Leaving a Mark

Chapter One: A Plan

Severus looked down at the Daily Prophet and sighed disconsolately into his tea once more. Lately the obituary section in the blasted paper always seemed to jump out at him with its lengthy list of never to be forgotten wizards with a mocking suggestiveness: ‘A great father and husband…’, ‘His children will never forget him and mourn him still…’, \'While his spirit moves on, his name continues to linger among us.\' Severus threw the paper down, scrutinizing his fellow teachers and endless students to see if anyone noticed his momentary loss of temper.

Returning to his breakfast, Severus sank back into his gloomy thoughts. Of course, no one noticed anything strange about him; they didn’t want to see him sitting there amongst them, looking no different from the rest of them. As long as he didn’t interfere too much with their daily lives and even when he did, they made the effort to ignore him, to gloss over the fact that a former Death Eater was their fellow teacher. Once the truth came out it was never the same.

After Albus\' passing and Minerva’s death on the battlefield during the so-called ‘Last Battle’, Severus found himself more and more alone. All his old friends from school were either dead or suffering unspeakable horrors in Azkaban. Even his enemies were long gone. He thought once that if only he could be rid of the lot of them, beginning with Potter and the Dark Lord, he would be content in his life, perhaps writing a new Dark - Arts tome for the Durmstrang curriculum, but like all his humble hopes in life this too was dashed in his face when he found out what a pariah he had become once his full history became common knowledge.

In all likelihood he would have been thrown into Azkaban posthaste with the rest of his mates if it weren’t for Albus\' last words, found in his office after the battle, exonerating him from all his crimes and placing his welfare on par with that of the vaunted Harry Potter.

He still remembered his one attempt to publish his notes, the look of contempt and disgust on the face of the proprietor slowly replaced with a total disregard for him as he started talking animatedly with his next customer. He knew when he wasn’t wanted. At least he still had his old position teaching potions. They couldn’t take that away from him without breaking Albus’ will.

Looking down on the paper once more, Severus wondered what they would write when his time came. He was drawing a complete blank except random ridiculous images of a new national festival where small children shall scare their fellows wearing lurid masks with giant noses, dripping greasy hair and a scowl to curdle milk.

No, there will be no flowing obituary and no mourning either. Who could possibly miss him? He never managed to socialize with his fellow order members beyond the superficial common goal they all had. Those former comrades from the order will never do. Most of them were Harry Potter’s groupies and disliked him for his unshakeable hatred for the boy. And as for his fellow teachers, what amity he might have had from them in the past was forever lost now.

Was his life to end like this, the old hated teacher that everyone wanted to be rid of already and forget about? He remembered his father, the cruel, petty old drunkard. No one wanted him around either but at least as long as he, Severus Glaucus Snape, was still alive there was someone to remember the old bastard and remind the revolted population of the greasy beak-nosed fellow every time they looked at him.

Yes, no one wanted to think or see the disgraceful Aurelius Snape when he was still alive but because he had a wife and son to live after his passing he still left tangible marks on the world to live long after he was gone. What would it have meant to have a son of his own, Severus wondered, would it have been enough to know that perhaps that boy could make the name Snape something to be jealous of, something to aspire to? He knew it was already too late in the game to try having that on his own. They wouldn’t let him have anything he truly wished for. For crying out loud, they didn’t even let him teach D.A.D.A. here, choosing instead some good for nothing half squib in his place.

A son; it had a nice ring to it, rolling on his tongue. But than again where would he get such a thing? You had to procure a mother to have that and if they didn’t want to lay eyes on his eminent beautiful Dark tomes surely no witch would want his own disgusting body in her bed. What could he possibly do to change that? They were ahead of him at every step and there seemed nothing he could do about it.

Growling to himself Severus left the table and went to brood some more on his problems in his private rooms. Thinking once more on the son-project Severus drew a parchment and lined his options:

1) Brew a love potion to snag a Muggle female –

*** Advantages: Will not recognize me and run away shrieking. Also, will be defenseless against the simplest spells and potions. Could have my pick from the unending masses to find one pleasing to the eye – could compensate for my own less than Malfoyish looks in final product.

*** Disadvantages: Aurors bound to ask sticky questions. Albus would disapprove of idea. Most importantly – progeny might prove non magical or squibbishly weak. Estimated probability for strong magical: ¼. Too much bother to wait eleven years to find whether attempt successful or wasted effort.

2) Find foreign ignorant witch and woo her to my side –

*** Advantages: Plenty of witches out there. Probability for strongly magical, perhaps even pure blood offspring will be high. Mother will understand needs of said magical offspring.

*** Disadvantages: Will have to live with a foreign non English-speaking witch. Said witch might find past at an importunate time and leave with the offspring or have an abortion. Will have to live with a witch…

Severus put the parchment down. What other options did he have? He didn’t want to live with some witch who no doubt will annoy him to no end. Besides, what witch would have his son anyway, once she knew what he was? She would have to be pretty desperate to get herself into a deal like that.

Racking his brains for more options Severus tried to imagine himself in Arthur Weasley’s place surrounded by all those boys. On the one hand it appeared to be the ideal image of flowing fatherhood with not one but six boys to carry on his name and protect his reputation with even a girl added to the bargain to bring eager suitors willing to lend a hand to the Weasley household in return for her hand. On the other hand there was shrill intrusive Mrs. Weasley to deal with. Who would want to live with such a harpy?

The Weasleys, there was something there if he could only concentrate. What was he thinking, surely not of asking Ginny Weasley to help him out as a fellow order member? No, that was ridiculous. What was it? Severus felt he had it on the tip of his tongue. Money! That was it. He had to find some poor witch, someone as poor as the Weasleys but not half as proud and offer to pay her for giving him a son. That was it. Quickly he scribbled the notion down:

3) Find a witch willing to be impregnated for money –

*** Advantages: Have plenty of savings from Death Eaters’ raids and unspent teaching salary. Could be rid of witch once I have child in hand. Will only have to sign a mutual agreement with witch giving her proper monetary reward for her time and effort. No need to reform into some Lockhart vision or become emotionally attached. No need to hide identity or past.

*** Disadvantages: What disadvantages? This is perfect!

*** Plan of action: Publish anonymous ad in papers and than set a rendezvous giving my name once witch becomes interested. Should specify high enough a reward to get witch beyond immediate misgivings and revulsion.

Severus started smiling. He could do this. He could have a son. A son. Someone to carry on his name and remember him. This time he would have what he wanted and not live off the leavenings of the likes of Malfoy, the Dark Lord or even Albus Dumbledore. This time he would get his own.

Taking a new parchment he thought a moment and than scribbled down his offering:

“Wizard seeking a witch willing to bear him a son in return for ample monetary rewards. No long-term attachment required. Witch preferably of ample magical powers and below age seventy-five. Please contact me through the name Succulent Vulcan.”

That will do, Severus thought, straight and to the point. Charming his quill to copy it a few times he added requests to the various magical papers to print it with the appropriate sums added and gathering his things went up to the owlery to send the letters and inform the owls of his new false name. He liked the ring of it: Succulent to attract them and also for his publicly unknown middle name and Vulcan for his character and profession.

Going back to his rooms Severus wondered what kind of women he could hope to meet this way. Well, there was no sense in worrying too much; he was bound to hear from them soon enough and than he would see.
