Severus Snape paced restlessly before the blazing fireplace of his remote dungeon quarters. It was -at last- the winter holiday at Hogwarts and Severus couldn’t have been more pleased. Holidays always meant more time could spent alone with his work and much less spent being pestered by students who were as unwilling to learn as he was to teach them.

Alas, tonight was not a night for reaping the benefits of solitude, he thought grimly to himself, turning his gaze towards the fire, which illuminated his harsh features. Lucius Malfoy would soon break his privacy with a visit of necessary unpleasantries- Death Eaters business.

Severus scowled and turned away, unconsciously rubbing the stain on his left arm with the slender fingers of his right. Taking a deep breath and closing his eyes he inwardly rehearsed what he was to say. His cover had gotten exceedingly difficult to maintain since Voldemorts return to power. And now Malfoy (Or whatever other Death Eater Voldemort cared to send) was sent especially by the Dark Lord to inspect Severus’ progress every so often- It was all so very stressful. Snape let out a sigh.

“Tired?” Someone hissed into his right ear.

Before he could catch himself, Snape jumped and quickly whirled around, his wand half out of his pocket.

“A bit jumpy, are we?” Lucius cooed, his gray eyes taking in Severus’ dusty room.

“I didn’t hear you come down.” Severus said in a whisper, sliding his wand back into his pocket.

“You know you mustn’t let your guard down.” Lucius said in a reprimanding tone, dusting a bit of soot from his coat. “Now that Lord Voldemort has returned we are in more danger than ever.” Lucius slowly removed one of his gloves, then the other. “Not that it worries me, I’d die for him… for his cause. Wouldn’t you?” Lucius dropped the gloves on the arm of Severus’ gray settee and looked into his eyes.

Severus nodded sincerely. “Of course, Lucius.” He said. “Why else would you think I’d risk my life, not to mention my sanity, wallowing in his hole of a place?”

Lucius grinned at the answer. “I know I wouldn’t be able to tolerate it. What with Dumbledore polluting the place with those…those mudbloods.” Lucius grimaced- then sighed gently. “But, that problem will be taken care of quite soon, won’t it?” Lucius reached into his green fur coat and withdrew a bottle of dark brandy from who knows where. “Come now, Severus, lets have a drink.”

“Accio goblet.” Snape summoned, as two crystal goblets flew from across the room to the dark-wood table that sat in front of the settee Lucius and Severus were now sharing. Lucius poured the drink generously into each glass and handed one to Severus, who eyed it suspiciously.

“A toast…” Lucius began, raising his glass as Severus did the same. “To Lord Voldemort! May his power never again wane!”

“Here, here.” Severus said using what emotion he could muster and took a sip from the goblet. After he determined his drink wasn’t tainted by some well hid-poison (And, due to his vast experience with potions, he gathered this very quickly.), Severus took a big gulp, savoring the warm liquid as it slid down his throat. Lucius always had the best ports.

Soon, serenaded by nothing but a crackling of the fire, 3 maybe 4 glasses of brandy had been consumed by each of the Death Eaters. Since the bottle was under a clever jinx, the wine never ran out.

Suddenly, taking the cup from his lips, Lucius broke the silence. “Isn’t this great… just like old times, really. How we’d always get together and drink after Lord Voldemorts heists.” Lucius sighed.

“Don’t get sentimental on me.” Severus replied, taking another drink. “You know times have changed…”

“I wish they hadn’t.” Lucius glared at Severus. “Before I had Draco and got married, when we were all Death Eaters together and we didn’t have to worry about the Ministry - or Dumbledore, for that matter- breathing down our necks. We we’re on the top of the world, you know.” Lucius returned his gaze to the fire.

Severus did nothing but nod lazily. Had the drink already begun to affect him? He wondered. He used to be able to drink so much- had it been that long since he last drank? Severus began to do the math in his head, hardly noticing Lucius’ intent stare in his direction.

“You know, from what I hear, the Dark Lord is becoming suspicious of you.” Lucius whispered.

Severus parted the cup from his lips and tried not to choke. “Suspicious of me? Lucius, what are you talking about?”

“You weren’t at the last meeting. Why didn’t you come when you were sent for? I’m sure your mark burned hotter than it ever had before when Lord Voldemort called for you.”

It was true. That night Severus had been in Dumbledores office reviewing plans for the Order. Dumbledore advised him not to attend the meeting. He wouldn’t say why; but since Severus trusted Dumbledores word more than anyones he didn’t go, and he had the bruises to prove it.

Lucius reached out and snatched Severus’ wrist before he had time to retract. With a swift move he tugged Severus’ sleeve up past his elbow and admired the dark mark- dappled with dried blood and surrounded by a deep purple bruise. Severus did little to stop him, his arm hurt too badly to pull away.

Lucius let Severus’ arm slip from his hand, as a look of concern momentarily swept over his face. Severus looked pulled his sleeve back down and looked at Lucius.

“I was helping Dumbledore. It would have been quite suspicious if I were to have left him -and Hogwarts- in the middle of the night.” Severus took another sip from his glass as his dark eyes focused once again on the crackling fire. “So, is that why Voldemort sent you?”

“Oh… he didn’t send me.” Lucius said simply and put down his goblet. Noticing the look of confusion that swept Severus’ face he continued, “I decided to check up on you myself.” He grinned and eased closer to his black-donned companion.

“To check up on me yourself, eh? How is it you are so suddenly concerned with me?” Severus asked, serious-faced, inching slightly away from Lucius’ advances.

Lucius smiled as he inched closer. “We’re old mates. Can’t I be?” Lucius brought his hand up and lightly touched the Potion Masters face.

Severus looked abash, but didn’t withdraw as Lucius kissed him gently on the lips. Drawing back slightly, Lucius looked into Severus’ eyes.

“Lucius….” Severus breathed. He didn’t know what to do as Lucius lurched over him, pushing him back against the couch. “Lucius… what…what are you doing?” He turned and tried to get off the couch, but Lucius held him down and put his wand to his throat.

“Imperio…” Lucius whispered as a shallow light came from the wand and Severus fell back down onto the couch. Lucius grinned and climbed off him. He smacked his wand slowly against his hand in a smooth rhythm as he stood before the paralyzed potions master. Fear gripped Severus as he struggled to resist.

“Shh… Severus. There is no use struggling, pet.” Lucius cooed, dusting away a few strands of raven-colored hair away from Severus’ face.
