Chapter 1 - Memories
9th January
5th year class

…He couldn’t believe that they still had to sit in alphabetical order, he wasn’t complaining about the company, I mean who would, he could think of a number of boys who would love to be in his position now. But it was ammunition with which he could arm himself, and his sadistic side liked to watch the looks on their faces when she sat next to him every lesson.

He knew that plenty of guys wanted her, and yet she had gone with no one as far as he knew, even Black and Potter wanted a bite of her. Everybody’s eyes flicked to her as she walked in, she hated that and was thankful that they sat right at the back.
“Why the face as long as a yard of gravy?” she asked Potter, a gryffindor she liked to annoy a lot. Inside Severus sniggered, he loved her personality and her sense of humour, to him the good looks were merely a lucky bonus.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Potter asked as he turned to face her.
“It means that she still doesn’t like you doesn’t it. Potter can’t get a girlfriend, not even from the mudbloods!” she laughed, as she did most others did too, it was great being in a class dominated by Slytherins.

“Oh Berni, go out with me, I need to. Please! Oh Berni.”, he asked.
“Oh Berni, I need to, PLEASE.” She imitated him, causing more laughs. “What do you need? *pause* I don’t think you need to answer that, I think I can just about guess. Do you really think that if a stupid gryffindor mudblood doesn’t go for you that I would?”
“SHUT UP!” he shouted.
“Ooo…must have hit a nerve there.”, she said as the teacher walked in.
“I think I’ve made a break through, would you like to come down and I’ll show you in more detail.” Severus asked after the lesson got started.
“Sure.” She replied.
They talked very very quietly of what they were planning to concoct next down in those dungeons. Not only was he sat next to a very good looking girl, but he was sat next to the only person in the school that shared his interest in potions.

A while later she put her hand to scratch her knee as they set to work on a tough problem they had been set. She scratched away at her knee, as she pulled her hand away from her knee, she felt his own hand come over hers. Simultaneously they turned to each other, looking into each others eyes. They looked back at the problem, again thanking Merlin they sat at the back of class, behind everybody else as they continued to hold hands under the desk.
She lent her writing hand to the problem as his was currently busy holding her left hand under the table. They inched their chairs closer to each other, putting their heads together they quickly solved the problem, but maintained the pretence of hard-at-work as the teacher passed close to them.

Finally when the teacher had gone Severus bent his head to her ear, “Would you come out with me tonight under the stars? Being prefects we’ve got reason to be there.”
“Merlin’s beard, did I just hear Snivellus ask Berni out?” Potter had obviously been listening in on them. “I shall have to watch out for you two tonight!”
She felt Severus’s hand leave and it appear on the table, a stab of anger towards Potter flow through her like never before.
“I see you’ve done a lot of work, Potter, too difficult for your pea-sized brain to cope with?” she started, “You’re not a prefect Potter, so if we see you tonight you’ll be out of this school quicker than you can say ‘Quidditch’”

At the end of the two and a half long lesson she followed him down to the familiar dungeon. He closed the door behind them and suddenly shouted, “I hate him! I hate him!” Spit had been flying from his mouth with every word and his body had gone rigid with the absolute anger flowing through it. She knew exactly who he was talking about.
“He’s only jealous.” She tried to comfort him.
“Jealous? What have I got that he hasn’t?”
“Plenty, you shouldn’t put yourself down so much. He’s only a stupid gryffindor.” She said taking his form into her arms. “I’ll tell you something that one of my other friends told me, ‘if anybody gets on your nerves or you’re scared of them, just remember that they all go to the toilet.” She whispered into his ear.

He laughed, finally letting her see a very rare smile. “Well, have a look at this then.” He said pulling the lid off a cauldron standing close by.
“Oh WOW! Isn’t that fantastic!” She exclaimed jumping up and down.
“This is going to make us famous.” He said putting his arms back around her shoulders.

“Yes” she said suddenly.
“Yes?” he questioned.
“To the question you asked earlier, before we were rudely interrupted. But, I’d like to take it slowly, is that ok?” she explained.
“Are you saying yes to me, Berni?” he started, wondering what god was answering his prayers.
“That’s what I said isn’t it?” she replied, watching his smile broaden.
“I understand, in your own time and only if you feel ready. We’ll take it slowly.”

They embraced and it was obvious to her for the first time that she had made the right decision. She put her head on his chest taking in the smell of his clothes, and of him.
The bell went, History of Magic, they walked as they usually did, side by side.

That night, they met up inside a now thankfully empty common room, took hold of each others hand and walked, just walked. Outside they went, she loved looking at the pitch black sky, you could see innumerable numbers of stars here because of no light pollution.

“Beautiful aren’t they.” He remarked looking himself up at the universe, before sitting down on the bit of grass under a tree which hadn’t got thick slush on it (it had been snowing recently).
“Yes.” She replied sitting next to him, they spent quite a long time just sat in silence, their arms around each other, looking up at those stars together.

“Happy Birthday, I’ve got something for you.”
“What…how did…Ooo…” he stuttered as she pulled something out of her pocket and handed a small package to him…
