CHAPTER ONE

Hermione lay at the edge of the dock with her fingers dangling in the water. The water felt cool and smooth to the touch, as she let her mind wander. In two more days she would no longer be a student at Hogwart’s, and she was hiding down at the lake because she just wasn’t up to being in the castle, where everyone was participating in the end of the year party.

Voldemort had been defeated a few weeks before the end of the school year, and life looked reasonably villain-free for a while. During the war, Hermione’s parents had been relocated to America due to the Death Eaters who were trying to hunt them down. She had received a letter from her parents just yesterday, and it seemed they were very happy in their new home and at this time had no plans to move back to England. While very happy for them, it just made her feel so blue.

It seemed like everyone had someplace that they were going or someone special to be with except her. Ron and Luna were an item; they had been dating ever since the incident at the Ministry.

Harry and Ginny had finally gotten together, during the last few weeks. They both had many things in common, and wanted a large family after Ginny finished wizarding college or whatever apprenticeship she decided upon.

Harry and Ron would be leaving soon to try out for Quidditch with Ron’s favorite team, the Chudley Cannons. Hermione had no doubt in her mind that they would both make the team. Her other fellow classmates would be leaving too for college, or jobs that their families had set up within the wizarding world.

As Hermione’s mind continued to drift, she didn’t even realize that she had started to weep and that her teardrops were falling into the water. Through all her years at Hogwarts there had been only a handful of times that people saw beyond her brains to the lovely young woman she had become. Hermione had chosen to become an apprentice to Madam Pomfrey. She wondered if she was destined to live a solitary life, like most of the professors at the school – no spouse, no children, no boyfriend to call her own - and having most of her friends far removed from her.

With this last though Hermione drifted off to sleep, never noticing the Queen Mermaid who had been silently floating nearby.

*********

There are many Mervillages all over the world, including the lake near Hogwarts. Queen Andrea, visited the many villages all over the world. She had a special interest in the village led by the Merchieftainess Murcus, who was friends with Albus Dumbledore.

Queen Andrea had watched and heard of the bright young girl for seven years, since her first crossing of the lake. During that time Andrea had witnessed the pain of Hermione’s first year, when she didn’t have any friends at first. They had even waved to each other several times, until the two young men she currently hung around with had befriended her.

During Hermione’s second year, Andrea saw less of the girl due to her being petrified and turning into a cat, but she observed that the girl did not seem to be traumatized by those events. Her third year had been even worse: because of the Time Turner Hermione had used, Andrea only saw Hermione when she first arrived at school in September, and a few days before the end of that school year. Still, she heard of the girl’s bravery in facing a werewolf, and in defending a magical creature from execution.

It was during the second task of the Triwizard Tournament, in Hermione’s fourth year, that Andrea came up with the idea to try and convince Hermione to become a Mermaid. At that time Andrea didn’t know how it would come about, but it was time for her to make some serious plans.

After that year, Andrea made sure to try to be around whenever Hermione wandered down to the lake. It was imperative that Hermione not be afraid of her or the water, or else her plans would not work.

While most Merpeople only have the power to bewitch travelers, Queen Andrea had magical talents that went beyond that. Her blood line could be traced back, as far as, Ran & Aegir. It was said that her grandfather had successfully wooed a witch. Andrea’s mother was born of that union; she was the first of her clan to have magical abilities. Those abilities had been passed down to Andrea, and had benefited all Merpoeple.

It was now time for Queen Andrea to put her plans into motion. She knew without a doubt that Hermione could become one of the most powerful sirens of all time, if she would only accept the gift that Andrea was giving her.
