Chapter 1: Cerin

Hermione walked along the deserted hall of Hogwarts. Covered in Harry’s invisibility cloak, she was confident that no one would spot her.

With the Marauder’s Map in her hands, she set off to a hidden tapestry that not even the map showed.

Quietly, so as not to disturb the portraits around her, she walked to a black painted tapestry. Hermione raised her wand:

“Ostendo Ostium!” She whispered and tapped her want on the cloth 3 times. The tapestry shifted and dissolved away into nothingness.

Smiling to herself, she crawled into the hole that appeared and into the darkness. After she was in she turned to the entrance and muttered:

“Recipero!” And the tapestry was there once again. Making sure that no one would find her way, she cast Lumos to light her way around.

In front of her was a chair. Well, she wasn’t stupid so she sat down.

“Ahh…You have come. I would have thought you forgot about me Master.” A voice called out.

“Don’t be ridiculous! I wouldn’t forget you, besides your knowledge is extremely valuable to us at the moment.” She stated at the unknown speaker.

There was silence.

“So you only keep me active because I know? What will you do after the war is over? Will you throw me away because you see fit?” It asked.

“Heh. I’m not merciless. I am only a human, I have a heart.” Hermione said once again.

“Now, come out from there Cerin, so I can see you. It’s a bit disturbing to talk to nothing.”

“But I am with you. It is just that you cannot see me.” It stated.

Hermione sighed. “Cerin, fine…Be that way. Tell me what you have discovered this evening.” She leaned back in her chair and waited.

“The Death Eaters are moving.” At once, Hermione sat straight.

“Where? Tell me now Cerin!” She shouted.

“Quiet Master. The stones in the walls have ears and eyes. Unless you want to be found here, I would keep silent.”

//She has a point. // Hermione thought.

“I always do master.”

“Reading my mind again Cerin?” She asked.

“Your thoughts are incredibly amusing.”

“But not for your entertainment Cerin.”

“Of course. Shall I continue?” Cerin did not wait for an answer. “Voldemort has proclaimed that new death eaters will be joining. They go by: Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe and Blaise Zabini.”
“I have got to tell the headmaster at once!” Hermione stood up, but an unknown force held her back.

“I have not finished master.” Cerin’s voice floated over to her. “There is something that is quite disquieting…Voldemort had only summoned three death eaters…. It seems they have found a traitor amongst them.”

“Snape…” Hermione breathed.

“Yes…he…but theve ove only discovered that there is a traitor. They have not discovered who.” Cerin said her voice was right next to Hermione’s.

“Which death eaters were summoned?” Hermione asked.

“Both Senior Malfoys and Lestrange.” Cerin answered her master.

Hermione nodded and sat down again. “So, Snape does not know that they have discovered him?”

“No.”

“I see. How will I know that the headmaster will trust my information?” Hermione looked around her and thought: //Appear before me//

Responding to her orders, Cerin appeared before Hermione. Her white hair and blank face seemed to glow in the light of the Lumos spell Hermione cast a while ago.

Hermione looked into Cerin’s face, which was not face at all, only a white surface with the marking of where the eyes would have been.

“Take this.” Cerin held out a Pensieve. The memories inside where swirling around in silver strings.

“A Pensieve?” Hermione looked at Cerin.
“Yes, but the memories look like they were yours.” Cerin said. She drifted close to her master.

“Will you throw me away after the war?” She asked.

“First, show me your face.” Hermione ordered. Cerin’s face morphed, black lips, golden eyes and a tiny nose appeared where there was nothing at first.

“No, I will not dispose of you. You are too valuable.” Hermione reassured her.

“So, not only my information is valuable?” Cerin asked again.

“No, you are just as priceless.” Hermione smiled and took Cerin’s hand in hers. Cerin’s eyes widened considerably. But she soon smiled at Hermione and said:

“You are the only master I have respected.” Cerin stated.

Hermione beamed at the news and thought //What time is it Cerin? //

“Half p3 in3 in the morning. You best be back to bed now. Would you like me to transport you?”

“No thank you. I will go myself. Would you like to come with me Cerin?” Hermione asked her servant and her confidant.

“I prefer the darkness, thank you though.” Cerin smiled and realized that Hermione still had her hand in hers.

Hermione let go and muttered “Nox. Good night Cerin.”

“Good Morning to you too master.” Cerin laughed lightly.

Hermione said the words to dissolve the tapestry and opened the map in her hand. No one was around her. Good.

She stepped out and repaired the tapestry and headed for her room. With one last look behind her she said. “Sweet dreams Cerin.”

She heard the small voice in her head, filling her with warmth “You too master… you too.”

With the invisibility cloak around her she headed to bed, in the morning she would hand over the Pensieve to the headmaster.
