How It Should Be

Draco had just gotten off work as an auror and came home to his empty house. How he dreaded that, this house used to be so full of love and laughter, but now it was just quiet. It had been this way since his lover, his husband, had been killed two years ago.

He remembered when they had gotten married. The two had been secretly seeing each other since fifth year and married right before seventh. His love had helped him convince his father to spy for Dumbledore, which kept him out of Azkaban after the war ended. In return he and his father had helped clear the name of his love’s godfather. That’s right, he had married none other than Harry Potter.

He remembered the night he proposed to Harry. The small Gryffindor had just gotten permission for the summer before seventh year to say at Malfoy Manor after Draco had convinced him to tell Dumbledore about the abuse he suffered at the hand of his family. Upon finding out about the abuse Dumbledore had readily agreed to allow Harry to stay there as it had more wards and would be able to protect him from Voldemort.

There had been many great and embarrassing times at the manor that year. Sirius had been invited to stay by Lucius after Draco’s mother had been kicked out for cheating on her husband. Draco still laughed at the memory of how he and Harry had walked in on his father and Sirius making out in his fathers study when they had gone to find them to tell them they were getting married. He remembered how red Harry blushed at the sight. It made him want to cry that his husband was no longer with him. His father and Sirius were now married, and always seemed to be dropping by to make sure he was doing ok. He always put up a mask to make it look like he was fine, but deep down he just wanted to curl up into himself and wait until it was his time to join he beloved Harry.

He walked over to the mantle and looked at the picture in the center of it, it was Harry’s favorite. It was taken just before the final battle. They had just graduated a couple of days before and were at their new home, this home, relaxing by the fire. He was reclining against the arm of the couch with his feet stretched out if front of him. Harry was resting between his legs with his back to his chest and Draco’s arms were wrapped around Harry’s waist. They had been so happy at the time.

That all changed the day of Harry’s 18th birthday. They had been called back to Hogwarts as Voldemort was attacking. They found Voldemort at the center of a group of death eaters. The two battled him together and eventually defeated him, but neither saw or heard the curse Bellatrix threw at Draco, until right before it was going to hit him. Then he saw Harry jump in front of him and disappear. He threw a killing curse at his aunt, and began to search for Harry. The search continued until eventually the only ones searching for him, his father and Sirius, Ron and Hermione, and Albus. Hermione had been upset as she couldn’t fight in the battle, as she was four months pregnant with Ron’s son.

The two had married after the search ended and Harry had been declared dead. Their son was now a year and a half old and Draco had been made godfather. There was only one godparent as they wanted Harry to be the other. Ron and Hermione had been married a year and were still always inviting him over for dinner and to make sure he didn’t get too depressed.

The other main development was that his godfather Severus Snape had married Remus Lupin right after his father had married Sirius. He thought it was funny the calming affect the Gryffindors had on their Slytherin mates. He knew he and Harry had been the same. All that needed to happen to calm him at his worst was for Harry to walk into the room and instantly he was calm, unless someone tried to hurt his smaller lover, then he was vicious.

He then thought back to the day they all realized Harry must have died. They all knew he would have been found or come back to him if he had survived, but after a year they had to admit the chance were nonexistent that he was still alive. Draco died that day, without his love he had nothing to live for and was now just going through the motions of everyday life until he could join Harry.

Looking up when he heard someone call his name he gave his father a small smile.

“Draco, we are having your American cousin over for dinner tonight and would like for you to join us.”

“Sure father what time?”

“He is coming around seven. It is your cousin Arian and he is bringing his lover and his lover’s one-year-old daughter. How he ever gets these people to stay with him I will never know.” His father said as he ended the call. Draco’s cousin was known to be abusive to his partners and felt it was his right for taking care of them to hit them if they did not do as he said.

You would never know the man was a Malfoy. He had brown hair and eyes, and was stuck up and cold at all times. The rest of the family was at least warm when they were just around family. His cousin had told him a little about the man he had been dating for the last two years, but never introduced him to the family. He had told him that when they found the poor guy he had no memory of who he was and was a month pregnant. Arian told Draco that he had taken off the man’s wedding ring and the poor guy didn’t even know he was married to someone. Maybe he would get the guy alone tonight and tell him, just to piss his cousin off. Draco had never liked Arian anyways.

James Evans was getting his one-year-old daughter ready to go meet his lover’s uncles tonight. Kaylie Evans was James’s daughter from another life he didn’t even remember. All he knew was Arian found him outside a New York wizarding hospital and had started dating him. At first things were great between the two of them, Arian was so sweet. Then after his daughter was born things changed. He was no longer allowed out of the house without his lover. If the house wasn’t clean and dinner wasn’t on the table when Arian got home he would get smacked around. He was grateful that Kaylie had never been hit.

His daughter was the only reason he stayed. He had no money as he was not allowed to work and no way to support them. He still to this day had no idea why he was before, but had flashes of a man with blond hair, the same color as his daughters, and thought that might be her father. She had his tanned skin tone and green eyes, but that was about it. He had long black hair that went just passed his shoulders and bright green eyes unhindered by glasses as Arian said he would never date someone with glasses and had taken him to get his eyes fixed. He knew he was British because of his accent, and knew there had been a war over there that had recently ended, but Arian had kept him from contacting any one.

He looked up as he heard Kaylie’s door open and saw Arian standing in the door way.

“You are to stay away from my cousin tonight or so help me…” Arian didn’t have to finish that threat James knew what that meant. He still had the bruises from yesterday.

Arian then grabbed him by the arm as he picked up his daughter and apperated all the of them out infront of a grand manor.

