shaw.” Minerva stated.
“The Queen of the Silver and Green, so the students call her.” Severus murmured. “Quite brilliant, by all accounts. Quiet very….self-contained.”
“Rules your house with quite an iron-fist, so I’m told. She puts up with no house rivalry or bullying, correct?” Albus asked.
Severus nodded. “She’s put an end to many a squabble between dueling houses.”
“What of her family? I don’t believe I’m familiar with any Shaws.” Minerva asked.
“An adopted name.” Albus answered. “She a pure blood by birth but her parents were killed in an accident when she was young. She was raised by muggles.”
“A pure blood raised by muggles. Now that is a pretty piece of irony in the house of Salazar Slytherin.” Minerva said with a smirk.
“Indeed.” Albus agreed. “You believe we could trust her with this?”
“I do.” Minerva said. She’d taken a liking to the girl the first time she set eyes on her. Her keen aptitude at Transfiguration only increased the fondness.
“Severus?” Albus asked.
“Truthfully I know very little of the girl bedsides her penchant for keeping her house in line and her extraordinary grades. She never causes trouble or needs assistance therefore I’ve had little contact with her in the six years she’s been in my House. But I suppose if I had to choose someone for this task, it would be her.” Snape said.
“Well then, I’ll send a summons for Miss Shaw and we’ll see what she thinks of the idea.”
