Chapter One - “How Long has it Been?”
I own nothing. JKR owns it all, I just play in her world.
Chapter One – The Message
Hermione sat alone looking out her flat’s one window with a view. She was draped over her threadbare couch, looking out the little window into muggle London. Many witches and wizards did not want an apartment so close to muggles so she was able to afford a bit bigger place, and she loved being on the cusp of both the muggle and wizard worlds.
She was reflecting on her life up to this point, it had been ten years since she was at Hogwarts, and ten years since she had been part of the “trio”. Her, Ron, and Harry were still friends, but now they had their own lives, loves, and work. They did not understand her drive to learn even as children, and were baffled when she had wanted to endure more schooling so she could not just work for the ministry but teach if she wanted. She found ministry work to have a glass ceiling for “mudbloods” though no one ever said anything harsh. She was just given the lowest most insignificant tasks.
“Mione maybe they just want ya to take it easy. Everyone knows what help you were to me in the final battle” said the Harry voice ringing in her ears.
“But Harry I want to be stimulated and work hard, and all I did was what I always did, pour over the library for any spells” her memory countered. “I want to be appreciated in my own right too, not just as friend to the boy who lived.” He hated that name, so of course it had followed him into adulthood, even through the war, and auror training.
A loud tap interrupted her thoughts. Tap! Tap! The tapping was from a rather ugly bird on the other side of the window, she noticed as her eyes came back into focus. She reached up and opened the window. The bird ran in as soon as it could squeeze into the opening and started pecking her hand. She swatted at it and she noticed she was bleeding.
“Damn ugly bird what do you want?” she asked the creature. She swore again as the bird tried to peck her again. She realized it had a message on its leg but she could not avoid the beak to get at it. “Petrificus Totalus” she screamed and the angry bird fell over limp. The eyes still followed her and she knew the seething hatred of the black eyes meant it would hurt her as soon as it was released. She removed the message from the bird’s leg. It read: from Severus Snape, to miss Hermione Granger.
