Chapter 1: Big news!
“All 7th year Muggle Studies students will please report to the Great hall immediately for an important announcement.”
Harry, who was sitting in the Gryffindor common room digesting his breakfast, glanced around casually at his group of friends, trying to remember which ones were in the Muggle Studies class with him. Hermione was because, being muggle-born, this was another class she was sure to pass in. Ron had taken it because he wanted a job in the Ministry of Magic like his father, and needed to be able to interact with the muggles if necessary. Malfoy had also signed up for the class, because (unbeknown to the trio) his father wanted him to be able to do the same and blend in seamlessly wherever the Dark Lord needed them to go.
Hermione had gotten up and was tugging on Harry’s arm.
“Come on, Harry, we need to be there, something’s happening!!”
Once they were in the Great hall, Professor McGonagall called them all to the front where she was standing.
“The headmaster has planned a trip for this class to enable you to experience the muggle world for yourselves. There will be things you can see and do that you could not do within the school. The trip will last 4 weeks, and your field work during the day will be accompanied by studying in the evenings to keep up with the set work. You will be leaving this evening and taking the train from Hogsmeade to London to spend the night before taking a morning train to Colchester town where you will be for most of the trip. Please go away now and pack your things, your first lessons will be informed of your absence.”
Harry was about to turn to Hermione and tell her how excited he was, but she grabbed his arm and started jumping up and down and squealing before he could even get a single word out.
“Harry, Harry, isn’t this great? There will be so much we can learn!”
“Uh, Hermione,” Ron said, “You’ve lived in the muggle world since you were born, there won’t be anything you don’t already know!”
“Oh for goodness sake, Ron, just because I have seen muggle life doesn’t mean I have seen it all! There will be so much to do and see and I bet the exam will ask us some location-specific questions now! I hope there will be enough time to take notes on everything…maybe I can go again with my parents….”
Harry and Ron rolled their eyes at each other. They knew Hermione was all about the studying and the exams, and just let her get on with it.
“Come on then, Herm, we have to go and pack our stuff! Wouldn’t want to leave any books or quills behind, would you?” Ron said enthusiastically and sneakily sarcastically. “Imagine if you ran out of parchment and couldn’t take any more notes?”
“Oh gosh, yes! I have to go and get everything ready!” Hermione gasped and dashed out of the Great hall.
“Ron, you rotter,” Harry laughed. “You knew that would get rid of her.”
“And it did.” Ron grinned, sitting at the table and setting out a quidditch pitch with the condiments. “Mission accomplished. Now we can go and lark about for a while, Professor Binns won’t even notice we’re not there, even with the notice that we’ll be late.”
“If you fail History of Magic you might not be allowed to work in the Ministry, Ron,” said a quiet voice from behind them. “That would be a tragedy wouldn’t it,” she smirked.
“Bloody hell Hermione, you just left! How did you pack all your things so quickly?”
“Language, Ronald, and if you bothered to do some learning of your own, you would have found the same packing spell that I did. Lucky for you, I had time to do it on your things too. You will have enough time after lunch to check that I didn’t leave anything out, but for now we have to get to class. Come on!”
“Yes, mother,” Harry and Ron chanted together, grinning at each other.
Hermione just rolled her eyes at them and muttered something very not-under-her-breath about unpacking cases as quickly as they were packed, and the boys hurried to follow her to class.
