Betas: The Goblet and Tall oaks.
Part 1
The final battle had been won.
Lord Voldemort AKA Tom Riddle had been left as nothing more than a small pile of fine gray grit that was dumped unceremoniously into a shoebox and left somewhere in one of Professor Dumbledore\'s many cluttered storerooms.
These storerooms were very unusual places that appeared and disappeared at will and bore a marked resemblance to the warehouse shown at the end of the muggle movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. It was pretty much assumed by all that this time Voldemort was dead and would stay that way.
That was the good news. The better news was that Voldemort had been the only fatality on either side.
A powerful magical energy feedback wave had been created by Severus Snape and sent through the Dark Mark that disabled the Death Eaters, and consequently weakening Voldemort.
This had left Voldemort alone and somewhat disoriented when he faced Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore and Remus Lupin. Their combined power put the Dark Lord in his present molecularly challenged state. Then the Headmaster had conjured a small cordless vacuum to remove his remains.
In the aftermath of the Dark Lord\'s fall, most of the Death Eaters had been easily rounded up and put back into the newly reopened Azkaban, complete with very hungry Dementors. Somehow, Albus Dumbledore had managed to convince the ghastly creatures that Voldemort\'s was the losing side. Though no one knew exactly how he had persuaded the Dementors to return to Azkaban.
When asked how he had managed that particular miracle, the Headmaster simply smiled.
At this point, it would seem that the story would be over. After all, Voldemort was dead, most of his followers captured. Good had triumphed over evil and it was not even the Christmas Holidays. The students of Hogwarts were not sure what to do with them selves.
While it is true that a handful of Voldemort\'s minions remained at large, the few Death Eaters that were not deceased or incarcerated were a small poorly organized group of less then twenty wizards under the command of Walden McNair. The man was a vicious brute, but he was not a charismatic leader. Even though they had not been completely neutralized they were considered only a minor threat to the inhabitants of Hogwarts and everyone expected them to be apprehended soon.
It looked as if Harry Potter and his friends could finish their last year at Hogwarts in peace and everyone would live happily ever after.
But they were about to find out that they were wrong. The story is not over, because someone at Hogwarts decided that it was open season on Severus Snape.
____
Unaware of the cruel twists that the fates had in store for him Severus Snape strode into his classroom ready for the day. He was rested, relaxed and feeling very good about life in general.
The Potions Master hoped that after having the weekend to finish enjoying their victory, the students would finally be ready to get back to some semblance of normalcy. He could not believe that Dumbledore or the Board of Governors had actually attempted to make them resume classes last week! The students and everyone else had still been celebrating Voldemort\'s defeat. How could anyone have seriously expected any of them, including the staff to concentrate on schoolwork?
There had been a time when the enthusiasm of his young charges would have set off his temper. Instead at times last week he had found himself hard pressed not to laugh or even sing, because for the first time in his adult life he was truly free and no minor disruption even the occasional melted cauldron was enough to dampen his spirits.
As he wrote the potion making instructions on the chalkboard at the front of the classroom, Severus started out with a slight smile on his face. But as he wrote the complex instructions for the seventh year class, his smile began to fade. Suddenly, an unexplainable feeling of dread settled over him, like the heavy oppressive feel of the calm before a storm.
He jumped as he felt the sharp crackle of power play over his skin. A loud \'popping\' noise erupted from the air and seemingly out of nowhere a large bucket appeared above his head. Before he could do more then gasp, the bucket upended and dumped its contents, a horrible smelling thick bright blue goo on his head.
After a movement of shock, he rushed into his office. Severus pulled the chain on the safety shower and quickly rinsed the rather nasty smelling stuff off. He was only slightly surprised to realize that the slime had turned his normally jet-black hair bright neon blue. He did blanche as he saw that one of his eyebrows had also been turned vivid blue. The disgusting slime had also completely ruined a brand new set of teaching robes.
Fortunately, Severus was prepared for such an emergency. He always had a bottle of black hair dye handy. Years of dealing with incompetent students, and very competent practical jokers had taught him to keep a supply of anti-nausea potion, fresh clothes, burn salve and yes, hair dye in the closet beside the shower.
His hair had been turned platinum blonde at least once a year since he started teaching.
With a wave of his wand he used a spell to clean the mess, freshen the air, and make sure that no evidence of the prank would be visible when the students arrived. He would watch for guilty or anxious faces, but to be honest at this point what he really hoped was that the prankster(s?) would assume that the attempt was unsuccessful and give up.
Later that day in Potions class Harry Potter tried not to allow his disappointment to show when he saw that the prank his friend had told him about seemed to have failed. It would have been fun to see Snape with blue hair.
Maybe it would have helped with the grease?
Even if Harry had been more than a little uneasy about the whole thing, Snape was still a bit of a prick at times. Though with Voldemort gone he had actually calmed down. His classes were not the nerve racking, torture sessions that they had once been for anyone not of the Slytherin persuasion.
Harry had tried to talk him out of it, but his friend insisted, and Harry could not really blame him. He had been through so much during and after the war. He deserved some enjoyment.
Harry just hoped the other pranks his friend had planned would not make Snape revert. He was actually a decent teacher now that he was not being a complete bastard.