When the house elf opened the door James watched as it’s eyes grew too large for its head and it started jumping up and down, “Master Harry has returned. Masters Draco, Lucius, and Sirius will be so happy.”

This elf knew him and he knew Arian must have realized that as his grip on James tightened to the point he winced. It was at that time the noise the elf was making drew the attention of the house’s occupants.

Draco, Lucius, and Sirius heard one of the house elfs making an obscene amount of noise and went to go check it out. When they saw who was at the door with Arian they all froze. It was then they noticed the little girl in the smaller mans arm, and the look of pain on the man’s face. The little girl was crying, scared by the noise and Draco saw how much she looked like him. It was then he realized that he was the husband of Arian’s lover and his beloved didn’t remember him. Then he saw the pained look in the face of the one he loved.

Draco reached out and tore Arians fingers off James. Seeing the look of relief as the man clutched his daughter closer to him while whispering comforting words to her. Draco wanted to reach out and pull Harry into his arms, but knew that would scare and confuse the poor man. He just prayed this was real.

“Arian, why don’t you all come in?” said Lucius.

“Hello uncles, cousin, this is James and his daughter Kaylie. I’m sorry it has been so long, but you know how it is.” Arian said as he wrapped an arm around James and ignored the flinch from the man next to him when he did.

Draco wanted to rip his arm off, how dare he touch what was his. He wanted to do nothing more than take his husband and lock him away from the rest of the world. It was then he remembered something.

“So do you still have it?”

“Have what?” his cousin asked faking innocence.

“His wedding ring, the one you told me you took from him when he first came to the hospital unconscious. The one hanging around your neck.” Draco said as he pulled the chain into view. Sure enough there was a ring hanging from it.

Draco gave a quick tug and the chain broke. He handed the ring and his own wedding band to James and watched as the man studied the two of them.

The moment James read the inscription his memories started coming back to him. He remembered the first time Draco kissed him, the first time they slept together, the time Draco found out about the Dursleys, everything. He knew he had to play as he hadn’t though so as not to get his daughter hurt, but would inform someone by the end of the evening. He knew where he belonged and would not go back to the hell he had lived for the past two years.

He made sure his face was blank of any signs of recognition when he looked at the other occupants and almost felt his resolve crumble when he saw they were all devastated by the fact that they might be wrong. Thinking of a fast plan to get away from Arian and informing someone he said, “The baby needs to be changed, is there a bathroom around here somewhere.” Seeing Arian pleased that he didn’t seem to recognize these people he knew he made the right decision.

His heart fell however when he heard Lucius reply, “I will call a house elf for you.”

“Actually, I will show him to the closest one.” Came Sirius’s voice.

With that the two got up and left the room. When they were a good distance from the door Harry grabbed Sirius by the arm and spun him around. “Sirius”

He saw the man’s eyes well with tears knowing he had recognized him, “Harry” he nodded and was pulled into the strong arms of his godfather.

“You got to help me Siri,” he cried as his godfather held him. “He hits me. Hasn’t touched Kaylie, but has hit me many times. I didn’t know where to go, didn’t know who I was and couldn’t support her.” He couldn’t go on as he was crying too hard.

“Shhh, we won’t let him touch you ever again. Do you remember the house you and Draco bought?” When Harry nodded he continued, “Good I want you to floo there and stay there.” With that he walked Harry over to a fireplace and handed him some floo powder. When Harry was safely gone he went back to the sitting room.

When he arrived the first thing said was, “Where’s James?”

“Somewhere safe from you. He told me what you do to him and if you think I would let him go back to you your crazy.” Sirius spat at him. “Now you will kindly leave my house.”

Arian made to protest, but was stopped by Draco who grabbed him by the arm and hauled him out of the room. When Draco returned he looked at Sirius with a raised eyebrow. All that happened was he was handed back the rings, which Harry had given back to Sirius.

“Sorry Draco, but I think you should go home.” Draco nodded sadly, not looking forward to going home to an empty house. He felt like Harry died again that day and this time took with him a child they had never had.

When he was gone Sirius looked at Lucius and said, “We won’t have to worry about him being alone anymore. Not with a husband and daughter there.”

It took a second, but Lucius figured it out and kissed Sirius for all he was worth.

Draco stepped out of the fireplace into his sitting room fighting back tears. He put his wedding band back on and put Harry’s in his pocket.

“Draco?” came a quiet voice on the sofa. Looking up he saw James and his daughter on his couch. “I remember. I remember everything.”

Draco couldn’t hold back the tears anymore as he saw tears running down Harry’s face. He walked slowly toward the couch afraid that when he touched Harry he would disappear. He knelt in front of his love between Harry’s legs and cupped Harry’s cheek feeling the soft skin under his hand. Then he looked at the little girl in Harry’s lap, his daughter, and placed a hand on the side of her head as if to see if she was real too. He looked back into the green eyes he had longed for. He slowly leaned forward and gently pressed his lips to Harry’s careful not to crush the little girl between them. After an all too short chaste kiss he leaned back and looked into Harry’s face and smiled.

“Your really here.”

“Yes love, both of us are.”

Later that night after they had put Kaylie to bed, they sat in peace and quiet on the sofa. Draco had an arm draped over the back of the sofa and Harry was nestled into his side. Draco reached into his pocket and pulled out Harry’s wedding band.

“Time to put his back where it belongs.” He said as he slid the ring onto the left ring finger. After the ring was in place he kissed the hand and pulled Harry in for another kiss. It started out chaste, but soon got more heated as he nibbled on Harry’s lower lip. When the mouth opened his tongue entered. Things were finally as they were supposed to be, but for how long.
