A Crown of Thorns
**DISCLAIMER** All characters etc. belong to J.K. Rowling and I am making no money from this. Don’t sue because I’m sure that I don’t have anything that you’d want anyway. The basic plot for the story was a challenge presented by ArienAstera.
This story is an answer to the Princess Challenge presented on AFF.net by ArienAstera. It is my first attempt at a challenge fic and I absolutely loved the story line. I only hope that my writing does it justice. I am doing this without a beta so please forgive any grammatical errors or spelling, but please read and review, constructive criticism is greatly appreciated!
Prologue – Without a Trace
‘Where are they, can’t those two imbeciles be on time for anything?’ Hermione Granger thought in annoyance. She had been sitting in a back booth at the Three Broomsticks waiting for almost an hour for her two best friends, Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. They had agreed, reluctantly, to meet her this evening to make studying arrangements for the upcoming O.W.L. exams but knowing the two of them they were probably lost in a game of chess or out on the Quidditch pitch.
Hermione drained the last of her Butterbeer, pulled on her cloak and made her way out the pub and started up the long road leading back to Hogwarts. Usually this road was teeming with students, however since this was a school night, the road was dark and deserted.
“Lumos.” The tip of Hermione’s wand lit providing some light aside from the eerie shadows cast from the moon. She shivered against the cool night air and pulled her cloak a little tighter around her, quickening her pace only to be stopped by the familiar ‘POP’ sound of someone apparating.
“Well, well, good evening Miss Granger. Now, isn’t this a pleasant surprise to find you here, all alone.” The voice behind her made Hermione jump, bracing herself she turned on her heel to find herself face to face with Lucius Malfoy.
He smirked at her, “Expelliarmus.” And before Hermione had a chance to react her wand flew from her hand and he caught it easily in mid-air, placing it in an inside pocket of his cloak.
Although she was a powerful witch Hermione knew that unarmed she was no match for Malfoy. She was only just beginning to practice wandless magic and knew only a few basic spells. Sensing the danger she was in, her stomach began to churn and the little hairs on the back of her neck prickled.
“Good evening Mr. Malfoy.” She attempted to keep her voice steady but he could almost smell her fear and it was intoxicating.
He shook his head and clucked at her disapprovingly, “Come now Miss Granger, surely your parents have taught you better than this. Don’t you know that it’s not safe for a young lady such as yourself to be wandering about on dark roads, unescorted?” He said the word ‘lady’ with such disdain that Hermione’s fear quickly turned to anger.
She could feel her cheeks growing hot. She knew all too well of his dislike for her but even he wouldn’t dare hurt her, not here, so close to the school.
“I am not ‘wandering about’ Mr. Malfoy, I am on my way back to school, where my friends are expecting me. Now, unless there is something I could help you with I would appreciate it if you would return my wand and let me be on my way. Accio wand.” Her wand struggled in vain to free itself from the inside pocket it was trapped in as he looked down at the front of his robes, amused.
He chuckled, “Very impressive Miss Granger, a mudblood attempting to master wandless magic. You are ambitious indeed, a trait that will endear you even further to our Dark Lord.” He watched her eyes grow wide in terror as he strode over to her and grabbed her roughly by the arms.
She struggled against hrip, rip, “LET GO OF ME YOU BASTARD!”
As Hermione struggled violently to free herself from his grip Malfoy put the tip of his wand against her chest and wrapped his other arm tightly around her waist to prevent her from falling before he whispered in her ear, “Petrificus Totalus.” At once her entire body became rigid and with a ‘POP’ they both disappeared into the darkness.
