Disclaimer: Have transfigured J K Rowlings characters for the duration. Don’t own anything here but the plot…and I’m not even sure I own the plot.
This story is Pre-HBP. Sorry but I cannot live in a world without Dumbledore, so that makes this AU. Technically all fanfic is AU though (IMO) so there you have it.
Prologue
“Father, are you sure?” Draco halted on the steps outside Malfoy Manor.
“Of course I am, Draco. Severus Snape has been walking a fine line for far too long. Once, I called him ‘friend’. I even named him your Godfather,” Lucius Malfoy wrinkled his elegant nose at the thought. “Now that he is to be proven the enemy of my Master, I must call him ‘enemy’ also.”
“And what if Uncle…what if Snape is innocent? What if the old hag was having you on?”
“It doesn’t really matter either way, my son. Severus has held a position of favour that belongs to me. Now he will be out of the way, I will stand at my Master’s right hand with you at my side, and the purity of wizard blood shall take its rightful place. After all, he is only a half-blood no matter how useful he has been. Indeed, there may be profit to be gained in this after all when my Master rewards me for my loyalty.”
Lucius Malfoy grinned malevolently at his teenage son and stalked off into Malfoy Manor.
Draco chewed on the soft inner tissue of his cheek as he followed his father inside. The old Seeress in Knockturn Alley had spoken some sort of prophesy, and now Lucius would see Snape handed over to the Dark Lord as a traitor.
Had it been anyone else, Draco would not have cared less, but Snape was his mentor and Godfather. Blast it! Uncle Severus is more of a father to me than my own, he thought irritably.
There is bound to be some mistake, he thought, some part of the prophecy that doesn’t fit. Father didn’t give me anything more than the wording. Perhaps if Uncle Severus hears it, he will have an explanation out of it. If he is a traitor then hearing the words won’t help him, it will only make him run and they’ll hunt him down anyway - so there will be no harm in my telling him. And if he is innocent, Draco rolled his eyes at the irony of an innocent Death Eater, if he is innocent then he will owe me a great debt!
Smiling over that prospect, Draco determined to speak to Snape at the first opportunity. Holidays were over and his return to Hogwarts was just a day away. Just one term left and then he would be graduating…and joining the ranks of the Death Eaters. Father doesn’t need to know everything I do. Wouldn’t be very Slytherin to play my hand too openly. He grinned again and made his way inside. Indeed, Father, there may be profit in this yet…for me!
